Hi,

I've been working on ridding my computer of a bunch of Trojans, Spyware and Downloaders that came in over the weekend while surfing. Some include Look2Me, Adware.PurityScan, Think-Adz Search Assistant, UCMore, ZenoSearch, SurfSideKick, Monnet, Mirar, and WebHancer. Windows Defender suddenly blew up with alerts about most of those when it happened. The system is running normally now, and scans with Spybot S&D, ewido, Norton, SuperAntiSpyware and Windows Defender are clean. An online scan with Panda Active scan comes back with a number of items, mostly cookies, and the SDFix tool I downloaded in case I needed it while working offline. While this is good news, the system still seems to be running slower than usual and Windows Update hangs when searching the system for updates (never stops searching). I feel like I missed something, and I'm more worried about something I can't see, than the things I can (popups, etc)...

Anyway, below is my HJT log, and report from PandaScan is in the next post.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide!

Chris

Update: A full scan with Norton last night revealed 3 Adware.Popuppers threats:

Cast.dll
CastAux.dll
septpop06apsept.exe

These files are all compressed within C:\windows\popupwithcast.exe. There is something going on here that is adding these files to the windows directory as they were not there the day before. I haven't had Norton fix them yet, because I don't want to just fix the surface of the problem.

Please Help! Thanks,

Chris

Hello

Update: A full scan with Norton last night revealed 3 Adware.Popuppers threats:
Cast.dll
CastAux.dll
septpop06apsept.exe

These files are all compressed within C:\windows\popupwithcast.ex

Let norton clean or delete them, then keep an eye out to see if they re-appear ?
If there a folder C:\program files\popupwithcast ?

Post a combofix log
1. Download this file - combofix.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/combofix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
If the log is large You might need to post half in one reply half in another.

Thanks for the help so far!

Norton failed to delete popupwithcast.exe, so I deleted it manually without a problem. I ran combofix, and here are the results:

chris - 06-09-18 10:13:30.79 Service Pack 2
ComboFix 06.09.14 - Running from: C:\Documents and Settings\chris\Desktop

Go here and submit each of the file in this section
""Files Created from 2006-08-18 to 2006-09-18"
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html

Let me know if any are found to be bad

That link just shows a bunch of garbage characters. Is there another link you can point me to that can scan the files?

Thanks!

Sorry, the links works now. Must have been down for a short period, update coming soon on scans.

I scanned all the files with one of the scanners you linked to, and they all came back clean, except nsqA8.dll came back with a maybe on jotti:

File: nsqA8.dll
Status: MIGHT BE INFECTED/MALWARE (Sandbox emulation took a long time and/or runtime packers were found, this is suspicious. Normally programs aren't packed and don't force the sandbox into lengthy emulation. Do realize no scanner issued any warning, the file can very well be harmless. Caution is advised, however.) (Note: this file has been scanned before. Therefore, this file's scan results will not be stored in the database)
MD5 25b77bac3078cdd619b6a1e6d1bf9dd4
Packers detected: PE_PATCH.UPX, UPX

Since it is a maybe what you can do is rename it and leave in place.
so rename nsqA8.dll to nsqA8.dll.OLD , then if there are no problems after a couple weeks you can delete it.

Think Prevention: Put in place a good hosts file
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
How To Download and Extract the HOSTS file:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts2.htm
Repeat that proccess about once or twice a month

To help avoid reinfection see "So how did I get infected in the first place?"

Ok, renamed the file and restared, and been doing some browsing. The popupwithcast hasn't returned and the system seems to be running normally. I scanned the windows dir with Norton and it came back clean. I'll keep an eye on things and run some full system scans tonight to see what happens.

Out of curiosity, did the combofix do anything besides displaying some useful information in the log?

At this point, are you saying the system appears to be clean?

Thanks for the help!

Chris
