either zonealarm or old spybot updates was the problem
spybot is a little slow

Correct, I was interested in how you had samples for testing, are you a researcher? :)
It is usually clear to users when their computer is held to ransome. As ransomeware is complex and ever evolving I refer users with infected machines to our malware removal forum.
