I followed the instructions in the before you post directions, I was not able to remove, "surfsidekick" and "mediamotor" after numerous attempts to fix with Spybot in Safemode. I was unable to un Panda scan on-line. I'm getting alot of pop ups, here is my hyjack this log.

Please help! Thank you in advance.

Hi Monica and welcome to the forum. My first advice would be to stay offline as much as possible until we get you cleaned up, this junk will attract more.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/combofix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
If the log is large You might need to post half in one reply half in another.

Thanks

Monica

I understand that can happen, try the fix again, it is so much better if the tool will do it for us. Otherwise we must do it manually and that is much harder for you. Please post complete HJT logs for me also. You cut this one off early.

Thanks

Edit: make sure you leave the computer alone while that fix is running.

Nope, just need them once, let's see how it looks. A lot of junk still to remove, how did you get this computer this infected?

I am seeing Trend Micro and Symantec, you don't have two antivirus programs running at once do you? See this information:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2000031316555206
"Microsoft recommends that you have only one anti-virus program installed on your computer."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/12/03/AR2005120300087.html
If you do, you need to uninstall one of those.

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/...ch/search.html

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

4) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

(these may be gone, just do not miss them)

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\dwdsregt.exe <<< delete that file
C:\windows\system32\oodsregm.exe <<< delete that file

5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post a new HJT log, let me know how the computer is running now.

Thanks

Monica

So far no ads have popped up. So hopefully everything is working fine. because of you I'm up and running again. Thanks soooo very much. I didn't think I had any virus protections, because my system has been running so poorly and it's about 4 yrs old, I just figured I need a new computer. So I let my on-line subscription expire, than one day last week I got a pop up saying, a virus was detected and to hit "scan" for it to be fixed, dummy me, I hit scan and that's when all the problems started. I deleted Trend Micro off. At one time a friend came over and installed a firewall, I'm didn't know installed a virus protections too, how do I check to see if I have an active virus protections or not. Once again, I wish I could give you a big hug or send you some flowers or something. Monica

Here's a HJT log I just did. does everything look fine? M

Hi Monica and thanks for that feedback. If you need links to any free programs, let me know, in the meantime I want you to open the Control Panel and then the Security Center. You should have only one firewall running, just like antivirus programs. I want you to make sure all three items are green/on. That will mean you have an active AV, Firewall is on (should be off only if you are running a third party firewall like Zone Alarm), and your Updates are set to auto.

You are right, tricking folks to click on stuff to infect them is an old trick. It is also fraud, but it seems it is taking our law makers a long time to catch up with these criminals.

Your log is looking good, just a little more stuff I mised before, old McAfee. Do this:

Disable the Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to McAfee SecurityCenter Update Manager and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled. (be careful in there)

Start > Control Panel > Add Remove programs. If McAfee is there, uninstall it first.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MCUpdateExe] C:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\agent\mcupdate.exe
O9 - Extra button: WeatherBug - {AF6CABAB-61F9-4f12-A198-B7D41EF1CB52} - C:\Program Files\AWS\WeatherBug\Weather.exe (file missing) (HKCU)
O23 - Service: McAfee SecurityCenter Update Manager (mcupdmgr.exe) - Networks Associates Technology, Inc - C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\Agent\mcupdmgr.exe

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Navigate to C:\PROGRAMS~1\McAfee.com\ <<< delete that folder.

That should take care of all of those issues. Now let's clean the System Restore files like this:
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

I appreciate your kind thoughts and your thanks, which is what I work for, tashi:) will close the topic in a few days, if any questions come up, post to let me know. Look in the links I just posted, that is information from some of the most respected folks in malware removal and security.

Thanks...pskelley
