Hey guys,

I just want to start off by saying that it's great to be on this forum with you guys and i am looking forward to speaking with everyone. Also if i have posted in the wrong place or if it would do better somewhere else just let me know and i will get it moved to a more appropriate place.

Rite guys i am no computer wiz and in general pretty useless with keeping them clean and in order so please bare with me and my lack of terminology. I have just lost a laptop with years and years of my life due to viruses, spyware, malware etc, This can't happen again. I am now going through proceedings to back up all of my data which i should have done in the first place. Now all i need is all the spyware, malware and Trojan horse protectors etc literally everything that you can think of that will protect my laptop. If possible i could do with the name of the software and what is does so i can start buying/downloading the software needed.

Thanks guys

Could you clarify please, is this the same laptop or a new one?

What is the operating system and were any security programs previously installed? :)

Best regards.

Hello AntiGeorge,

Windows Defender (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-defender) is built-in to Windows 10, are you using and updating the program?

As you posted in the Spybot forums I will also refer you to our products page (https://www.safer-networking.org/private/). https://forums.spybot.info/images/smilies/Give%20flowers.gif

Rule of thumb is one anti virus program resident to avoid conflicts, loss of program efficiency and system lock up due to both software products attempting to access the same files at the same time.

Usually one can have more than one anti-spyware, anti-malware type programs installed without issue, although one may decide to choose one resident real time protection.

Did you have any of those in mind as you have been looking around?

Best regards.

So what your saying is, If i just use the Windows Defender with out any other anti-virus software on the computer this should be enough to protect me from everything? The ones i have seen when looking around are Norton, Malware bites and AVG, they seem to be the top ranking.

I am not saying that  there are variables and a lot depends on your own computing. :kboard:

The reason I asked if you were using and updating Defender was because it includes an anti-virus. While you are deciding on the AV you want to use, you have that protection running in the interim.

These are the support forums for our own software (https://www.safer-networking.org/private/) so I am not going to make product recommendations. :)

However,

Usually one can have more than one anti-spyware, anti-malware type programs installed without issue, although one may decide to choose one resident real time protection.

That should give you the basis to look around and choose authentic well known programs you can probably trial before making a decision.

I have had a look at the link you provided and the home version would do the trick. i am going to have a look for the trial version so i can check it out first and see how it goes. Sorry i just want to make sure when i have downloaded another anti-virus, spyware program should i disable the Windows Defender or leave it running?

Thanks

Hello AntiGeorge,

By design Windows Defender will not open to run in the presence of another antivirus on the machine.

"Windows will disable this program if it detects another antivirus program on your PC in order to prevent conflict between the multiple antivirus programs installed."
https://www.safer-networking.org/faq/spybot-defender-windows-10/

Hope that helps. :)

This makes sense. Windows does a good job of trying to make sure there software runs as smoothly as possible, Well they try. I am going to download the free version on the link that was provided before and run it for a couple of weeks with minimum usage of the laptop and see what it pulls up then so on for a couple other anit-virus programs to see which one works best. I will be back shortly guys! thanks for the help

To clarify, the free version does not contain an anti-virus. See: https://www.safer-networking.org/

(https://www.safer-networking.org/)"User of Windows 10 may have noticed that Windows Defender will stop running in Windows 10 when Spybot is installed.

Windows will disable this program if it detects another antivirus program on your PC in order to prevent conflict between the multiple antivirus programs installed.
The Free Edition of Spybot also falls into this category, because it contains antivirus components from the paid editions"

I see you can get the antispyware and anit-virus protection for $9.99 a year which is a pretty good price if it does the job. I have the Free trial of Norton at the minute and that came up with 6 problems that it fixed, apparently. I will see how this is on day to day use and be back. It would be great to trial out a version of the SPYBOT software but it is fair priced... Thanks guys back again soon

Ok. Talk about speaking to soon. Norton has just flashed up with a message saying "Critical bug in Adobe Flash Player" and that it is unable to remove it. Is this just a way for them to get me to buy the product or have i genuinely got a bug? I haven't really used the laptop, unless Facebook is full on bugs, viruses etc. And i have just read this
