I've recently reconnected to the internet after a while away so I'm sure I've missed quite a few updates.

My problem is when I try to update through the integrated update function I get the message: "Error retrieving update info file! HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found"

Any help on how I can get around this problem would be greatly appreciated.

The update process starts by downloading the spybotsd.ini file from one of these two sites:
http://security.kolla.de/updates/spybotsd.ini (for Spybot-S&D 1.3).
http://www.safer-networking.org/updates/spybotsd.ini (for Spybot-S&D 1.4).
Depending on which version of Spybot you are running (going into Spybot > Help > About will tell you), go into Windows Internet Explorer and try downloading the corresponding file. Are you able to download the file directly?
If you can download the file directly, try the Spybot integrated update again. If it still not working:
Do you have a firewall and if so have you authorized SpybotSD.exe to access the internet?
If you can not download the file directly then there is something preventing access to that site/file (your HOSTS file, ISP, DNS, etc.).

Thanks for the reply.

I was able to download the "Detection updates" and the "Advanced library check update" however there was an error when I tried to download the "tools update".

As for the rest well I'm not really sure to be honest. I'm connected to the internet through my university's VPN so I'm not sure how to change those sort of things. Yes I'm a bit hopeless with all these things!

If the error you received was "Bad Checksum" try changing the download server to another one as discribed here:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=345&postcount=2
Note: The download server can be changed after the "Search for Updates" and before clicking "Download Updates". So if you find a server that works well, you can start by using that server in the future. Also note that if you want (not necessarily recommended) you can select a server and then right click on the button and "Set this server as the preferred download location". If you do that Spybot will select that sever rather than a random server for future updates.

Additional information:
When updating, why do I get an error message that the "update is forbidden" / "bad checksum!!!"?

I'm still receiving the same error as the one in my first post. However the error I get when I try to download the tools update read: "Error opening file for writing:" and then gives the destination of where i'm trying to install the update.

I have tried to select a new server but it doesn't give me any options. It just says in the box "No server selected"

Are you indicating that you are downloading the updates manually rather than through Spybot's integrated update update facility and are having problems executing spybotsd_tools.exe program after downloading the following item?
Tools update 2006-03-31 - product description
md5: 6A3F1779DDC2EBAADB65C086687DF4B3

Only needed if you do not use the integrated update.
If so, exit both Spybot and TeaTimer if you have them running before attempting to execute the spybotsd_tools.exe program.

If you get an error downloading the spybotsd.ini file during Spybot's integrated update, no list of servers is presented because that file contains the list of available servers.
