Hey,

Yesterday I got a whole lot of nasty stuff happening on my computer. From what I can tell at least some of it was related to something symantec refers to as SpywareQuake (http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2006-032914-3453-99). I also had a toolbox888 at one stage. And a whole lot of other stuff.

I followed the instruction from Symantec above and then ran Symantec AV, Lavasoft Ad-aware, AVG Free and Ewido Anti-spyware and Spybot S&D and almost everything has been cleaned up. Well at least most of the symptoms are gone (and there were lots of them). However I am left with two problems that haven't been fixed yet.

1. When I start IE it takes me to wxx.uptodateprotection.com which is a fake antivirus site which throws up a popup telling me about some virus and asking me to press "ok". In IE settings my homepage is still set to what it used to be.

2. While using IE (and maybe at other times too) I occassionally see a popup window flash on the screen and disappear. It doesn't even stay long enough to render properly.

Does anyone know what this is and what AV program might be able to clean it up?

Just as an update:

I found 2 add-ons in IE that I can't account for.

The first is named {A43385F0-7113-496D-96D7-B9B550E3FCCA} and is listed as a "Browser Helper Object" with the file ixt2.dll (in the sysetm32 dir). Disabling this add-on fixes the problem with wxx.uptodateprotection.com.

The other is named opnlm.dll and is another "Browser Helper Object". Not sure what this does - is it supposed to be there?

I think Prex1 claims to clean both of these problems. I'll give it a go before I start deleing things :)

Welcome to the forum, I am hesitant to start working on this because you seem to have your own ideas about what you want to do. I can not see the Symantec link but most other programs you ran are good ones, and Prevx is also a good program. If you do not need help, fine, just post to let me know and I will close the topic. If you do want help, then you need to stop, and follow the directions I am posting. You get to make the call.

First it appears you are running two Antivirus programs at the same time: Norton AntiVirus Server and Grisoft\AVGFRE~1. Please see this information:

Remove one, update and scan the system with the one you keep removing anything it locates. If there is something that can't be removed I need the exact name and location (pathway) of that item/items.

Follow the directions in this link: http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=4015 When you finish the instructions, post the three logs in this same topic using the "Post Reply" button.

Spybot-S&D: Be sure to follow the directions to save the scan report but do not post it here unless requested by a helper.

Copy/paste your information to this same topic using "Post Reply", do not code or quote. I need all logs posted in this same manner, I do not open attachments from infected machines.

Before reading this today I ran prevx and it cleaned the files I had found. All the symptoms I know of have been treated. However your reassurance and advice is still greatly appreciated. I followed your recommended steps just to be sure. If nothing stands out in the logs I would be happy to close this request, with my thanks.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
