Hi

My name is ray and I have recently identified problems on my PC with virus and worms that bypassed Norton I S.

I have some trojans on my pc and a worm.

I was advised to try Spybot but when I try to use spybot for the first time I am prompted to get updates....

However, although I can connect to the internet an error messager comes up from Spybot to say

Error retrieving update file...

Socket error #10061

Connection refused.

Could this be the virus or worm affecting my attempt to connect please and stop me using Spybot?

Thanks

Ray

Socket Errors are documented here:
Windows Sockets Error Codes (http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/winsock/winsock/windows_sockets_error_codes_2.asp)
Socket Error # 10061 indicates:
Connection refused.
No connection could be made because the target computer actively refused it. This usually results from trying to connect to a service that is inactive on the foreign host???that is, one with no server application running.
The primary causes of Socket Errors during the Spybot update are firewalls and proxy servers.

Do you have a firewall? If you have a firewall:
You must authorize SpybotSD.exe to access the internet through your firewall. If you have a firewall and are not sure if that is the cause of the problem, you could (for a short period) disable the firewall and see if the updates work properly.
Are you sitting behind a proxy server? If you are sitting behind a proxy server:
Go into Spybot > Mode > Advanced mode > Settings > Settings. About 2/3 of the way down the option tree there is a category "Web update'. Check the last item in the list "Use proxy to connect to update server". A pop-up will come up were you can enter the information required.

If you are sitting behind a proxy server and need to know what the settings should be, there are hints in the following article on how to find them:

If you are unable to get the updates using the integrated update facility, you can manually download and execute an update file from safer-networking.org:
Downloads – Home of Spybot-S&D!
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
Detection updates 2006-09-15 - product description
md5: 98AE72801528B1881AB4619ED74B0215

This updates the detection rules. Only needed if you do not want to use the update function integrated into Spybot-S&D.

The direct link is:
http://www.spybotupdates.com/updates/files/spybotsd_includes.exe
This manual update file is updated around the same time that the updates are made available via the integrated update facility. The description changes on the download page but the download url remains constant.

There are also two other updates that you should download and execute if you can download via the intergrated update facility:
Tools update 2006-03-31 - product description
md5: 6A3F1779DDC2EBAADB65C086687DF4B3
Only needed if you do not use the integrated update.
Advanced check library update 2006-03-30 - product description
md5: 73047D64714ECB9BD4A023E3A6EF4354
This is an update for a detection library. Only needed if you do not want to use the update function integrated into Spybot-S&D.
