Wifes Laptop infected with Themonitor, Project1, and lord knows what else

Long story short: My wife opened a file sent by one of her friends "Check out this cool picture" through MSN messenger. The computer now runs slower than it did before, IE windows pop up all the time and project1 shows up in the task manager whenever the computer is started. I also get an error message that shows up when I start the laptop.
"RUNDLL could not load w01ba1da.dll"

I think I have gotten rid of the viruses it installed by running NAV in Safe mode, but there is still malware that shows up no matter how many times I run SpyBot.

Welcome to the forum, your wife has downloaded a bunch of junk, and it will take a little time to remove it. I must suggest that you stay offline as much as possible except when troubleshooting the issue, the junk will attract more. I also need to say that you are running MSConfig in Selective Startup Mode. I need to see all logs with everything enabled in MSConfig, in Normal Mode with no formating in Notepad unless I request otherwise. If this works for you, we will proceed like this:

Please download Look2Me-Destroyer.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=7) to your desktop.
Close all windows before continuing.
Double-click Look2Me-Destroyer.exe to run it.
Put a check next to Run this program as a task.
You will receive a message saying Look2Me-Destroyer will close and re-open in approximately 10 seconds. Click OK
When Look2Me-Destroyer re-opens, click the Scan for L2M button, your desktop icons will disappear, this is normal.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove L2M button.
You will receive a Done Scanning message, click OK.
When completed, you will receive this message: Done removing infected files! Look2Me-Destroyer will now shutdown your computer, click OK.
Your computer will then shutdown.
Turn your computer back on.
Please post the contents of C:\Look2Me-Destroyer.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

If Look2Me-Destroyer does not reopen automatically, reboot and try again.

If you receive a message from your firewall about this program accessing the internet please allow it.

If you receive a runtime error '339' please download MSWINSCK.OCX from the link below and place it in your C:\Windows\System32 Directory.

If for some reason Look2Me-Destroyer doesn't reopen check that task scheduler is running.
If it isnt you can use sc.exe to start it

start>run sc start schedule press enter.

I changed the MSConfig to start up in Normal Mode. One of the instructions that NAC gave for removal of one of the viruses was to startup in Safe mode throughMSConfig. It was only after I started it up that way that I realized I could do the same thing with F8. My apologies. I changed it (to normal) and restarted. The warning still pops up though, but MSConfig shows I am in normal mode...

Thanks for returning your information, I don't know if you did not reboot or not, but you are still displaying a marker for Selective Startup.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfig] C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe /autoPlease Click Start > Run type "msconfig" without the quotes. When System Configuration Utility opens, click the Startup tab. Click the button to "Enable all" then Apply and OK your way out. Reboot for it to go into effect, and ignore warnings about the change. Once you are clean, you may return to Selective Startup to save your resources.

Please take your time, read and follow the directions carefully.

1. Please download Ewido Anti-Malware (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/)
Install ewido anti-malware
Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
The program will now open to the main screen.
When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
Then click on Start Update.

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful")
Exit Ewido, do not run the scan yet!
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.

2. Please download Brute Force Uninstaller (http://www.merijn.org/files/bfu.zip) to your desktop.
Right click the BFU folder on your desktop, and choose Extract All
Click "Next"
In the box to choose where to extract the files to,
Click "Browse"
Click on the + sign next to "My Computer"
Click on "Local Disk (C: ) or whatever your primary drive is
Click "Make New Folder"
Type in BFU
Click "Next", and Uncheck the "Show Extracted Files" box and then click "Finish".
3. RIGHT-CLICK HERE (http://metallica.geekstogo.com/alcanshorty.bfu) and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download Alcra PLUS Remover.
Save it in the same folder you made earlier (c:\BFU).

Do not do anything with these yet!

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping F8 until a menu appears. Highlight Safe Mode and hit enter.

4. Once in Safe Mode, Open Ewido:
Click on scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
Click Save report.
Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.
Close ewido anti-malware.

5. Then, please go to Start > My Computer and navigate to the C:\BFU folder.
Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe
Behind the scriptline to execute field click the folder icon http://metallica.geekstogo.com/foldericon.png and select alcanshorty.bfu
Press Execute and let the program do it’s job. (You ought to see a progress bar if you did this correctly.)
Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
Press exit to terminate the BFU program.
Reboot into normal windows and post the contents of Ewido text report that you saved and a new HiJackThis log. Let me know how the computer is running now.

Startup Services - Everything was already checked, and the option to select all was greyed out. Could it be the resident of Spybot that was preventing the change from taking place?? I shut it down while I OKed and restarted the computer.

Am running Ewido now, will post logs when finished.

I don't know if it is important, but halfway (44%) through the BFU execution, a window explaining that I was in Safe mode and certain functions were restricted blah blah blah came up. I clicked OK and BFU kept on running.

MSConfig still shows up in the HJT log. I think that teh Spybot resident is preventing the modification to the startup from taking place. How do I shut it off (the resident) so that the changes stick??

1st observation: Project1 is no longer appearing in the task manager upon startup.

Also, to fix the MSConfig problem, I went into Spybot, disabled both of the resident programs (TeaTimer and the other one) then made the change and restarted the computer. Upon restart, I did not receive the pop-up and re-started the resident programs. Unfortunately, when I restarted the resident programs, it changed the value back. GRRR!!!

I will also, assuming that the problems have been removed, installing most of the programs recommended in one of the Stickies in this forum.

I want you to look in MSConfig and be positive nothing is unchecked that you do not know is a safe program.

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

Hummm...ewido just updated from 3.5 to 4.0 a while back and Grisoft of AVG purchased the product. It might be changes they made I am not yet aware of. You may handle that however you wish, they can be delete manually. There is no need to quote my instruction, waste of space. Thank you:laugh:

ewido is a great program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

I just checked with Spyware S&D, and it still registers for CoolWWWSearch.

I ran Spybot again, it got rid of it and didn't find it again after reboot/rescan. I guess it's easier to remove when it is only one thing as opposed to 20 or 30...

That is true, though sometimes it is junk left in the registry that has had everything else removed. As such it can cause no problems. I good cleaning of the registry may be needed. I suggest CCleaner for the job:
http://www.ccleaner.com/ A good program that I use on all of my computers. If you use it, the registry cleaner is called "Issues", you must back up when prompted to be safe as you should always do when working in the registry. I also suggest you should be sure you are running the newest version of Spybot with the most current updates.
