View Full Version : Live Protection & Security Service will not run

Ran into a strange issue for which I have been going back and forth with support, but was wondering if anyone else has seen this and might have some suggestions while I wait for support to get back to me.

Running Spybot + AntiVirus Home Edition (v2.5) on Windows 10 Home (Version 10.0.14393 Build 14393).

I launched Start Center yesterday to update definitions, and noticed that Live Protection was set to "partially" running. I opened settings, went to advanced, and noticed that Live Protection was installed but not running for some reason. I tried to start it, but received an error saying the Live Protection Driver could not be started.

I then checked System Services, and the Security Center Service was also not running. When I tried to start it, I received an error saying it could not start the Security Center Service, gave an error number (-2146762495) "A required certificate is not within its validity period when verifying against the current system clock or time stamp in the signed file".

To fix Live Protection, I was instructed to uninstall Live Protection, reboot, then re-install in advanced settings. I did that, it did not work. Same error.

To fix the Security Center Service, I was told to run the spybotsd2-install-wsc-update-a.exe in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Spybot - Search & Destroy 2 directory. I did that, and it didn't install anything..once I clicked next during the install dialogue, it flashed quickly and disappeared. I verified this, as I have the same error.

Support finally told me to uninstall completely, delete the directory, then re-install with link they gave me. I did so, then reinstalled my licenses. I ran update, but noticed that Live Protection was once again listed as "partial". Tried the same instructions as above, same result...neither Live Protection or Security Center Service are on or working, and cannot be turned on.

I did check my windows update log, and everything is up to date, and doesn't look like I've installed any updates for a couple of weeks...and this problem literally just popped up yesterday morning. Just wondering if anyone else has seen anything like this, has any suggestions, etc.?

I have a mostly similar issue which started recently too. Only that in addition my spybot reinstall doesn't let me start the spybot settings and after a few dozen system reboots the automatic update service won't start either.

I have this issue also. Communicating with support they indicate that they are suffering certificate update issues and that windows is stopping the exe's/services from running as the certificates used to register the various executables has expired. Unfortunately it looks like some patience will be required while a solution is identified and prepared.

Uninstall spybot completely. Do a restart. Go to the folder location that it installs to:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Spybot - Search & Destroy 2

Delete everything sitting in there except your license files.

Re-install from the spybot-license.exe that they send you when you register.

Setup continues completely fresh and asks if you want to turn live protection on. Say yes, works.

I also have the same Security Center Service problem. I have V2.5 of Spybot. Has it been withdrawn? The newest version for downloading seems to be V2.4.

Live Protection can not be started error. Any suggestions for fix?

Any help is appreciated thanks. Live Protection is a big part of why I bought this Anti-virus.

Thanks!

Hello Silky,

Sorry to hear of the problem.

To enable Live Protection:

Open Spybot by right-clicking on the Spybot icon and choosing the option to “Run as administrator”.
https://www.safer-networking.org/images/runAsAdmin.png
Click on the Live Protection status in the Start Center.
This will open up the Live Protection Settings.
If you see “Live Protection is not installed”, click on “Show Live Protection advanced controls”.
Click on “Install Live Protection”.
If you receive an error message saying “Live Protection System Driver could not be installed”, you will have to restart your PC in order to re-attempt the installation.
Once you have restarted your machine, please open Spybot.
You should see a dialog asking you whether or not to install Live Protection.
Click Yes.
Live Protection should now be enabled.

If you do not see this dialog, you will have to reinstall Spybot.

Before reinstalling Spybot, you must uninstall the old installation.
Please see here for instructions on how to uninstall Spybot (https://www.safer-networking.org/faq/how-do-i-uninstall-spybot-2-search-destroy/).
Alternatively, you can run the Spybot installer, which will detect the current installation and offer to uninstall it.
Once you have uninstalled Spybot and restarted your machine the installation should begin automatically.
Spybot 2.4 can be downloaded from here. (https://www.safer-networking.org/spybot2allocator.php)
If you are a licensed user, you can download your license installer from the original email that was sent to at the time of purchase.
If you do not have your license installer, you can request that your license be resent to you by filling in the form here. (https://www.safer-networking.org/contact/resend-license/)
During the installation process you should see a dialog prompting you to “Install Live Protection”.
Click “Yes”.

If Live Protection is still not enabled, please go to the Live Protection settings in Spybot, and then click “Install Live Protection”.

When Live Protection has been successfully installed, you can then click “Activate Live Protection”.
Live Protection will then be enabled and actively protecting your PC.

If that does not work, please open a support ticket here (https://www.safer-networking.org/support/ticket/paid-user/)

Best regards.

Is there yet a solid procedure that will correct this error (-2146762495)?

Ttroebgyps, if you have Spybot 2.5, I think the error you are getting happens due to certificate issues. tashi linked to it in her post above:
https://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?74547-Spybot-Digital-Signature-Publisher-Unknown

Those errors no longer happen with Spybot 2.6, however there is sometimes an error that occurs with Spybot 2.6 when shutting the computer down. There is a work-around, but that can only be done with the free version, since you would need to have the antivirus files needed for scanning:
https://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?74636-Ticket-number-2017060480000256&p=476629&viewfull=1#post476629

I don't think I've seen a workaround for the Spybot + AV 2.6 versions posted here on the forum anywhere yet, so it might be best to send an email to support about it, and see what they say to do. :)
