Recently my Internet Explorer has been acting very strangely. Whenever I open a new window, the address bar is completely blank. When I try to click on it, it disappears and reappears with every click. The same with typing in it, it will appear and disappear with every letter typed in. Also, I'm getting a lot of scripting errors on websites where I've never got them. New windows, that is, those I open from an already existing window or link are really buggy and basically don't work half the time. Here's my log:

I forgot to add the fact that I'm getting those stupid "Com.org" messages whenever something doesn't load properly such as a webpage or a piece of an ad.

Welcome to the forum, as far as I can see, this is probably your problem:
http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/w32hwbota.html I suggest you read all the information under all tabs, I can help remove it but I cannot repair the damaage it may have done.
O23 - Service: Hardware Clock Driver (hwclock) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\System32\hwclock.exe (file missing)

1) Move HJT from the Desktop for safety. I prefer C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe, if you need additional instructions use these: http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm

2) C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
For your information, Viewpoint is installed by aol probably without your knowledge. I suggest you uninstall the resource waster.
http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
http://www.greatis.com/appdata/u/v/viewmgr.exe.htm
http://www.spywareinfo.com/newsletter/archives/2005/nov4.php#viewpoint

3) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

4) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

5) Disable the offending Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to Hardware Clock Driver and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

Delete the offending Service
Open HijackThis and click Config -> Misc Tools -> Delete an NT service.
In the Delete window, type (hwclock) and press OK.
OK any prompts, close HijackThis, and restart your computer.

6) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O23 - Service: Hardware Clock Driver (hwclock) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\System32\hwclock.exe (file missing)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

7) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\hwclock.exe <<< file (should be gone, just be sure)

8) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Post a new HJT log, let us know if that takes care of your problem.

Thanks

Thank you, but now it seems O23 - Service: Hardware Clock Driver (hwclock) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\System32\hwclock.exe (file missing) doesn't even appear anywhere anymore. Mind you, I haven't chosen to remove it, its just gone from the list, yet the problem is still present. Is there a manual way to remove that worm? I read all the tabs but they all required that Sophos software.

Thanks for returning your information. I cannot see an active antivirus program running in your log? Your Security Center should be screaming with popups about it? Going online without one is cyber-suicide anymore with the malware junk waiting for unprotected computers online. Here are three free programs, and I suggest AVG Free (if you use is stay with free, no trials).
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
http://www.free-av.com/
Download, install, update and do a complete system scan with one of those and let me know if it locates anything that can not be deleted. Complete name and pathway please.

This junk I suggest you use HJT to remove:
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Download with &DAP - C:\Program Files\DAP\dapextie.htm
O8 - Extra context menu item: Download &all with DAP - C:\Program Files\DAP\dapextie2.htm
see this >>> http://www.greatis.com/appdata/u/d/dap.exe.htm

Please check your Java program to see if it needs an update: C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\
see this >>> http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2

Did you install this item: MorpheusToolbar BHO

Complete the above instructions, post a last HJT log letting me know how you are running now.

Thanks

I did everything you said and the problem still persists. AVG found nothing, yet everytime I open a window from an already existing window the Address Bar begins to disappear when clicked or typed in. Mind you this does not happen when I open IE from the Quick Launch or the Desktop, only new windows within an already existing window cause the glitch.

Did you install this item: MorpheusToolbar BHO
Please post a response to this query.

Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

I gave you valid reasons for removing this program in the last instructions?
Did you review that information? I see it is still in the log?

This HJT log appears clean of malware, let's try a few things that may help Internet Explorer.
Here is a good site for IE issues. Perhaps you will find something here to help:
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/ie_tips.htm
It sounds like a setting has been changed and these trojans will do that. Look over all your IE settings about the way windows open and close to see if you can spot anything changed.

Let's check to make sure a corrupt or missing files is not the problem:
Click Start>Run, type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things. You may need your XP disc in your CD drive for this.

You can try method #2 at this link, we alreqdy tried #1

Gives these a try and let me know what happens.

Thanks

OK, it's your computer. If the suggestions I made do not help, then I am out of ideas. Since this seems to deal with Internet Explorer, you can try one of these sites for help with issues other than malware:

Thanks for letting me know:bigthumb: if you think of what you did to correct the problem, I would appreciate it if you would post to let me know, it might help others. If the topic is close, just find my avatar and click it, then send me a private message...thanks

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

If you are having no problems now, tashi:) will close your topic in a few days.
