I can not get my Task Manager to come up, I've tried Ctrl+Alt+Delete and right clicking on the taskbar, but yet nothing.

I tried going into regedit through Run but I get a message "regedit is not a valid Win32 application". A friend from another forum told me he saw a thread posted here once were another person had a similar problem.

PC specs (if needed)...
Pentium 4 3.0GHZ 800MHZ front bus Hyperthreading
2GB PC-4200 DDR2 Ram
ATi x800 GT PCI express
Creative Audigy 2
Windows XP Home Edition SP2

Welcome to the forum, you have a lot of nasty stuff on your computer, I suggest you keep it offline as much as possible until you are clean. Let's start like this:

Thanks to sUBs and any others who helped with this tool.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/combofix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
If the log is large You might need to post half in one reply half in another.

Include a fresh HJT log with the log from combofix.exe.

Thanks

Hi,

I downloaded the combofix.exe, but when I double click it it doesn't work. It flashes a command prompt and then the prompt is gone.

Give it another try, this tool will make your cleanup a lot easier.
Choose to save the file and save it to your Desktop. Open and run it from there.

Thanks

I found out how this happened to my system if that helps. My girl friends little brother got on my PC, uninstalled Avast and installed a P2P system.Won't help me but it sure should help you. You know now you don't want him on your computer.
http://pcpitstop.com/spycheck/p2p.asp
http://pcpitstop.com/spycheck/badtorrent.asp

A log of bad files went into combofix quarantine, make sure all of that stuff gets deleted along with the program when we finish.

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) combofix removed a lot of the PurityScan junk, but some is left. Look in Start > Control Panel > Add Remove Programs and uninstall PuritySCAN By OIN, OIN or OuterInfo or anything that looks like it, that you do not know. Uninstall any programs you know do not belong there.
If you do not see any of those, then download and run this uninstaller: http://www.outerinfo.com/howto.html

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.accoona.com/search_assist...paign=wdz0605a
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://www.accoona.com

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Sksuhcbe] C:\Program Files\?ymbols\w?nspool.exe

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

(some may be missing, removed by the uninstaller. Just do not miss any)

C:\Program Files\?ymbols\ <<< delete that folder

C:\WINDOWS\system32\PPPATC~1\ <<< delete that folder

6) These are the files that combofix found that are more than likely bad. I can't scan them on your computer. Use then free online scanners:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html

and once you know with certainty they are bad, use this tool to remove them:
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=320
Make sure you read the instructions so you know what you are doing. You can also boot into safe mode and delete them manually if you wish. Just be careful only to delete the bad files.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\aswBoot.exe
C:\WINDOWS\b.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\vbzip10.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\taskkill.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\a.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\wnstssv.exe

7) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Post a new HJT log and let me know how the computer is running now.

Thanks

I am concerned about this item: C:\WINDOWS\system32\PPPATC~1\regsvr32.exe
Here is the Google on it: http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLG,GGLG:2006-16,GGLG:en&q=PPPATC%7E1
I believe it is part of PurityScan adware/OuterInfoNetwork junk. The only way you will know for sure is to make sure all files and folders are showing, then open that folder:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\PPPATC~1\ <<< and right click the stuff in it and check the properties to see what it is. I could be wrong, but I think you will find it needs to go. Use the scanners I posted to scan any files you find in there. Once you are satisfied the stuff is bad, then delete it even if you have to boot to safe mode to do it.

I don't see any other issues in the HJT log, and that was a great job following the complex instructions:bigthumb:

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

Let me know what you find, I want to be sure one way or another before I ask tashi to close the topic.

Thanks...Phil

Got it checked out, and removed it. Thanks again for your time and help with that.
I didn't find the instructionis to hard to follow, very easy to understand. Thanks man. :)

Good job, I was 99% sure that was malware. That PurityScan adware junk gets harder and harder to remove. Great job:bigthumb: tashi:) will close you in a few days.

Thanks...Phil
