• Welcome Guest, to the Spybot Forums! It's 2025, and we just upgraded our forum software.

Today is Safer Internet Day, and with our new forum, you can finally use passkeys to login. That was about time!

Of course, you could ask if a forum is still useful, with so many social media networks out there where you might already have an account, and met a lot of users. You can now use your login from some of those networks to log in here. And by posting here, your question and data is stored on our servers and not automatically shared with a whole social media network.

We'll also start using the forum for small bits of information, announcements and more again.

How to save ignored Cookies?

Every so often for reasons I cannot explain my "Ignore Cookies" list disappears. I want to know how to save this information so that it can be restored when this happens. Can I assume that the "Excludes" folder, located in two places, is what I need to backup? If so, which one do I save a copy of or must I save both?

THANKS

There is only one Ignore cookies file. When you go into Spybot > Mode > Advanced mode > Settings > Ignore cookies > check any cookies that you want to keep that list is stored in the Cookies.sbe file located in one of the following directories/folders:
  • Windows 95 or 98:
    C:\Windows\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Excludes
  • Windows ME:
    C:\Windows\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Excludes
  • Windows NT, 2000 or XP:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Excludes

The only advice that I can give you concerning the disappearing of the "Ignore cookie" list is to make sure that you close (exit) the SpybotSD.exe program before restarting or shutting down your system. After initially reading the Cookies.sbe file, SpybotSD.exe maintains the list in memory and only rewrites the file when it shuts down. If SpybotSD.exe is running when you do a system restart or shut down it appears that SpybotSD.exe is terminated before it has a chance to save its files (the Cookies.sbe included).

Thanks..... just the information I was looking for. The "Ignore Cookies" is one of the main features why I keep using Spybot S&D.

I always close any application before rebooting, so that part is not applicable in my case. As I wrote, this only happens sporadically and for reasons I haven't been able to figure out. Sometimes, just rebooting again brings the data back . . . very strange. It used to happen on my old system and it just happened again last night on this newly built system (both XP SP-2). Having to revisit 20+ Forums and try to remember the passwords for each to login again to create a new cookie gets old really fast, if you know what I mean, Vern? ;)

Do you use Fast User Switching?

As md usa spybot fan mentioned, there is only one Cookies.sbe file shared by all users. In the past some using Fast User Switching have noticed problems with this list, possibly because the file is locked by another user.

I've never done any testing to confirm this, so it's just a possible reason for the issue, not the only one.
