Hello,

My friend's laptop is not well.

He let me look at it. I immediately ran BitDefender's Online Scan. I saw that it detected at least one trojan, but a BSOD interrupted the scan. The trojan (and whatever else BitDefender found) was removed (I assume). It did not show up on a subsequent scan. I also ran Kaspersky's online scan. Ad-Aware and Spybot found a few things.

The homepage always reverts back to about:blank

I get the BSOD every once in a while. It does not seem related to any specific kind of activity.

I have run XMemtest86 and Microsoft's memory testers. I have checked the hard drive for bad sectors with two different programs.

Computer had McAfee Enterprise 8.0 installed. I uninstalled it. I want to clean the computer before I install AntiVIR.

Here is the HijackThis log:

Welcome to the forum, have you been able to resolve your issues? If not I will see what I can do. Let's start like this.

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
O9 - Extra button: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {7FC63E31-AE29-462C-9051-A3EA235C1035} - (no file) (HKCU)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {7FC63E31-AE29-462C-9051-A3EA235C1035} - (no file) (HKCU)
O21 - SSODL: AIMToolbar - {E94C63BB-249B-1DC7-1509-1C509E418A3C} - c:\program files\aim toolbar\winkggn32.dll

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

4) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

c:\program files\aim toolbar\ <<< delete that folder (the toolbar may or may not be bad, but I am almost positive this file is: winkggn32.dll <<< if you would like to scan it, use one or more of these free online scanners:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html

5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Post a new HJT log and tell me about any problems that are still occuring. I need error messages (BSOD) word for word.

You need to get an antivirus program on this computer if you are taking it online. If you need a free one:

Thanks
