View Full Version : Infected with About:Blank?

Thank you to everyone in advance! I think my computer is infected with About:Blank. If I close multiple windows, I either get (1) a window with the MIE icon in the left corner with About:Blank - Microsoft Internet Explorer (This window will close) or (2) a window with the MIE icon in the left hand corner and nothing else or (3) a window with a window (when opening a new window) inside a window with MIE icon in left hand corner (cannot do anything with the interior window). I have run-in both safe mode and regular mode-Spybot S&D 1.4, XoftSpy 4.22, Windows Defender, McAfee Anti-Virus, CWShredder V2.0, AdAware SE Personal 1.06r1. Nothing is detected. I ran Panda ActiveScan-nothing is detected. Also ran TrendMicro Housecall-detected grayware/spyware TSPY_LOADER. I did not accept the option to remove as I am not very computer saavy and back out when message is received that deletion may cause other programs to not run. I have been reading forums and trying to figure this out for a week now, but am getting nowhere! Any help would be greatly appreciated. HijackThis log follows -

Hello TigerFan1979,

Welcome to Safer Networking Forums :)

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp).
Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
Click the "Download" button to the right.
Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_09-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

I don't see anything malicious, but we'll do a scan to be sure. :)

Please download, install, and update AVG Anti-Spyware (formerly Ewido) (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/)

Load Ewido and then click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
Click on the Scanner tab at the top and then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run, so be prepared.
Ewido will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. Ewido will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (like on the Desktop).

In your reply, please post the report from AVG and a new HijackThis log. Please tell me how your computer is running. :)

Thanks,
tea

Tea: Thank you so much for responding. :flowers: I have done what you have suggested. The AVG came up with no infections. I did not run it in safe mode - should I have? I still get the About:Blank window when closing down MIE, but the window does hang as it did before. It flashes by and closes down. If I run on safe mode with internet, this does not happen. Does that mean anything? Thanks again. Look forward to hearing from you.

Hello,

A little test, please.:)

I want you to disable your McAfee Firewall, enable your Windows Firewall, then reboot your computer. Let me know how it behaves when surfing and general use.

Thanks,
tea

I disabled the McAfee Firewall and enabled my Windows Firewall. No change - still have the About:Blank when closing MIE. Am also having what appears to be MIE window with icon in left corner and nothing else on blue bar. Window is white/blank. Will not close unless I close down all MIEs that are open. Out of curiousity - did I get this at one of the gaming sites I go to? Comcast gaming, MSN gaming - but sometimes download "trial" games from both these sites which go to other sites - only one I can remember right now is Big Fish. I try to be so careful too  Thank you for your continued help!

Hello,

I can see what you've downloaded from the 016 entries. Don't be too hard on yourself. ;) If there was anything dangerous there I would have had you delete them already.

Go to start -> control panel -> Display properties -> Desktop -> Customize Desktop... -> Web tab, then uncheck and delete everything you find in there (except for "My current home page"),

Also remove the checkmark from the the Lock Desktop Items box if it is checked.
Apply.
Apply and Exit Display properties.

Let me know if everything is back to normal now.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/combofix.exe)
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please, along with a new HijackThis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Thanks,
tea

Hello,

nothing there, not even "my current home page." Please don't think me too silly......do you have a home page set for IE?

Tea:

Not silly - in MIE if I go to Tools Internet Options, the following is set to my homepage - http://www.comcast.net/home.html

Right now, I have seven (5) blank MIEs, two (2) half-blank MIEs and this one active MIE - been on the computer since about 9:00 (It's 12:30 now).

Hello,

Download and Save blacklight to your desktop.
F-Secure Blacklight: https://europe.f-secure.com/blacklight/try.shtml
Double-click blbeta.exe then accept the agreement.
click > scan then > next,
You'll see a list of all items found.
Don't choose rename yet! I want to see the log first, because legit items can also be present there...
There must be also a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers)
Post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Thanks,
tea

Tea: Ran Blacklight with "No hidden items found." Report is below. This is so strange that everything seems to be coming up clean, but I still get the blank MIEs?! I don't want you to think I am deserting - I am leaveing to go on a cruise late tomorrow evening and will not be taking my laptop - airport is too much of a hassle nowdays (think I'll also be going through withdrawals without it). If you do not hear from me tomorrow - I won't be back until the 16th. But soon as I get back, I'll be back on it to continue - okay? Thanks so very much for your help! Ann

Hello,

Thanks for letting me know....we'll leave the light on for you! I hope you have a wonderful time. :bigthumb:

Download Silent Runners.zip (http://tinyurl.com/8bmsr) and extract it to a new folder on your Desktop. Run the Silent Runners.vbs file. You will receive a prompt: "Do you want to skip supplementary searches?" - click "NO." If your antivirus has a script blocker, you will get a warning asking if you want to allow Silent Runners.vbs to run. This script is not malicious so please allow it. A text file will appear in the folder - it's not done, let it run. (It won't appear to be doing anything!) Once the "All Done!" prompt flashes up, open the text file, and copy & paste it in your next reply.

Hi Ann,

Also ran TrendMicro Housecall....Can you go back and do that again.....this time, let it clean, and if it lets you save a log, post it here please?

I should have asked last post....the same problem remains? Has anything changed?

Hi Ann,

I have some research to do here for you, plus a few things to check on from your logs. Don't wait around for me, as it might not be until morning when I get something for you.

Thanks for your patience. :)

Okay - thank you for your patience and perseverance in helping me! :bigthumb: Will check tomorrow after work (guess I had better go in tomorrow). Thanks again. Later, Ann

Hi Ann......hope your first day back to work was an easy one. ;)

First thing for you to do here today is this, please:

Please go to http://virusscan.jotti.org , click on Browse, and upload the following file for analysis:

C:\WINDOWS\McAfee.com

Then click Submit. Allow the file to be scanned, and then please copy and paste the results here for me to see.

Please do the same for this file : C:\Documents and Settings\Ann\Application Data\GDIPFONTCACHEV1.DAT

Must be doing something wrong – when I go to “Browse” and find C:\Windows\McAfee.com – it doesn’t let me choose only that file. McAfee.com has a folder “Free Scan” which when opened has the following files:

Avdat, AvDAT Module, Network Associates, Inc.

Mcfscan.dll, 2.1.0.4856, McAfee Free Virus Scan

Mcscan32.dll, 4.4.0.0, AV Scanning Engine

Names, DAT file, 718 KB

Rwabs16.dll, 1.0.0.0, nwabs thunking layer – 16 bit side

Rwabs32.dll, 1.0.0.0, nwabs thunking layer – 32 bit side

Scan, DAT file, 7,517 KB

Signlic, Text Document, 6 KB
It wants me to choose one of the above files. I tried typing in only C:\Windows\McAfee.com, but it comes back with “The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file.”

Even worse with the C:\\Documents & Settings\Ann\Application Data\GDIPFONTCACHEV1.DAT
I find the file you are refering to on the ComboFix.Log, but when I browse I can't find it at all.

Can you explain to me one more time (sorry for being so "dense" today) what to do and I will try again.

Thanks, Ann

Hello,

Don't worry about the McAfee. I just wanted to be sure. ;)

Do have your settings to show hidden files and folders? Maybe that's why you couldn't find the other one.

Please enable viewing of hidden files as follows:
1) Go to My Computer, and click on the "Tools" menu
2) Click "Folder options"
3) Select the "View" tab
4) Make sure "Show hidden files and folders" is selected
5) Make sure "Hide extensions for known file types" is unchecked
6) Make sure "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" is unchecked

Rehide them when you're done. :)

TigerFan1979
2006-10-18, 05:15
Ah - that's what it was - the hidden files :) Jotti's malware scan results for GDIPFONTCACHEV1.DAT follows -
Status: OK (Note: this file has been scanned before. Therefore, this file's scan results will not be stored in the database)
MD5: 35cfce7929c60e8a98450de7f7cb2f02
Scanner results - "Found nothing" for all scans
I guess it scanned the file when I typed it in since the "Status" seems to indicate such. Does it mean anything if I run in "Safe Mode with Networking" and have no problems with MIE?

Thanks, Ann

Hello Ann,

Sorry for my delayed reply. :(

Are there any other user accounts on this PC?

As for your question, there has to be something there that starts up to cause this in normal mode.

Create a Startup List

Open HiJackThis
Click on the "Config..." button on the bottom right
Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
Check off the 2 boxes next to the Box that says "Generate StartupList log"
Click on the button "Generate StartupList log"
Copy and past the StartupList from the notepad into your next post

Regards,
tea

Hi Ann,

Whatever this is, it's hiding really well. All these scans have turned up very little...but there are still options, so I'm game if you are!

Please download WebRoot SpySweeper from HERE (http://www.webroot.com/shoppingcart/tryme.php?bjpc=64011) (It's a 2 week trial):
Double-click sspsetup1.exe to install it.
Before installation it may ask you to check for program updates. Click YES.
Then finish installation leaving all the default options.
Once the program is installed, it will ask if you wish to reboot now choose YES.
We need to go into Safe Mode from here. To get into Safe Mode, while your computer is restarting continually tap the F8 key until a menu appears. User your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
Open SpySweeper, by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
If will ask you if you want to run the Diagnostic version of SpySweeper click YES.
You will receive a prompt telling you it's running in Diagnostic version. Click OK.
Click Options on the left side (towards the bottom).
Click the Sweep tab.
Under Items to Sweep make sure the following are checked:
Windows registry
Memory objects
Cookies
Compressed Files
System Restore Folder
Under Other Options make sure the following are checked:
Sweep all user accounts
Enable Direct Disk Sweeping
Sweep for rootkits
Click OK. Click Start.
When it's done scanning, it will list any items found. Click Next.
Make sure everything found has a check next to it and click Next.
It will quarantine all items found.
Click Session Log in the lower left corner.
Click Save to File and save it on your desktop.
Close SpySweeper.
Restart your computer into normal Windows.
Paste the contents of the session log you saved into your next reply (Spy Sweeper Session Log.txt).
If for some reason you didn't save the log you can get to it by clicking Options on the left. Then, View Session Log will be listed under Other Options.

Addition Ann,

Could you please go back and run Trend Micro again and post the report so I can see a full path to what it found? I have some more eyes on this, so more ideas of what's causing it are coming in.:D:

Tea:
Long as you are game, I am too! :) Ran Spy Sweeper several times in “safe” mode. First time found “Webtrends cookie”, did the next/next procedure and it put it in quarantine where it still sits. Was not sure how to get the "session log file too large for display" to display. Let me know and I will try again. Ran TrendMicro again also.

Hello Ann,

Do you use MetaMail?

TigerFan1979
2006-10-26, 01:31
Tea:
No, I don't think I use MetaMail - hotmail, outlook and comcast. I am not sure what MetaMail is really, but I see it in my tray (I guess it is call the tray? The area on the right hand side lower bar). Not sure when it showed up (I think it has been there a while) either.

HHmm...

I see 3 instances of it running in running processes :

C:\PROGRA~1\METAMA~1\METAMA~1\METAMA~1.EXE
C:\Program Files\Metamail Inc\Metamail Tray\Metamail Trust Manager.exe
C:\PROGRA~1\METAMA~1\METAMA~1\METAMA~2.EXE

You said the problem doesn't happen in safe mode.

I'd like to see what this does, please.

Click start>run> type in msconfig click the startup tab and uncheck all the instances of Meta Mail. Apply/OK out and reboot. Let me know if this makes any difference.

I did as instructed (Stopped MetaMail from starting up). No difference. I did find out, however, that MetaMail is used for Outlook Express Mail.

Not sure if this was a good idea or not, but I downloaded MIE 7. All problems have stopped. Do you think MIE7 over wrote whatever was causing the problem with MIE 6? Or is it still lurking somewhere ready to spring out again?

Hi Ann,

How is it running now after a few days? Heh, if all is well, I'm not going to look a gift horse in the mouth after all we've been through.

Hi Ann,

I happened to mention this last night to a Moderator at another forum, without going into details, and he said he downloaded IE7 and his problems stopped as well. NOW he tells me! I don't use IE, so it may very well happen to me too, if I open it and use it. I believe you solved it.:bigthumb:

If I don't hear from you again, please take care!

tea

Tea: Thank you for all the help!:bigthumb: So far - so good. I have found a few site (like my work web mail) that for some reason does not run right, so I have downloaded Mozilla Firefox for that. Seems to be okay all the way around. I'm with you - not looking the horse in the mouth. Hopefully, this will be the end of it. Again, thank you for your persistance and diligence in helping me. Couldn't have done it without you! ;) Take care. Ann
