View Full Version : Some issues with pop-ups, iexplore.exe, and failure to install windows updates via IE

Basically I'm getting IE pop-ups when I'm using IE as well as Firefox. I notice that iexplore.exe is running when I don't want it to and sometimes multiple instances start. Also, whenever I try to download/install windows updates using IE, the downloads complete but the installs fail. The only way I've been able to update is by turning on auto-updates and doing the update-upon-shutdown. Just another random question, is wmiprvse.exe a safe process? I often see it as a NETWORK SERVICE when I start up my computer but then it goes away after a bit.

Welcome to the forum, I see indications in this log: O21 - SSODL: incestuously - {03413bf7-e34c-445b-bfc0-a2b127255871} - (no file) That we are probably dealing with a Smitfraud infection. There is other junk also. You may want to keep this computer offline as much as possible until you are clean, this junk will attract more.
This: wmiprvse.exe is more than likely this: http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/wmiprvse/ but as you can see by the Google it can be used by hackers also:

We will start with a look for Smitfraud, like this:
Please download SmitfraudFix (http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip) (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.
Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

OK, thanks for returning your information, let's proceed with the instructions at this link: http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=4015 When you finish the instructions, post the three logs in this same topic using the "Post Reply" button.
Understand that you do not need to run the SmitfraudFix "Search" again, move to "Clean". Once you post the logs, we will probably have some manual stuff yet to remove? I will respond as soon as possible after you post.
Spybot-S&D: Be sure to follow the directions to save the scan report but do not post it here unless requested by a helper.

Hi and thanks for the reply!
I did everything that the instructions said except I forgot to delete my cookies before the ewido scan so it picked up some tracking cookies - not a big deal, right? Here are the logs:

You have run ewido then chosen to "No action taken" when it found junk. Please run ewido again and this time delete what it finds unless you know it is not bad. Once you have finished, save the scan report.
Then let's do this:
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,userinit.exe
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0A87E45F-537A-40B4-B812-E2544C21A09F} - (no file)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Post the ewido scan report and a new HJT log.
