New Install
worked fine on a Sony Laptop and a purpose built 3.2G P4 system this one (a Dell 2.8G P4 - OS and IE will come from the HJT log) shows a MAILBOT infection in C:\Windows\system.ini on every scan. Response to every scan is to delete and while the info displayed indicates that a reboot and re-scan is needed, I have done this multiple times to no avail.
I followed the instructions and started with an online scan by Panda. The resulting log is included below.

I booted to safe mode, ran the Spybot scan from there with the same results. Multiple scans with intervening boots and all results the same MAILBOT shows up as part of C:\Windows\system.ini (Although review of the file shows nothing out of the ordinary)
HJT log included below.
Suggestions??

Lets see a SSD results report
Post a SpyBot results report.
Run SpyBot check for problems, when its finished right click and choose copy results (not full report) to clipboard and past that back here please.

Thanks

Why do you think its system.ini ?
Post the contents of it for us please

NorCalAustringer

I associated it with system.ini because the results page of SSD reported it that way (to my uneducated reading). I can post a screen shot of the final page if you want it but it basically has the one entry in red of Mailbot preceeded by a plus sign then a checkbox with a green check. Expansion of the entry yields the expansion box followed by a green checkbox followed by the entry Autorun Settings with C:\Windows\system.ini under it in the Problem column then INI Remove and an icon that I believe refers to a registry entry under the Kind column. I interpreted that in my first post as indicating the the Mailbot problem was associated with system.ini.
Sorry if I created a 'rat hole'.
Here follows the file it refers to:
; for 16-bit app support
[drivers]
wave=mmdrv.dll
timer=timer.drv
[mci]
[Windows]
load=C:\WINDOWS\inet20001\services.exe
[driver32]
[386enh]
woafont=dosapp.FON
EGA80WOA.FON=EGA80WOA.FON
EGA40WOA.FON=EGA40WOA.FON
CGA80WOA.FON=CGA80WOA.FON
CGA40WOA.FON=CGA40WOA.FON
device=dva.386

Remove this line:
load=C:\WINDOWS\inet20001\services.exe
Be carefull to only remove it.

Good

Think Prevention: Put in place a good hosts file
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
How To Download and Extract the HOSTS file:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts2.htm
Repeat that proccess about once or twice a month

To help avoid reinfection see "So how did I get infected in the first place?"

Hey Lonny, Thanks again for your help. I used the SSD hosts file. Is the MVPS one better? Sorry for putting this question here, I looked elsewhere but the answer didn't jump out at me.

I use winhelp2002's hosts. does that help ?
It is a bit more updated to todays threats than SSD's although you can use both at the same time.

Im Glad we could help
Since the problems are solved Im going to close the topic now, this keeps others with similar problems from posting there logs/question here, they should start a new topic.
If you should need to post another log for the same PC let one of us know via a PM (personal message).
