hello!
Early symptoms: general PC operation slow and the browser hijacked
Spybot detected deskbar, smitfraud-C and that XP SP2 features like firewall, automatic updates were disabled. Search and destroy option does not permanently remove these malware. They keep coming back.
Have installed Ewido and Windows defender too. Windows Malicious software removal tool indicates a backdoor/win32 bot that it is unable to remove.
Current status: System speed OK. But no able to browse any website. I am able to connect to ISP and with luck open 1 page of a website. I am not able to download updates for Windows defender/ Spybot/Avast/Ewido. I am also not able to login to Instant Messengers like AIM, Skype and Yahoo.

Hello prezanna,
Welcome to Safer Networking Forums :)
1. Download this file - combofix.exe (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/combofix.exe)
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.
You're running a very old version of HijackThis.
* Click here (http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTsetup.exe) to download HJTsetup.exe
Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
Please then delete the old version to avoid confusion.
Thanks,
tea

Hello,
Yes, I just found out the tool has been pulled for updates. Sorry about that.
Could you do me a favor please?
The current formatting of your log makes it difficult to read. Please open Notepad:
On top, click Format >uncheck Word Wrap. Then post a new HijackThis log, please. :)
Thank you much!

Hello,
Download SDFix and save it to your desktop.
http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.zip
Do not run it yet.
Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key.
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.
In Safe Mode, right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose "Extract All",
Open the extracted folder and double click "RunThis.bat" to start the script.
Type Y to begin the script.
It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back with a new HijackThis log.
Thanks,
tea

Hello,
Thanks for that. :)
We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make. Open Windows Defender.
Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender. After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.
I see you have Ewido on board. It's name has changed, so the update may look a little different. ;) Please make sure it's completely updated, then do the following:
Please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. To boot into Safe Mode, please restart your computer. Tap F8 before Windows loads. Select Safe Mode on the screen that appears.
Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {A8B28872-3324-4CD2-8AA3-7D555C872D96} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {A8B28872-3324-4CD2-8AA3-7D555C872D96} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinDLL (windirx.dll)] rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\windirx.dll,start
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinDLL (qwex.dll)] rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\qwex.dll,start
O20 - Winlogon Notify: Dynamic Directory - C:\WINDOWS\system32\IhtelNic.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: Shell Extensions - C:\WINDOWS\system32\f6l00g3me6.dll (file missing)
O23 - Service: Remote Plugin Service - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsyss.exe
Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix Checked".
Delete the following files, if present:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\windirx.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\qwex.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsyss.exe
In Safe Mode, load AVG Anti-Spyware and click on the Scanner tab at the top and then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run, so be prepared.
AVG Anti-Spyware will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. AVG Anti-Spyware will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (like on the Desktop).
Restart back into Normal Mode.
In your reply, please post the report from Ewido and a new HijackThis log. Please also tell me how your computer is running?? :)
Thanks,
tea

Hello,
Yes, go ahead with the trial version of AVG AntiSpyware. It will work around what you already have, and if you desire, after your log is clean again you can uninstall it. Thank you for asking!:D:

Hello!
I am learning - Ewido is now AVG spyware !!
I followed all the steps -
Hijackthis in safe mode threw up -
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
instead of what you had indicated R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {A8B28872-3324-4CD2-8AA3-7D555C872D96} - (no file)- which comes through in Hijackthis normal mode!

Hello,
That looks great! :) Just the one line to fix with HijackThis, and you can do that in normal mode. If it doesn't go away, you might try disabling Windows Defender just long enough to fix it.
Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {A8B28872-3324-4CD2-8AA3-7D555C872D96} - (no file)
Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix Checked".
Reboot.
Click Start Menu > Run > type (or copy and paste)
%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe
Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it ( something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.
All those files AVG found were in System Restore.
Go to Start Menu > Run > type
cleanmgr
Click OK, Disk Cleanup will open and start calculating the amount of space that can be freed, Once thats finished it will open the Disk Cleanup options screen, click the More Options tab then click Clean up on the system restore area and choose Yes at the confirmation window which will remove all the restore points except the one we just created.
To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.
Your log looks clean. :D: If there are no further problems :
Below I have included a number of recommendations on how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously! These few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems.
Regularly go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows, including the latest version of Internet Explorer. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer. You should also turn on the Windows automatic update feature.
It is very important to maintain your Firewall.
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html).
In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:
SpywareBlaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html)
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html).
SpywareGuard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html)
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial50.html).
Ad-Aware SE (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware)
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial48.html).
Spybot-Search & Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download)
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial43.html). Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.
IE/Spyad:
It places over 5000 malicious websites and domains in your IE's restricted zone.
IE/Spyad (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm)
Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.
* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. A lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.
Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
Please make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.
Take care!
