Hi minimalist,

I think you have several infections on your computer.
First download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Once the desktop loads a text file will open (report.txt), you can close it - the file has already been saved.

Run HijackThis. Click "Do a System Scan Only", and place a check next to the following items (if found):

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,Search = http://in.webcounter.cc/--/?ydtfs (obfuscated)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://searchbar.findthewebsiteyouneed.com

Click FIX CHECKED. Close HijackThis.
Reboot your computer.
Post the contents of the text file that opened earlier (you can find it at C:\fixwareout\report.txt ) into this topic.

Next, download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe
http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

if you receive, while running option #1, an error similar like: ''C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe,
C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt the system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and microsoft windows applications. choose close to terminate the application.."...then please use option 5 or the web page link in the l2mfix folder to solve this error condition. Do not run the fix portion without fixing this first.

Hi Metallica,

Thanks for the rapid response. I've done everything you recommended however for some reason the report.txt with FixWareOut you talked about didn't materialise and its not in the location suggested. However the programme appeared to be 'doing its thing'!!

Here is the report from l2mfix thanks for your continued help:

Very good. :)

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter. It will process then start. Your desktop and icons will disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, it will be ready for a reboot. Press any key to reboot. After the reboot notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!
If after the reboot the log does not open double click on it in the l2mfix folder.

Then surf to:
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
Upload this file to be scanned:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\rpcc.dll

Let me know the results.

Hmmm. I'm kind of disappointed by the Kasperksy result.
Unless you know where that file came from, can you please surf to:
http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=5.0

Follow the instructions there to upload:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\rpcc.dll
As a link to this topic you can use:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=7815

I'd like to have a look at it myself.

Ok Pieter... good job I checked back! I'll just get on the case now! :)

All done Pieter!

Metallica

I had a brief look, but that's really all I needed.
It is packed in a manner that suggest they didn't want to reveal the content.
It also is unsigned. This together convinces me it is trouble.
Which kind I'll leave up to the people that get paid to add it to their definitions. ;)

Can you please download Unlocker from:
http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/

Install the program and find:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\rpcc.dll
Rightclick the file and choose Unlocker from the menu.

Then delete the file.

Only if that was successfull fix this entry:
O20 - Winlogon Notify: rpcc - C:\WINDOWS\system32\rpcc.dll
and reboot.

Post a new HijackThis log when you are done.

Regards,

Very good. :bigthumb:
Now copy the part in bold below into notepad and save it as Appid.reg
Set Filetype to "all files"

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\RunOnceEx]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\WgaLogon]

Doubleclick that file and confirm you want to merge it with the registry.

Reboot again and post another HijackThis log.

Hi Pieter!

Thanks for all your help! At first I had no problems then last night around 3am the laptop suddenly turned itself off whilst I was running a game and showed the blue screen of death

Now whenever I switch it on it loads up fine (check though it has to perform a disk check) but even if I just leave it on the account select screen it turns itself off with the blue screen and starts again in a vicious circle. I am currently working on safe mode with networking! Sorry to bother you again but is there anything I can post to help resolve this new predicament?

P.S. I tried a system restore to no further back than the last correction we made but to no avail :fear:

Cheers Hywel

Can you post the error on the BSOD?

If it goes to fast, turn off the automatic reboot so you can actually see the error when it happens—chances are it will tell us enough to let you troubleshoot further. To change the recovery settings to disable automatic rebooting:

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.

2. Click the Advanced tab.

3. Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings to open the Startup and Recovery dialog box.

4. Clear the Automatically restart check box, and click OK the necessary number of times.

5. Restart your computer for the settings to take effect.

Now when you go to shut down and a fatal error occurs, you'll at least see it and it won't cause an automatic reboot.

Hi Pieter,

All the usual stuff about F8 and contacting your administrator came up but here is the technical info I assume you need that popped up on the blue screen:

Technical Information:

***STOP: 0x0000008E (0xc0000005,0xF0122BEF,0xEF75CA20,0x00000000)

Hope that is of help, Hywel :)

Hi mate,

I've just been reading up about this and I've just changed the acceleration on my graphics card from none to full. Could this be a factor?

Download haxfix.exe (http://users.telenet.be/marcvn/tools/haxfix.exe)
and save it to your desktop.

Double click on haxfix.exe to install haxfix. (standard installation path is c:\program Files\haxfix)
Checkmark "Create a desktop icon"
Click "Next"
When the installation is completed, make sure that the checkmark "Launch HaxFix" is placed
Click "Finish"

A red "dos window" (dos box) will open with options:
1. Make logfile
2. Run auto fix
3. Run manual fix
E. Exit Haxfix

Select option 1. Make logfile by typing 1 and then pressing Enter
Haxfix will start scanning the computer. When it is finished a logfile will open: haxlog.txt > (c:\haxfix.txt)
Copy the contents of that logfile and paste it into this thread.

It could be , but I'd like to rule out the Haxdoor infection that often causes this kind of errors:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/903251/EN-US/

Well I put the graphics card to zero and still I get the error but the third variable changed to 0xEEE77A20 so I'll have a look at this Haxdoor virus. I've noticed it requires the use of the Windows CD-Rom. Annoying my ROM drive has been bust for quite sometime - is there a way around this?

Go up a few posts. You can use the Haxfix I posted.
That tool was developed after the MicroSoft page was put up.
Which is hopelessly behind now anyway.
I just gave the link because it mentions the errors.

Have you tried going back to the old settings and did that help?

If not please copy the part in bold below into notepad and save it as services.bat

cd\
sc query state= all >> services.txt
services.txt

Doubleclick the file when you are done and it will produce and open a textfile with all the current services listed.
I'd like to have a look at that.

I'm almost sure I have found the problem, but the solution is almost two years old.

Give me a few minutes to read up.

Metallica

OK. Let's play stupid first. If it doesn't work we may have to get clever. :)

Run HijackThis and click Misc Tools. In that section click Delete an NT Service
In the prompt paste:
esentprf.exe
and click OK.

Then reboot and

download the Registry Search Tool (http://billsway.com/vbspage/vbsfiles/regsrch.zip).
Unzip the contents of RegSrch.zip to a convenient location.
Double-click on RegSrch.vbs.
If you have an anti-virus installed it might prompt you about a running script. Please ignore this warning and allow the script to run.
In the "Enter search string (case insensitive) and click OK..." box paste this string:
esentprf

Click "OK" to search the registry for that string.
Wait for a few minutes while it completes the search.
Click "OK" to open the results in WordPad.
Copy and paste the entire results into your next post.

All done mate,

REGEDIT4

Good. Looks like that wasn't so dumb. :)

Sheer luck probably.

Let's remove it from the old ControlSet just to be on the safe side.

Copy the part in bold below into notepad and save it as oldservice.reg
Set Filetype to "All"
Doubleclick the file and confirm you want to merge it with the registry.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Enum\Root\LEGACY_ESENTPRF.EXE]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Services\esentprf.exe]

Now reboot and let me know if the computer works properly.

Hi Pieter, Sadly it turned itself off again and I got this technical message,

***STOP 0x0000008E (0xc0000005, 0xF00FA99E, 0xEEEEEA20, 0x00000000)

Metallica

That stinks.

Sorry, but we have pretty much ruled out malware.
Can you do a test of your memory:
This article gives a good description of what to use and how:
http://insight.zdnet.co.uk/hardware/servers/0,39020445,2132568,00.htm

Let me know.

Hi Pieter - I've just read through that and I can't create a disk at the moment because my ROM drive is bust and I have no floppy drive on my laptop :(

I'll just have to go out and get an external drive unless there are any other alternatives before we continue...

Metallica

I never tried this one:
http://home.earthlink.net/~alegr/index.htm
but it promises to run under Windows.

Thanks for that mate! It seems to be running fine - I'll update you on the progress!

Metallica
2006-10-07, 21:01
On one hand I hope it finds your memory OK.
On the other I'm hoping it will tell us what's wrong.

Waiting for your update.
