Hello MicInTampaFL,

Welcome to Safer Networking Forums :)

Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ShowWnd] ShowWnd.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmsws.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmsws.exe
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{58E91B20-0A6D-41BC-A69E-5CD32F7D845A}: NameServer = 85.255.114.8,85.255.112.189
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{71363302-5D52-4B31-ADFE-FB0A5297A62D}: NameServer = 85.255.114.8,85.255.112.189
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{A86979AA-59A8-4D24-A0C3-CB6730E296F9}: NameServer = 85.255.114.8,85.255.112.189
O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.114.8 85.255.112.189
O17 - HKLM\System\CS2\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.114.8 85.255.112.189
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.114.8 85.255.112.189

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix Checked".

Navigate to and delete the following:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmsws.exe

Search for the following and delete them:

ALCMTR.EXE
ShowWnd.exe

Reboot your computer.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

FOR CONNECTION PROBLEMS :
Click on Start, Control Panel, select the Network and Internet Connections category or double click on Network Connections, depending on which View you are using. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item. Write down the settings in case you should need to change them back. Select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically.
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks. If it does not prompt you to reboot go ahead and reboot manually.

Once the desktop loads please post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log.

Thanks,
tea

NOTE: FYI
My default home page on IE was set to blank before getting infected.
Then once infected it was reset to google.com but not by me.
Now after following your requested steps it has reset to /isapi/redir.dll?prd=ie&pver=6&ar=msnhome
All this while it was locked and not to be able to be changed.

Thank you teacup61,

Hello,

ShowWnd.exe (I DID NOT delete THIS!) Looks like it's in Spybot's log, so that's all right.

Now after following your requested steps it has reset to /isapi/redir.dll?prd=ie&pver=6&ar=msnhome A lot of the tools we use reset the homepage to default, which is usually msn, when they clean an infected computer. Can you change your homepage to what you want now? That's the whole idea there. :)

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp).
Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
Click the "Download" button to the right.
Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_09-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

* Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE: Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
Click the "Delete Cookies" button
Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed): Go to Tools > Options.
Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
Let it scan your system for files to remove.
Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
Press OK to remove them.

Perform an onlinescan with panda: (please use this scanner instead of any other scanner!)
Panda Online http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Post the contents of the Panda scan report in your next reply together with a fresh HijackThis log. Let me know how it's running now, please. :)

Thanka,
tea

Hello Tea,

(Can you change your homepage to what you want now?)

NO I can not, it is grayed out. I am running and have been these softwares * and in the past have set one of them to lock my homepage. Seems that I can no longer find that option in any of them to unlock the homepage. Is there a direct step I can take to alter the url to [about:blank] in the registry or where ever?
* Pop-Up Stopper Professional 1.80.1000
* Spybot - Search and Distroy 1.4
* Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 8.1.0.825
==========================================================

I updated my Java.
I cleaned Cache and Cookies in IE.
I cleaned other Temporary files + Recycle bin.
I performed an onlinescan with panda.

(Let me know how it's running now, please.)

All seems to be running fine as far as preformance speed and redirects in IE but still want to solve the IE homepage URL after you feel comfortable with the report logs I have been posting to you.

Question?
Tea, I have had the below attached problem showing up in my Spybot results since day one of installing Spybot on this 1 year old computer. Is it a problem or just a nuisance? If this is a NEW Topic that has to be handled with a seperate posting I will understand.

Hello,

Everything is all right. You didn't mess anything up. ;)

I'm going to give you a couple of things to do, then I'll address the rest of your issues. :)

For your Homepage try this :

Go to start -> control panel -> Display properties -> Desktop -> Customize Desktop... -> Web tab, then uncheck and delete everything you find in there (except for "My current home page"),

Also remove the checkmark from the the Lock Desktop Items box if it is checked.
Apply.
Apply and Exit Display properties.

Let me know if everything is back to normal now.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/combofix.exe)
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please, along with a new HijackThis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Thanks,
tea

Hello Tea,

(Go to start -> control panel -> Display properties -> Desktop -> Customize Desktop... -> Web tab, then uncheck and delete everything you find in there (except for "My current home page"),)

"My current home page" was they only thing in there and was unchecked, I left it unchecked.

(Also remove the checkmark from the the Lock Desktop Items box if it is checked.)

It was unchecked, I left it that way.

(Let me know if everything is back to normal now.)

No Tea, IE url home page still will not let me change it to blank.

Here you go Tea, sorry for the delay.

Hello,

No problem on the delay....it's the weekend. :)

Try disabling Tea Timer and Windows Defender, try to change your home page then reenable them. Also, this entry O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present could have been set by Tea Timer and will restrict changes.

How is your computer running?

Regards,
tea

Good day Tea,

I found it was Tea Timer, I reset the url homepage to "about:blank" then turned Tea Timer and Windows Defender back on.
Computer seems to running fine I believe you solved it!
=========================================================

Tea, a gentle reminder: This was from my post on 2006-10-11, 10:27

( Question?
Tea, I have had the below attached problem showing up in my Spybot results since day one of installing Spybot on this 1 year old computer. Is it a problem or just a nuisance? If this is a NEW Topic that has to be handled with a seperate posting I will understand.

Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter.AntiVirusOverride: Settings (Registry change, nothing done)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\AntiVirusOverride!=dword:0 )

Is this what we should address next? I await you guidance.

Im Glad we could help
Since the problems are solved Im going to close the topic now, this keeps others with similar problems from posting there logs/question here, they should start a new topic.

If you should need to post another log for the same PC let one of us know via a PM (personal message).
