Hi,

Usual story I'm afraid, someone was let loose on the computer and they didn't notice the virus checking software (Bullguard) hadn't activated.

Have spent months trying to sort it but with only limited success.

Have viewed other logs and clearly a run of Hijackthis is the first step, so herewith a copy of my log - Can anyone help ?
Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1

hi

Please download Qoofix by Rubber Ducky (http://www.malwarebytes.org/Qoofix.zip) to your desktop.

Right click on the Qoofix folder, and choose "Extract All". Extract Qoofix to your C: drive
Close all windows and programs, including internet windows.
Go to C:\Qoofix and open the folder, then double click on Qoofix.exe
Click Begin Removal and wait for the scan to finish
If Qoofix finds an infection, select yes to restart your computer
You will now find a log from this tool, located at C:\Qoofix\Qoofix Logfile.txt Copy and paste the contents of that report into your next reply here.

First download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/) and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.

Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
Under "Reports"
Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
Un-Select "Only if threats were found"

Close AVG Anti-Spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

open hiajckthis. click do a system scan only
checkmark these entries, if still there:
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank

then close all other windows, except hiajckthis
and click fix checked

Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the AVG Anti-Spyware report scan.

Hiya,

One quick question about your instructions - You asked me to checkmark against Spyhunter, do i really need to do this ? This is the one piece of anti-spyware that I actually paid for in the mistaken belief that it would cure all my problems. I didn't checkmark it - Is that okay ? Sorry to be a pain.

I think I have followed all the steps okay, herewith the logs-

hi

spy hunter:
Note on Enigma SpyHunter: Enigma's SpyHunter anti-spyware application was listed on this page primarily because of the company's history of employing aggressive, deceptive advertising (1, 2, 3, 4, 5). The company was also known for exploiting the name "spybot" in its domain names and online advertising. These objectionable business practices were employed primarily from late-2002 to mid-2004.

Sometime during summer of 2004 the company halted the most obnoxious and objectionable aspects of its online advertising. It also unloaded all the "spybot" domains (which were promptly picked up by Paretologic for its XoftSpy anti-spyware application).

While there are still unresolved allegations that SpyHunter transmits the Windows Product ID from users' PCs (1), we can no longer classify this application as "rogue/suspect." Nonetheless, SpyHunter -- at least in its current state -- cannot be recommended because of its mediocre performance as an anti-spyware scanner. Testing indicates that it does not recognize some well-known spyware installations and has difficulty removing critical spyware/adware files even from those it does recognize (1). Given the many excellent competing anti-spyware applications that are available (some for free), users would do better looking elsewhere for trustworthy anti-spyware protection.

Domains: enigmasoftwaregroup.com, spywareremove.com, uninstallxupiter.com

it was listed on http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

go to www.windowsupdate.com, download and install service pack 1. hold off the install of service pack 2 until you're clean
there are still infected files, but until service pack 1 is installed, you're prone to reinfection as an unpatched system contains various security holes

Hi again,

Thanks for the info on SpyHunter, I wish I knew about the spywarewarriorwebsite before I wasted my money !!

On the SP1 situation, I have logged into Microsoft but their system says that the only outstanding update is for SP2. We tried installing this about 6 months ago but never managed to get it to install properly and I never got round to following it up (doh !!).

Hope it's not a bad sign but I couldn't help but notice that Microsoft stopped providing SP1 from 10/10/2006 !!!

We have installed a host of other updates which the Microsoft site lists, herewith a sample (all were successful) -

Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (329834)
Windows XP 823559: Security Update for Microsoft Windows
Windows XP Q329048: Security Update
Windows XP 814078: Security Update (Microsoft Jscript version 5.6, Windows 2000, Windows XP)
Windows XP Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 (KB834707)
Windows XP 810577: Security Update
Windows XP 810833: Security Update (Windows XP)
Windows XP 816093: Security Update Microsoft Virtual Machine (Microsoft VM)
Windows XP 811630: Critical Update (Windows XP)
Windows XP Q329441: Critical Update

Any suggestions ??

Hi again,

I follow the link and click on 'express installation' it then takes me to the express.mspx page, I click on microsoft update and it takes me to the 'keep your computer up to date ' page.

I then click 'express' where it goes and checks for the latest updates for my computer, and the only update that is says I have outstanding is for SP2.

When I click on ‘review your update history’ the only outstanding updates is the SP2 entry. ???

Have been checking with the rest of the folks here and we ‘thought’ we had installed SP1 – anyway we can check ??

Thanks for all your time!

Back again,

Carried on checking things out and via the Custom install button I have managed to get to the SP1 install stuff.

Trying to do the upgrade now - Looks like it is going to be a long job - Gotta fly - already late for work !!

Hi,

Had to leave the install running while I dashed off to work - asked one of my lads to keep an eye on it, and I think it has installed successfully.
If I rightclick My Computer and hit Properties then it shows Service Pack 1, so I guess it all looks good.

hi

open hijackthis, click do a system scan only
checkmark thse entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [xload] "C:\WINDOWS\xload.exe"

next close all windows except hijackthis, and click fix checked
reboot

you already have avg antispyware, we're going to scan with it next:
you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.

Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the AVG Anti-Spyware report scan.

also post a new hjt log

thank you and good luck :)

hi

looks fine :)

are there still problems ??

if not:

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

Managing Windows Millenium System Restore (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial63.html)

or

Windows XP System Restore Guide (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial56.html)

Reenable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.

Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt

Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable

Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable

Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt

Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt

Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt

When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.

If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topict405.html)

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

Understanding and Using Firewalls (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html)

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial43.html)

Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial48.html)

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html)

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

IE/Spyad (https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm) <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Google Toolbar (http://toolbar.google.com/) <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/) <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software (http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html)

also remember to keep your java updated, see this topic for instructions
