View Full Version : Very persistent pop-ups
Rob F (S.Wales)
2006-10-15, 12:30
Hi, I'm a newbie to his forum but have spent 4 days reading up threads and trying many of the suggestions to stop these persistent popups.
I am running windows XP SP2 with Adware, AVG and Spybot. Over the past fewdays since I've had these pop-up issues I have daily checked, updated and run these programmes, including Windows XP updates including windows defender - all do not detect any problems.
I have used IE6 for a long time. The problem that has developed recently is that as soon as I click into IE6 or out of IE6 i get any one of a range of 20ish different pop ups from dating agencies, to partypoker, to finance loans, to disclean software etc.
I downloaded and upgraded to IE7 yesterday which seemed to get rid of the pop-ups, but they are back today, same ones. The latest thing I've done is run SmitfraudFixv2.109 just now which found a wininet.dll infection, so I rerun and removed this in Safe mode. But, the pop-ups are still with me.
The only other unusual thing that may be connnected is that when I was recently running IE6 and also since running IE7 when first loading up I often get an IE Error message with the debug/sen/dont send options .. I select debug when this happens.
Any helpful advice please? as I'm running out of hair to pull out.

Brilliant, thank you; job done, no more pop-ups at last.
I am the main user but not the sole user of our pc here at home. My wife, 17 year old and 14 year old kids use it too.
I suspect mybe one of the kids may have downloaded something. They load loads of music file, and the younger boy plays internet games like Habbo Hotle and RunEscape. Do you think one of these applications might be how the Messenger +3 software go in to our system?
By the way, I still get Windows Exporer error msge window when I click on the IE7 icon, is this a problem, or shall I continue to just hit the debig button every time?
Am very grateful for your help.
Rob
hi
your kids may want that messenger plus back.
the key is to opt out of the sponsor deal when installin it
read the screens very carefully. perhaps a lecture or two about reading end user legal agreements too (for your children). the internet is a dangerous place for kids..
afaik habbo hotel or runescape install no malware, and are safe to use
the IE7 is the beta version, i would 1st try reinstalling it from control panel, add/remove programs
lets run a scan to make sure nothing is hiding there:
Please run the F-Secure Online Scanner (http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols3.shtml#)
Note: This Scanner is for Internet Explorer Only!
Follow the Instruction Here (http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols3.shtml) for installation.
Accept the License Agreement.
Once the ActiveX installs,Click Full System Scan
Once the download completes, the scan will begin automatically.
The scan will take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan completes, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button.
Click the Show Report button and Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
post a new hijackthis log too
i suppose your kids have separate user profiles ?

Hi
Bad news, on turning on the computer today, as soon a OE7 is opened, an American Express Card pop-up appeared. Back to the drawing board.
I loaded and ran F-Secure; all went ok at first. It took nearly an hour and a half to do the scan. It reported no viruses but 5 spyware found. I selected the Dinsinfect opton and when it was cleaning tracking cookie 2/5 it just hung. I waited over 15 mins but nothing was happening.... then I accidently diconnected so got no report either . .. do I need to re-run this software again?
My kids do not have separate user profiles by the way - I guess this would be advisable yes?
Have just taken another hijackthis log in case it gives any more clues... (an await your next advice please)

hi
Download and unzip to one folder:
http://metallica.geekstogo.com/findlop.zip
Inside the folder find findlop.bat
Doubleclick it and it will create the file C:\findlop.txt
Find that file and copy the content into your next post.

hi
1) Please download the Killbox (http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip).
Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run it yet.
2) Then please reboot into Safe Mode by restarting your computer and pressing F8 as your computer is booting up. Then select the Safe Mode option.
3) Once in Safe Mode, please run Killbox.
4) Select "Delete on Reboot".
5) Open the text file with these instructions in it, and copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:
c:\docume~1\owner\applic~1\intern~1\LongShowPop.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\A1DCCCF891B34B2C.job
C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\APPLIC~1\INTERN~1\New Way.exe
put files here in a box.
6) Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
7) Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.
If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here (http://www.eudaemonia.me.uk/downloads/Files/missingfilesetup.exe) to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again..
Let the system reboot.
after reboot, do another hiajckthis scan and post its log
i would like to see a hjt log from another userprofile too, if possible ?

I downloaded killbox, went into safe mode, selected Delete on Reboot, BUT, I could only find the first C:\ docu...... file you listed... couldn't see the other 2 x C:\ files ?
So then pasted the one c:\ docu... file into killbox and deleted it.
Have rerun hijackthis and here is the log:
(Do not have another user profile to hjy log sorry)

Well, sort of got on ok this time, but am not sure......
I am not sure what a notepad window is so I copied your last post in to Wordpad.
Went in to safe mode, ran killbox; opened Wordpad and copied fienames into kilbox entry box. Only first filename copied in. So copied the other two files one by one and appended them to Kilbox entry so all three were there. Checked yes to the Delete on Reboot prompt. It counted down to the deletion execution, but then didn't reboot. So I repeated the exercise 3 times entering and deleting each of the 3 files one at a time this time. System still did not reboot though. So I manually exited and shut down the pc.
Turned the pc back on, truned of real time protection on Windows defender, ran hjt scan, marked the 2 x 04 boxes as asked, fixed them; rebooted.
.... no pop-ups on loading IE7......... am I sorted ? ....
Here is the new hjt log:

hi
looks good, but lets do a scan to see if anything is hiding...
First download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/) and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
Under "Reports"
Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG Anti-Spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.
Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the AVG Anti-Spyware report scan.

its a free program, but the author of it has choosen to fund himself by installin this trojan..
i you want to ( or rather your kids want to ) use it, be careful when reinstalling it. make sure that the box install with sponsor is not ticked
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:
Managing Windows Millenium System Restore (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial63.html)
or
Windows XP System Restore Guide (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial56.html)
Reenable system restore with instructions from tutorial above
Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.
See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:
Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topict405.html)
Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Understanding and Using Firewalls (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial43.html)
Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial48.html)
Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html)
Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety
IE/Spyad (https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm) <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Google Toolbar (http://toolbar.google.com/) <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/) <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software (http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html)
also remember to keep your java updated, see this topic for instructions
