View Full Version : Spybot won't scan 98SE
I just installed version 1.4 on my 98SE box. I don't use that box much since I got a new computer two years ago. I ran older versions of Spybot just fine on the 98SE box but this 1.4 starts to scan and it runs for about 10 seconds and then declares it is finished and has found no spyware. In all the years I have used Spybot, I have never had any version on either my 98SE box or my newer XP Pro box act like this. What is wrong?
Did you already download the latest updates?
Yes. I downloaded the updates during the install and all of them were successful. I immunized IE and there was one odd thing...it wanted to do a snapshot so I let it...but I don't recall having that option in Spybot on my XP box for a long time.
Hmmm...I tried again just now and it is scanning! I rebooted ....maybe that is why....I forget how 98SE has to be rebooted for so many things.
Where is the snapshot now? I looked through the help file and I see nothing on it. How do I update the snapshot when I want to as I can't find it?

Open Spybot>Mode>Advanced>Tools>System Startup.
From the Help Files:
System startup Tools
This tool lists all programs that are started at Windows startup. If those items are in the database coming with Spybot-S&D, it will display some more information about them. It also allows you to disable (and enable) items, as well as delete them, change them or insert new items.
The entries will be displayed in different colours:
Green: legitimate program
Yellow: unknown, unneeded or unambiguous program (e.g. malware programs might use the same file name as legitimate programs)
Red: malicious program
On Windows 9x and ME, the user has full access to this list. On Windows NT/2000/XP, the list will display the global and the current user entries. For some functions like seeing all entries or even changing some, the user may need admin or power user rights.
New feature since version 1.3: entries that have changed since the last snapshot (the first snapshot is created when you started Spybot-S&D for the first time, later on you can create snapshots by right-clicking the list and selecting the corresponding menu item) are displayed in bold letters. This allows you to see changes to the list at once.
