Multiple iexplore.exe

I am getting close to having read and tried everything I can find to rid my pc of starting multiple iexplore.exe processes. These processes keeping adding up until I have 12-20 iexplore.exe processes running at the same time taking up approximately 12-13 MB of memory each. I have run several malware/spyware programs including spysweeper, spyware doctor, spybot search & destroy, a-squared free, and run Norton Internet Security 2006. Nothing is getting rid of whatever is launching all these iexplore.exe instances. I also use Firefox and run IE very, very seldomly if at all. And it doesn't seem to matter that I run most of the time under a limited account in XP. Help!!

thanks for the info. before starting please disable spybots tea timer so it wont interfere with hjt.

scan with HJT, put a checkmark beside the items below, close all windows and click fix checked.

next boot into safe mode. you reach safe mode by tapping the f8 key during a computer reboot. chose the first option safe mode.

see if you can find and delete these two files:
Winload.exe
Winload32.exe
both are located here>>C:\WINDOWS\system32

while you are in safe mode run spybot and spysweeper.

I actually knew that the winload and winload32 exe's were related to a program I was running - PC Tattle Tale. When I uninstalled that program winload and winload32 were already eliminated. I guess I won't be able to use that program unless I tweak some settings - or not at all...

Will need another program to monitor computer use by my kids.

my bad. winload sounded suspicous to me, as in malware. nothing wrong with surveillance software as long as you know its there. so uninstalling it took care of the problem?

Yes - took care of problem. But not sure I want to load that software back on if it is going to take up system resources like that. It was getting to the point where iexplore.exe was gradually building up memory usage to the point of freezing my system. I may reinstall again and see if there is a setting to adjust. But for now going to take a break with it - I spent a lot of non-productive time at getting things back to "normal".

Thanks for your suggestion though - I probably wouldn't have gone that direction for some time down the road...
