My searches have been hijacked and I read the fix from this forum:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=2425
Just did the download and ran FixWareout. I ran it and it asked me to post this here (see below). What do I do next?
:)
Thanks for any help
Bob

I also downloaded and ran the program ATF Cleaner and have rebooted.
Things look a little more normal except some links I click cause Internet Explorer to stop and give me that "send or don't send error report".:)

hi
combofix tackles a different infection ( or a set of infections ), not the one that we're dealing with here ;)
print these instructions, or save as text to a convenient place.
open hijackthis, click do a system scan only
checkmark these entries:
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{F97FD271-D0FA-47BC-AB21-575168DAEF87}: NameServer = 85.255.116.37,85.255.112.85
O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.116.37 85.255.112.85
O17 - HKLM\System\CS2\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.116.37 85.255.112.85
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.116.37 85.255.112.85
then close all other windows except hijackthis, including the one you're reading right now,
and click fix checked
reboot
do another hijackthis scan and post the fresh log
Note:
If You have connection problems or those 017's ~ O17 - HKLM~ 85.255.116.103,85.255.112.198, return =>
Before doing this write down all the settings, Note that not all system/setups even have these settings, while some connection service's will require them.
In the windows control panel: If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be available one some systems

hi
well done, log looks clean now :)
are there any more problems ??
if not:
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:
Managing Windows Millenium System Restore (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial63.html)
or
Windows XP System Restore Guide (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial56.html)
Reenable system restore with instructions from tutorial above
Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.
See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:
Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topict405.html)
Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Understanding and Using Firewalls (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial43.html)
Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial48.html)
Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html)
Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety
IE/Spyad (https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm) <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Google Toolbar (http://toolbar.google.com/) <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/) <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software (http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html)
also remember to keep your java updated, see this topic for instructions

Thank you very much for your help. So far everything looks to be working OK. I am no longer being redirected during searches. I'll continue to watch and post here of any problems.
The other issue was that Internet Explorer would just stop and throw up a message that it could not continue with "send" or "don't send" and error report. I'm sure we're all familiar with this message. It started at the same time as the hijacking. I havn't had this happen again since the removal of the 017 entries.
I'm going to be careful with this computer over the next few days to make sure it's working properly and then do clone or backup of the hard drive.
I'd like to ask another question:
It seems that my second hard drive is nearly always my old boot drive. I install a new drive as the primary master and the old drive as the slave (mainly to copy files). After repeating this process over a number of years, I have a lot of duplicate directories such as "my documents1", "my documents2", "my documents3"...
Do you by any chance know of a way to scan and compare directories to find exact duplicates of files for clean up? I need to regain disk space to make the backups shorter (and easier). I know I have a lot of duplicate data files (not program files). I've asked this question of a number of people and so far no-one knows how to do it. Any thoughts?
hi
i am going to suggest a payware program to do this task
take a look at this link: http://www.macecraft.com/
there are still the older freeware versions of this prgram available too somewhere
As the problem appears to be resolved this topic has been archived.
If you need it re-opened please send a private message (pm) to a forum staff member and provide a link to the thread; this applies only to the original topic starter.
glad we could help :D:
