WinAntiVirusPro2006 popups and windows security center error

Hello, I have been having multiple problems with my computer lately and i've been trying to find a cure for it throughout your forums. I'm unable to run Norton Anti-Virus as the main screen just stops at 'System Status: Refreshing'. I am unable to turn on System Restore and Windows Security Center is showing errors that the service isn't started but when I try to start the service it gives me an error. I have ran SpyBot S&D 1.4, Ad-Aware SE PRO, CCleaner, AVG, VundoFix.exe and HiJackThis to no avail.

Just did some more googling and found how to fix the Norton System Status: Refreshing problem I was having. I just redownloaded and installed Microsoft Windows Script 5.6 and it seems to have done the trick. Now I can run a system scan and hopefully get rid of the rest of the viruses..

Download SDFix (http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe) and save it to your Desktop.
Double click SDFix.exe and choose Install to extract it to its own folder on the Desktop. Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.


Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services or Registry Entries found then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
Finally copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with a new HijackThis log

Hit fix checked and close Hijackthis.

Set windows to show hidden files/folders and extensions
for XP systems Open any folder, Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Apply to confirm. Click OK.


1. Please download Ewido Anti-Malware (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/)
(Now AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5)
Install ewido anti-malware
Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
The program will now open to the main screen.
Update the program and close it


2. Please download Brute Force Uninstaller (http://www.merijn.org/files/bfu.zip) to your desktop.
Right click the BFU folder on your desktop, and choose Extract All
Click "Next"
In the box to choose where to extract the files to,
Click "Browse"
Click on the + sign next to "My Computer"
Click on "Local Disk (C: ) or whatever your primary drive is
Click "Make New Folder"
Type in BFU
Click "Next", and Uncheck the "Show Extracted Files" box and then click "Finish".

3. RIGHT-CLICK HERE (http://metallica.geekstogo.com/alcanshorty.bfu) and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As")
save as text Alcra PLUS Remover.
Save it in the same folder you made earlier (c:\BFU).
If it was saved as alcanshorty.bfu.txt rename to alcanshorty.bfu

Do not do anything with these yet!

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping F8 until a menu appears. Highlight Safe Mode and hit enter.

4. Once in Safe Mode, Open Ewido:
Click on scanner
Scanner tab at the top and then click on Complete System Scan This scan can take quite a while to run, so be prepared.
Ewido will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. Ewido will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (like on the Desktop).
Close ewido anti-malware.

5. Then, please go to Start > My Computer and navigate to the C:\BFU folder.
Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe
Behind the scriptline to execute field click the folder icon http://metallica.geekstogo.com/foldericon.png and select alcanshorty.bfu
Press Execute and let the program do it’s job. (You ought to see a progress bar if you did this correctly.)
Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
Press exit to terminate the BFU program.
Reboot into normal windows and post the contents of Ewido text report that you saved and a new HiJackThis log.

Go start run type in services.msc hit ok
find (be very careful)
"Security Center" double click it to bring up the properties
Under Path to executable it should read
C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs
you will need to change that
Under startup type it should read Aoutomatic
click apply, click start, click OK then exits services


Start Hijackthis and place a check next to these items If there.

Could not change the exutable file path for the Security Center (grayed out) but it seems Symantec has altered the path by adding 'systemroot' multiple times in front of the actual root for the file.

What leads you to believe it was norton that changes the path ?

Run avg antirootkit scan then place a check next to that item and have avg remove it.

After the pc has restarted do another scan with that tool just to ensure that malware item is gone, Is it gone ?

Lets try a registry merge to fix that service

Now double-click on the fixme.reg file you saved and click on the Yes button when it asks if you would like to merge the information. Once you get a successful message delete fixme.reg.
Restart your PC.

Run services.msc again and check

I went in regedit before trying to merge the regfix and changed the Path to executable to C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs and I am now able to see the Security Center contents but I'm still unable to turn off the Windows Firewall. I receive this error when trying to open the Windows Firewall Settings on the bottom left hand side of the Security Center window...

Due to an unidentified problem, Windows cannot display Windows Firewall settings.

I then tried your regfix and rebooted and I'm still having the same error. It's firewall related, that's all I know.

Note: I am running Norton SystemWorks/Internet Security/Anti-Virus 2005 and I did a little research as to what was causing the Security Center to become unable to operate and I found quite a few forum posts pertaining to Norton being the culprate for changing registry keys to disable certain components built into XP for better efficiency running their software.

I hope we can find a fix for this.
