Hello Geoff and welcome to the forum. If you still need help and are not receiving it elsewhere, I understand the item you are referring to is leftovers in the registry from a poor removal by another adware program (possible Ad-aware). I also understand Ad-aware recently updated to remove all of the junk and suggest this being the case, you give the program another try, then scan with Spybot and let me know if that resolves your issues.

I do see a couple of items in the log to mention.

1) Move HJT from the Desktop for safety. I prefer C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe, if you need additional instructions use these: http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm

2) Java is badly outdated, see this information: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\ <<< out of date
If you have the Vundo trojan you will know it, it is a prolific popup maker, usually directing you to a rouge spyware progam called winfixer. Close that security gap quickly.

3) This item: O20 - AppInit_DLLs: wxvault.dll appears to be left from Embassy_Trust_Suite >>> http://www.castlecops.com/o20list-274.html and you appear to no longer be using it. You can use HJT to remove the item if you wish.

Let us know if we can do more...Thanks

Hi

Firstly many thanks for the reply. What a great service you guys offer! I've fixed all three of the suggestions you made above with one issue - the CMD Service I have indeed used Adaware on it. Unfortunately, I have just reinstalled that programme and it hasn't made any difference Spy bot still can't get rid of the CMD Service issue. Rather strangely whilst this was going on, my Sophos copy found a copy of the MSNMK-W virus in my restore files. Using the Sophos instructions I have got rid of that file (and a new full scan has not picked it up again), but still the CMD Service remains.

Is there a way to remove this easily? Would it help if I posted a new Hijack this log?

Many thanks

Geoff

Hi Geoff, follow these instructions:

1) Please download and unzip Ren-cmdservice to your Desktop.
It will only work correctly if the folder is placed on your Desktop and extracted !!.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/ren-cmdservice.zip
http://downloads.subratam.org/Lon/ren-cmdservice.zip

Open the ren-cmdservice folder by doubleclicking it and then doubleclick the
ren-cmdservice.bat file to run the program.
A text will open when it is finished, Post it please.
Then restart the PC run spybot check for and fix any problems found.

2) Let's clean the System Restore files if junk is lurking in them, like this:
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

3) Might not be a bad idea to run a good scan, your option...it's free, follow the instructions.
http://www.virusvault.co.uk/fusionbb/showtopic.php?tid/33/
John McKenna <<< thanks to John for the nice tutorial

4) If you run the scan, post the results and a fresh HJT log. If all is clean, I'll have some great information to help you stay clean.

Thanks...Phil

No Problem, I see the scan picked up some PurityScan junk, and I want to be sure you ran the scan in safe mode as instructed.
Take a look in Add Remove programs for anything like OIN, PurityScan or OuterInfo. Uninstall the same if there. If you see any programs you know do not belong there, uninstall them. If you are unsure about any let me know and I will look.

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

Sounds like you recently removed some junk, so it would be good to clean System Restore files.
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

If we can do more let us know, otherwise safe surfing to you. tashi:) will close the topic in a few days.

Phil

Thanks a lot for this. I definitely ran the scan in Safe mode, though I can't see any other programmes like the ones you mention.

Thanks again for all your help!

Geoff

Im Glad we could help
Since the problems are solved Im going to close the topic now, this keeps others with similar problems from posting there logs/question here, they should start a new topic.

If you should need to post another log for the same PC let one of us know via a PM (personal message).
