Windoworx
2006-10-22, 20:15
I click a link on a pop up that I meant to close. I got rid of most of the nasty stuff but can't get rid of the "protection bar". Any assistance would be appreciated.
Thanks :)

Hi

Download a self-extracting copy of HijackThis from :-
http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/hijackthis_sfx.exe
1. save it to your Desktop.
2. Double-click on the file hijackthis_sfx.exe and it will self-extract into its own folder,
C:\Program Files\HijackThis
3. Go to this folder and run the hijackthis.exe file
4. click Do a system scan and save a logfile
5. Copy & paste the logfile into your next post here...

Hi

I see it in your log, but this program will delete more of it from your computer...

Download: SmitfraudFix.zip from :-

http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip (the file contains both English and French versions)

1. Download to your desktop
2. unzip the zip file to your desktop (they will be extracted to a folder called SmitfraudFix
3. Double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
4. Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files
5. find the C:\rapport.txt file and post the contents in your next post here...

I downloaded file to the desktop.
I double clicked the file and it opened another window with files.
I clicked on smithfraudfix, it opened a comand line but gave no option for #1.
I did a search for C:\rapport.txt but could not find it.

Ran it again, in the command line it says
Fisher process.exe is missing

HI

1. Reboot into >>>safe mode (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406)
2. Double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
3. Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infected files
4. You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection
5. The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file
6. A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt ... Post the contents of the C:\rapport.txt file in your next post here... + a new hijackthis log.

process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

I am now able to uncheck the protection bar but is it still there?
Also my wallpaper changed and MSN.com is now my homepage. Even if I change it, it keeps coming back.

Thanks again in advance.

Lets split this up...

I am now able to uncheck the protection bar but is it still there?
Also my wallpaper changed and MSN.com is now my homepage. Even if I change it, it keeps coming back.

1. I am now able to uncheck the protection bar but is it still there?

What is it you can still see ?

2. Also my wallpaper changed

Can you just change it back ? if not, please explain...

3. MSN.com is now my homepage. Even if I change it, it keeps coming back.

I see you have Spy Sweeper installed... when you change your homepage, do you get a pop-up from Spy Sweeper ?

1. I am now able to uncheck the protection bar but is it still there?

It was in the list when I right clicked in the tool bar. It is now gone.

2. Also my wallpaper changed

Can you just change it back ? if not, please explain...

Changed it, not an issue

3. MSN.com is now my homepage. Even if I change it, it keeps coming back

I change my home page. When I click the home button, norton pops up and tells me the the home page is changing. I scroll down to allow the change but it alway reverts back to MSN. Spy Sweeper does not pop up.

HI

Glad the first 2 are resolved :)

I change my home page. When I click the home button, norton pops up and tells me the the home page is changing. I scroll down to allow the change but it alway reverts back to MSN

It looks like you have a problem with Norton not allowing you to change your homepage...

There must be a setting somewhere in Norton which is locking your homepage... I have no idea where it is ... sorry

Spysweeper would also alert you to any change, if it was set to do so.

Im Glad we could help
Since the problems are solved Im going to close the topic now, this keeps others with similar problems from posting there logs/question here, they should start a new topic.

If you should need to post another log for the same PC let one of us know via a PM (personal message).
