Removing WinAntiVirus 2006 Installer

Hey guys,

I got a popup in IE 7 asking me to install winantivirus 2006. In the middle of downloading I realised my mistake and cancelled. Now whenever I restart the computer, the installer automatically begins downloading the program.

I forgot to mention that I have run VundoFix and it has removed 4 items. I dont think that the popups occur in IE7 anymore, but everytime I turn the computer on, there is a winantivirus installer running that begins downloading the file. I force that program to close and all seems alright. How do I get rid of the installer so it wont run when I turn the computer on? Will running a virus scan with AVG remove the installer?

Welcome to the forum, Winfixer is often harder to get rid of than the trojan that causes it, but if you work with me, we will give it a try. Let's proceed like this.

1) You are running HJT from a TEMP folder and we will have no backups for safety if needed. I prefer you move it here: C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe. To be sure nothing is hiding from us at that time right click the .exe and rename it. Call it say weeds86.exe. The next HJT log will show any hidden Vundo if it is there.

2) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

3) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(first item, if you do not know what it is, remove it)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\UWA6P_0001_N91M1807NetInstaller.exe <<< delete this file/folder(this is the installer and it must go. If it is not where it is supposed to be, search for it until located and delete it. You will continue to have issues until it is located and removed)

6) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post a new HJT log along with any comments you think will help.

Also I couldnt locate "C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\UWA6P_0001_N91M1807NetInstaller.exe" anywhere. I have run a search for the last 1.5hrs and it turned up nothing.

I ran Ad-Aware Pro and SpyBot Search & Destroy before you posted and I think that Spybot must have removed the "NetInstaller.exe" stuff.

OK, thanks for returning your information. Looks like whatever you ran cleaned the Winfixer installer and the HJT log looks clean. How is the computer running now?

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

Just reset the system restore thing.

My computer is running like normal. No pop-ups and it doesn't try to install winantivirus (horray). Start up is a little slow, but it has always been like that. I think I have to many programs running on startup. I can live with that, just as long as my computer stays virus free.

Thanks for that feedback, a few suggestions that might help. I just downloded IE-7 and noticed a slight slowdown with that download, I am hoping the additional security makes it worth it. Cleaning Prefetch with ATF-Cleaner will also slow you a little for a few boots while windows repopulates that folder.
