View Full Version : Pipas.A and...

Hi there. I'm a first-timer here, and I haven't had much experience manually removing any malware from my computer. I have, however, been using Spybot S & D for some time, though I'm suddenly getting a recurring item in my scans: Pipas.A.

I also just started having trouble with popups, both when I open IE and when visiting a web page. When I open IE, I (sometimes) get an add for a travel agency or something similar. While I'm already in the browser and visit a web page, however, I get a "Malicious Software Removal Wizard" or "Windows Virus Scan Wizard" window. I ran Spybot in Safe Mode, and it came up with Pipas.A and Smitfraud, as well as one other that I neglected to take note of. When I returned to normal mode and ran Spybot, the only item was Pipas.A.

Are these problems related? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi strangebrew03 and welcome to Safer Networking Forums :)

You got some infections there...

One or more of the identified infections steal information. If this system is used for online banking or has credit card information on it, all passwords should be changed immediately by using a different computer (not the infected one!) to make the changes. Banking and credit card institutions, if any, should be notified of the possible security breech. I suggest that you read this (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451) article too.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites: http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Finally, please post a fresh HijackThis log, along with the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt

Hi again :)

We'll run FixWareout again. Go to C:\Fixwareout, run the file FixIt.bat The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Finally, please post a fresh HijackThis log, along with the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt

Please download SmitfraudFix (http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip) (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm (http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm)

NOTE: Do not run any other options from SmitfraudFix until I tell you to do so!

Hi again, we'll continue :)

What happened to your AVG Antivirus ?
Have you uninstalled your Norton, I can see parts of it still running ?

You should print these instructions or save these to a text file. Follow these instructions carefully.

Run HijackThis, click Do a system scan only, and check the box next to each of these entries if still present. Close all other windows and press Fix checked. If something isn't there, please continue with the next entry in the list.

O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.115.36 85.255.112.83
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.115.36 85.255.112.83

Now lets check some settings on your system.
(2000/XP) Only
In the windows control panel. If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Click the Networking tab. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be avaiable on some systems
Next Go start run type cmd and hit OK
type
ipconfig /flushdns
then hit enter, type exit hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)

Restart your computer to the safe mode:
Restart your computer
Start tapping the F8 key when the computer restarts.
When the start menu opens, choose Safe mode
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Download F-Secure Blacklight (http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/try_blacklight.html) and save it to your desktop.

Doubleclick blbeta.exe, accept the agreement, click Scan, then click Next

You'll see a list what have been found. A log will appear to your desktop, it is named fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (xxxxxxx will be random numbers).

DON'T choose Rename if something was found!

Post the contents of fsbl.xxxx.log to here (blacklight log from your desktop)

================

When you're ready, post the following logs to here:
- Blacklight log
- a fresh HijackThis log
- contents of C:\Rapport.txt

Hi again, it is looking clean now :)
How is the computer running ?

We'll remove the Symantec leftover...

Disable the leftover service
Start
Run
Type services.msc to the field and press enter.
A window opens, scroll down to Symantec Network Drivers Service (SNDSrvc)
Rightclick it and choose Stop

Reboot the computer. Scan again with HijackThis and let me know if the following line is still present:
O23 - Service: Symantec Network Drivers Service (SNDSrvc) - Symantec Corporation - c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SNDSrvc.exe

You can remove the tools we used during the cleaning process.
Remove the following folder, c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared

You don't seem to a firewall (http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?p=56#56) running, you must install one firewall.
NOTE: If you're using Windows XP firewall, I recommend that you install a better firewall. Windows firewall doesn't really provide enough protection.
Disable Windows firewall after installing a new firewall.

These are good (free) firewalls: Sunbelt-Kerio (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm)
ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/)
Sygate (http://http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3356)
Outpost (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1056)
Now you can clean AVG's Quarantine:
Open AVG Anti-Spyware
Click Infections
Click Quarantine tab
Click Select all
Click Remove finally
Close the program

Then you should update your Java to the latest version (5.0 update 9) Start
Control Panel
Add/Remove Programs
Delete the old Java, Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
Then we'll get the latest version of Java -> LINK (https://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp)
Scroll down to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9
Download & install it

Now you can make your hidden files hidden again.
Go to My Computer
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
Click the View tab.
Checkmark the "Display the contents of system folders"
Under the Hidden files and folders select "Show hidden files and folders"
Check "Hide protected operating system files"
Click Apply and then the OK and close My Computer.

Things are running well, no popups, everything seems clean. Thank you very, very much.

Only thing is, when I tried to remove SNDSsrvc with Hijack This!, it said, "The service you entered is system-critical! It can't be deleted."

Again, thank you for you help. I really appreciate it.

Hi again, nice to hear that :)

Let's remove the symantec leftover...

Open Notepad and copy the following lines from the quotebox to a new document:

@echo off
sc stop SNDSrvc
sc delete SNDSrvc

Save the document to your desktop as Removal.bat and filetype: All Files
Go to your desktop and run the file Removal.bat and allow to run it.

Reboot the computer and run a fresh scan with HijackThis.
The following line should be now gone:

O23 - Service: Symantec Network Drivers Service (SNDSrvc) - Symantec Corporation - c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SNDSrvc.exe

Let me know how it went :bigthumb:
