It could not remove a downloader called purity.scan.da

Hi Matt The Pirate

1. Download this file - combofix.exe (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/combofix.exe)
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

You will now be presented with a screen similar to the one below:

http://img.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/hijackthis/uninstall-man.gif

5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

Send:

- a fresh HijackThis log
- combofix report
- uninstall list

I'm trying to get you a copy of the programs list but when I click on SAVE LIST it does not go to the next step and ask me where I want to save the list. I tried to print screen but I can't seem to get the option to paste into this message box. I also saved print screens to wordpad and tried to upload as attachments but it does not seem to work.

Hmm, how can I get you a copy of my programs list?

Thx,
M the P

Hi

Send that picture to eg. imageshack or some similar service and paste link here, please :)

I'm went to the imageshack.com website but there are tons of programs and I have no clue what to do or how to get my printscreen posted to an address so that I can post it here. I registered for Smilebox but it did not seem to work.

NOTES:
by the way. Just as notes. The TagAsauruS icon downloaded onto my computer when the virus hit last night. I erased the Icon on my desktop but I'm sure that didn't remove any real programs.

Also, when I first boot up I get a DLL message box that says it can't find w02c52d2.dll

O.K., I was able to complete the steps. Only slight problems I had were as follows:

1. elitemediagroup seemed to already be unistalled
2. mirar made me go to their webpage but it seemed to uninstall O.K.
3. on Killbox I did not see an option for "all files" but everything seemed to work O.K. for the killbox steps and it rebooted just fine
4. I do not see this C:Program Files/Common Files/mebo when I go to file manager. The other two I deleted

Here is my Combofix log:

Hi

Download -> http://www.billsway.com/vbspage/ registry search tool and do a search with "C004DEC2-2623-438e-9CA2-C9043AB28508" (without ""). If antivirus warns about the script, let it run.

Send results here, please.

Hi

First backup your registry

Go to start -> run -> regedit -> ok

Go to file -> export. Give it a name and press save.

After that save text below as fix.reg (save it as all files (*.*)) on desktop:

REGEDIT4

I did the first step backing up the registry. I named it "shaba" and pressed save.

The next line I don't understand:

"After that save text below as fix.reg (save it as all files (*.*)) on desktop:"

Where am I supposed to copy the registry text to in order to save it as fix.reg? I'm not sure where to save when you say save on desktop. Please tell me exactly where to go to do this step.

P.S. I am having a serious knee surgery on Friday 11/3 and will be in the hospital for a few days. Please leave this ticket open. I will reply once I am back home and able to.

Thanks!

Hi

Save it in Notepad on desktop and name it fix.reg.

O.K., I'm back from surgery! :)

I saved the fix.reg file into notepad, then I went into windows explorer, double clicked, hit yes and O.K. I think it worked.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/downloads/kws/kavwebscan.html) You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:

o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

+ Extended (If available otherwise Standard)

o Scan Options:

+ Scan Archives
+ Scan Mail Bases

Click OK
Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button
Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.

You have viruses but those are on system restore wich can be easily cleaned according to instructions I give you later.

You're clean!

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

I see no firewall or antivirus on your log. See "Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources" and "Understanding and using firewalls" below for more info how to get those.

Go here (http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp) and download and install JRE 5.0 Update 9. Click the link that says Download JRE 5.0 Update 9. You will then need to select Accept License Agreement and click the Continue button that is beside it. Then click the link that says Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language. Save it to your Desktop. Then go back to your Desktop and double click jre-1_5_0_09-windows-i586-p.exe to start the install. Once you have it installed, click Start>Run, type in appwiz.cpl and hit Enter. From the list, uninstall J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6.

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

Windows XP System Restore Guide (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial56.html)

Reenable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt

Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable

Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable

Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt

Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt

Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt

When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.

If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic405.html)

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

Understanding and Using Firewalls (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial60.html)

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/?showtutorial=48)

Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.

This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/?showtutorial=43)

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html)

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

IE/Spyad (http://www.staff.uiuc.edu/~ehowes/resource.htm) <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Google Toolbar (http://toolbar.google.com/) <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/) <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software (http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html)

Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints (http://www.malwarecomplaints.info/index.php) <--- where you can make difference!

The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.

Shaba,

When I run Ewido, the following downlader is there: Downloader.Agent.bai

I can apply all actions and it seems to work but when I re-run the scan it is there again immediately. Is this a problem?

Hi

Run a scan with gmer.

Right-click this finding ->

Shaba,

Where am I going to try to delete that? It doesn't show up under ROOTKIT tab after the scan. Am I supposed to be going to another tab within gmer?

Hi

Well, gmer log looks now better.

Does ewido still find the same virus?

Matt The Pirate

Yes, I just ran Ewido and here it is again:

Hi

We'll try this next:

Rename HijackThis.exe to HJT.exe

Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop.
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once the scan is complete, Right Click inside the listbox (white box) and click add more files
Copy&Paste the 2 entries below into the top 2 boxes

C:\WINNT\Web\printers\wavew.dll
C:\WINNT\Web\printers\wevaw.*

Click Add Files and Click Close Window
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

How do I rename HijackThis.exe to HJT.exe

where is it?

Shaba
2006-11-09, 21:02
This file must be renamed C:\Program Files\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe -> to this C:\Program Files\HijackThis\HJT.exe

Matt The Pirate
2006-11-09, 21:08
O.K., I went into windows explorer C:\Program Files\HijackThis\ and clicked once on the HiJackThis Icon. Then changed the name from HijackThis to HJT

Will try the Vundo thing now.

Hi

This -> C:\VundoFix Backups\wavew.dll .bad -> Downloader.Agent.bai : Cleaned with backup (quarantined) isn't active infection any more but a backup made by VundoFix.

I'm pretty sure that ewido won't find it again if you re-scan with it :)

Great!

You're clean!

Then just follow instructions given here (http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=51334&postcount=35)

Also, please install Service Pack 2 for both Windows and Internet Explorer.,
