View Full Version : IE pop-up. Maybe Vundo?

I use AVG free by Grisoft. It found a Trojan Generic2.ETW, which I did a google search on and found something very similar on another user's post. In that post, it recomended using a tool VundoFix by Atri. I have run this utility but am still having the pop-up to, ironically, some anti-virus software. I have performed the processes in the "before you post" thread (I think I got everything) and will display these log files below. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

Welcome to the forum, it looks like you got rid of the Vundo infection, but you need to get Java updated, see this information:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2 it may well be that is why you are infected?
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\ <<< out of date.

I can find nothing about this item: C:\WINDOWS\mmputt.exe except that when it shows in a log it is usually with problems, see this:
http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLG,GGLG:2006-16,GGLG:en&q=mmputt%2eexe unless you know what it is, we will remove it, clean some and see what happens. You can also scan the item free here:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html

How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

F3 - REG:win.ini: run=
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {C2B1F233-3B4D-4DCE-8226-71934BFC34D7} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmnll.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mmcrat06] C:\WINDOWS\mmputt.exe

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\mmputt.exe <<< delete that file

Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

I would like to run a good scan to make sure nothing is hiding, follow the directions in this link:
http://www.virusvault.co.uk/fusionbb/showtopic.php?tid/33/
thanks to John McKenna for the excellant tutorial, make sure you delete the bad stuff or a least quarantine it.

Restart the computer and post the AVG Anti-Spyware scan results and a new HJT log. Let me know how the computer is running now.

Thanks

pskelley,
Thanks for your prompt response. I've performed the actions you suggested. So far, so good. I didn't get the popup on my reboot after the safe mode proceedures. Find my two requested logs below. I'll update JAVA after this post.

The HJT log looks clean, I am wondering about the AVG Anti-Spyware - Scan Report
Did you really take no action on these items?
C:\WINDOWS\motorsix.ocx -> Adware.MediaMotor : No action taken.
E:\My Documents\Corel_Painter_8_+_Crack.zip/CorelPainter8TV/Painter8.crack/crack.exe -> Not-A-Virus.VirTool.Win32.AvSpoffer.a : No action taken.
I believe those should have been deleted or at least quarantined. You can run the program again, or delete those manually if you wish.

The balance of those are in the System Restore files, follow these directions to clean out those:
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

Don't forget that Java program, that will get you infected.

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

I noticed that it said no action was taken, too, and thought it was odd. There was actually action taken. When I open up the AVG app., I see it in the quarantine. Must be a bug? Anyhow, I have updated my JAVA RGE and reset my windows system restore files as you've suggested. It's been a couple of days now and I've not had any further issues with IE acting of its own accord, so I think we've gotten everything cleaned out now. Again, thanks a lot. It's really great that there is a resource out in the world like you guys!
