Hello,

I have a problem: i have an unwanted search bar which i cant remove. I thought it had to do something with deskbar, but i'm not sure. In control panel->software i can find searchbar, but when i remove it, i keeps coming back. I have scanned my system with SSD and ad-aware, and cleaned a lot of spyware. It cant seem to find this search bar or deskbar. In my programfiles there is a folder called deskbar; i deleted it once but i came back. Can someone please help me?

Thanks a lot!

Adam

Welcome to the forum, Please follow these directions.

1) Is this your valid startpage? http://www.startpagina.nl/

2) Are you sure this is a safe program? D:\Mediator6\CheckNewUser.exe

3) Bureaublad\HijackThis.exe <<< HJT must have a folder to store logs and backups for safety. Return here and make a folder, call it HJT. Move the HJT.exe and the log that is there into that folder. It would look like this:
C:\Documents and Settings\Anas\Bureaublad\HJT\HijackThis.exe

4) Start > Control Panel > Add Remove programs. Uninstall Deskbar if there. While you are there, uninstall any program you know does not belong there, if you are unsure, let me know and I will look.

5) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

6) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

7) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {A8BD6820-6ED7-423E-9558-2D1486B0FEEA} - (no file)
R3 - URLSearchHook: DeskbarBHO - {A8B28872-3324-4CD2-8AA3-7D555C872D96} - C:\Program Files\Deskbar\deskbar.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {A46750EA-64BE-4DAA-A706-DEA22556D6B2} - \
O2 - BHO: DeskbarBHO - {A8B28872-3324-4CD2-8AA3-7D555C872D96} - C:\Program Files\Deskbar\deskbar.dll

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

8) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Program Files\Deskbar\ <<< delete that folder if it is there

9) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post a new HJT log along with the information I requested above. Let me know if your issue has been corrected.

Thanks

First of all, thank you very much for helping me out here. I really appreciate this.

Answers to your questions:

1) Yes, this is my valid startpage;

2) If you mean mediator, yes. Don't know about the specific file you're mentioning ("CheckNewUser.exe")

3) Done

4) Deskbar was not in the list here, although it was yesterday before i posted here. I removed it then, but the deskbar folder in program files could not be removed.

I also found another program, called "search bar", which i think i the reason for the unwanted search bar i have in my taskbar. When i try to remove it, i get a message telling me to reboot my pc (it doesnt do so, it only tells me to). After the message a new browser window pops up with a website (something like www.vinden.nl...). I had removed it before, but apparently it came back.

5) No need to change, was already unchecked.

6) Done

7) Done

8) Could not delete; i got an error message telling me that deskbar.dll couldnt not be deleted. Did not try to delete the other files manually.

9) Done

By the way, since yesterday when all this trouble started i keep getting a message from the windows safety centre which tells me that my Norton antivirus is installed, but could not give its status. This message is displayed as a red icon with a cross, below on the right in my taskbar, next to the time.

After restarting the search bar which was in my taskbar isnt there anymore, but as i mentioned before, this was also the case after the first time i removed "search bar" in control panel->software, but it came back.

Again, thanks a lot for helping me!

Thanks for returning the information and the feedback from you. Let me say first I see no sign of that toolbar in the HJT log. Please explain about any problems you are having.

Please follow these direction: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

contact http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/ and tell them about these issues, they will probably advise you to download your antivirus software again.

I would like to run a good anti-spyware program. Follow the direction in the following link and make sure you delete or at least quarantine anything located unless you know it is not bad.

thanks to John McKenna for the excellant tutorial.

Recap: Post the uninstall list, the results of the spyware scan, describe any issues you still have, and let me know what Symantec Support had to say.

Thanks

I also installed AVG, but when i tried to scan in safe mode, after about half an hour and about 25% of the scanning, my computer turned black and stayed like that.
I tried it another time, but the same thing happened again.
By the way, of the 25% that AVG scanned, it found about 4 high risk warnings along with a lot of low risk warnings.

I dont have any other issues, and the unwanted search bar i had didnt come back. Thanks for that.

Waiting till further instructions, thanks in advance.

Adam

I see some stuff in your uninstall list I would not have on my computer but it is not "Malware", I do suggest you take a look at that list and get rid of anything programs that you do not know or no longer use.

I dont have any other issues, and the unwanted search bar i had didnt come back. Thanks for that.

If you have no issues, I will suggest you do this: System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

If you have AVG Anti-Spyware installed and it will not run, then I suggest you uninstall it.

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
