hi,

i think i've got some kind of virus. it manifests itself as an icon on the taskbar as a yellow warning triangle with an exclamation mark in it. At regular intervals - every 30 seconds or so a pop-up appears from this icon with various messages such as;
Caution! Your computer may be infected...
Warning: sysetm security alert
Caution: critical possibilty of spyware infection...
Danger: antispyware protection failure...
It also opens up internet explorer windows for http://antispyweb.net/?aff=242

I've also ran hijackthis and produced the attached log.

Hi,

I forgot to mention that in my floundering around to get rid of the virus I
1) I downloaded sp2 whilst with virus
2) Ran avg anti virus, adaware, spybot - unfortunately somewhat randomly, both in safe not and normal o/s
3) I downloaded hijackthis and renamed it as jshjt.exe - as a friend suggested that some viruses etc were smart enough to avoid hijackthis.exe

Subsequent to this, I found a thread on your site - http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=4015 that I think covers my problem.

I had a couple of unsuccessful attempts at running smitfraud (I hadn't extracted it properly) but I have now followed the instructions given.

The rapport.txt log contained;

It does appear that the malware has disappeared- I'm not getting any more pop-ups or web pages opening. I have no idea whether my system is now clean though.

Also worth mentioning that I've now got;

spybot

I don't have a firewall other than the one built in to my linksys wireless router (wireless-g adsl gateway)

have I got enough protection - is there anything else that would serve me well?

Finally - whenever I run spybot it finds 4 DSO exploit objects - always has done for as long as I can remember. A friend suggests this shouldn't be happening?

Hello and welcome to the forum, sorry for the wait, logs are many and volunteers are few. If you still need help and are not receiving it at another forum, please do this.

1) You are running two antivirus programs at the same time and this is not a good thing. They conflict with each other and you will be less safe than if you ran one good program and maintained it properly. Uninstall one, update the one you keep and run a complete system scan, post for me any item that can't be removed, the complete name and pathway.

2) For your benefit, I see Musicmatch Jukebox, iTunes, RealPlayer, Dell\Media Experience and with XP you probably have WMP. Do you really need all of those resource wasters running...your call.

4) Could I have s look at your uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Also worth mentioning that I've now got;
avg anti virus <<< good free program but you can not run NAV at the same time
avg antispyware <<< unless you purchase it, the realtime protection will go away after the trial, links I will post will suggest freeware like SpywareBlaster and Spyware Guard. Microsoft is also offering Windows Defender free.
adaware <<< good freeware, keep it up to date and run in once a month or after a heavy surfing day.
spybot <<< is this up to date? You Mention DSO Exploits and they were glitches from and earlier version of Spybot. Make sure you are running V1.4 and if they still show up, post them so I can see what they are.

5) Your hardware firewall is a very good thing, if you are running no other then make sure the SP2 firewall is activated in the Security Center. I am surprised the Security Center has not been prompting you about running two AV programs?

I will give you this closing information now so you can benefit from it and will ask tashi NOT to close your topic until I get a look at the uninstall list.

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

Hi, thanks for that advice.

I've got shut of Norton Anti Virus, updated AVG and ran a full system scan. It found no threats or viruses.

I've uninstalled Dell Media Experience and will probably also get rid of Musicmatch jukebox.

My Spybot program was indeed out of date - I now have v1.4 - I ran this and it did not find the DSO Exploit.

I've followed the instructions on system restore files so these should now be clean.

I've also removed quite a few programs from start-up as recommended in the link you provided.

With regards to security center - it does not appear in my control panel - I'm guessing this is because I'm logged on under my profile of Jamie and not as Administrator?

Finally, as requested, I've attached my uninstall list.

Thanks for your help on this - my pc is noticably faster and the virus does appear to be no more.

With regards to security center - it does not appear in my control panel - I'm guessing this is because I'm logged on under my profile of Jamie and not as Administrator?
I have only one login so I am not sure, you should have access to the Security Center in SP2.

Good chance to look over the list and get rid of stuff you no long use or need. Make sure you run CheckDisk and Defragg afterward to clean up the drive.
