First off let me start off that I am not a computer whizz, have not been targeted by attacks or viruses much before, and am therefore clueless about common viruses that are annoying people the most lately. So I might be asking some stupid questions, but if anyone is helpful enough, thanks in advance...

The situation: I tried to install a software yesterday. Scanned it with norton and it said it was fine. After running it however, popups started to come from everywhere, some toolbar popped up in my taskbar, files started appearing in C:\ , my desktop wallpaper changed with all my icons highlighted in blue, my computer started lagging bigtime and when rebooting it does not always start up correctly (sometimes I just see a frozen screen of an empty desktop, sometimes it does start everything up) and after booting up I get asked by a file in system 32 to download/run some exe file which I naturally cancel. Right now I'm getting a popup from http://www.amaena.com/pastelblue/?mpt=1162488703593&aid=mgwvfrcg10 telling/spamming me the following:

"Your system is currently sending private information and documents to a remote computer. One of these processes (Win32res.exe) has just sent us the following information:
- \Windows\System32
- \Program Files\Internet Explorer
- \My Documents
- Drive C:\ files
Click here to download official intrusion detection system (IDS software) and SCAN FOR FREE! "
Probably one of the popups generated by the virus, but I'm paranoid right now.

My following course of action was running norton and it did find loads of viruses. Most were deleted but it left some alone. Ran this and spybot a few times more and I'm stuck at 1 file that norton can't delete: dxclib303562752.dll in my system32 map (I can't delete it manually either) and spybot also tells me it can't delete some Command Service registry keys and tracking cookies from Avenue A, Inc. , Mediaplex, Winsoftware.Winantiviruspro2006.

Now I have read some old posts in archives on this forum talking about hijackthis so I downloaded HijackThis 1.99.1. Is someone willing to help me? What do I do now? Thx in advance for reading this confusing post.

Hi Tensai and welcome to Safer Networking Forums :)

You got some infections there...

Create a new folder named HijackThis to your desktop. Move Hijackthis.exe into that folder.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/combofix.exe)
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Thx for wanting to help! I need to go to work now, but when I get back I'll follow your instructions and post it here. Just letting you know I'm still around.

Mr_JAk3, firstly, let me thank you for your welcome.

Before I proceed, I have to tell you that I have not been sitting still yesterday as I was not sure someone would help me. I've read on another place that I should install ewido anti-spyware, run it in safe mode, click 'apply to all' after scan is complete, and save the logfile. It failed me on both times I tried, because everytime I click on 'apply to all' to delete/quarantine the files, it freezes on me (it was quite an amount of items but my computer should be able to handle it) so I could not save a logfile. I assume it must still have performed the actions partly, because I did not see the most critical viruses anymore (hijacker.agent.a, downloader.adload.fu, downloader.adload.nad, trojan.agent.vr - my norton seems to be no good at detecting viruses as it missed out on those completely???) during my second failed attempt.
Now I understand it's hard for you to help me if I receive different advices from multiple other places, so I'll be following your instructions only from now. My only question is whether the status of my computer has changed due to those 2 scans which deleted a few of the viruses, and whether you need me to do something because of it. I'll just await your reply.
In the mean time, I followed your instructions up above and these are the results:

Hi again, we'll continue :)
And yes, please don't follow instructions from multiple sources...

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan. This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files. If this system is used for online banking or has credit card information on it, all passwords should be changed immediately by using a different computer (not the infected one!) to make the changes. Banking and credit card institutions, if any, should be notified of the possible security breech. I suggest that you read this (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451) article too.

You should print these instructions or save these to a text file. Follow these instructions carefully.

Open AVG Anti-Spyware
On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
Click on Change state next to Automatic updates. It should now change to inactive.
Next to Last Update, click on Update now. (You will need an active internet connection to perform this)
Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and uncheck Start with Windows.
Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
AVG Anti-Spyware manual updates (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/).
Download the Full database to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder and install it by double clicking the file. Make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed before installing the update.

Download ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) by Atribune to your desktop.
Do NOT run yet.

Then, make your hidden files visible:
Go to My Computer
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
Click the View tab.
Checkmark the "Display the contents of system folders"
Under the Hidden files and folders select "Show hidden files and folders"
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files"
Click Apply and then the OK and close My Computer.

==================

Open Notepad (NOT WORDPAD!) and copy the following lines from the quote box below into a new document, leaving a blank line at the end. (don't forget to copy and paste the word REGEDIT4) :

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\internet explorer\desktop\components\0]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\internet explorer\desktop\components\1]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer\Run]
"wlnlogon"=-

Make sure there are NO blank lines before REGEDIT4
Make sure there IS one blank line at the end of the file.

Save the document to your desktop as Fix.reg and filetype: All Files
Go to your desktop and double click on the file to run Fix.reg and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.

Run HijackThis, click Do a system scan only, and check the box next to each of these entries if still present. Close all other windows and press Fix checked. If something isn't there, please continue with the next entry in the list.

I'll follow the instructions, but I have a reservation about using the avg anti-spyware-ewido step, as it crashed twice when I clicked on 'apply all actions' (see previous post). Is there a reason you could think of that causes this?

Also, can you tell me how I can have a normal screen during safe mode. When I start avg up in safe mode, I can't see all the options and whether certain boxes are ticked, because it fills up the whole screen (worse, it's bigger, so a part doesn't show), and I can't move or resize it because of it being actually bigger than my screen.

Hi again :)

I think that AVG will be able to run properly in safe mode.

The safe mode doesn't support big resolution so that is why everything looks so big...

Are you sure you can't move the AVG window? Please try to click the gray area of the window (on upper boarder), keep pressing the mouse button and move your mouse. The window should move now.

Please let me know if this ain't working and we'll try something else :bigthumb:

Yep, I tried before for 10 minutes, but I just can't reach the boarders of the software to move the avg window... and i;m also afraid it will crash on me again after I click 'apply all'... but thx for your patience and detailed help, I'll try again. Going to reinstall avg (I use 7.5 btw) to see if that helps.

Mr_Jak, I performed the stuff you needed me to. Note that I re-installed me ewido virus scanner and didn't have the 'full' trial version anymore (thought it was one of the software that would keep note of how many days I had used the software, so that it would still remember that my expiration date was not passed yet... this wasn't one of them, and I didn't have options available for me like 'Resident shield', 'start with windows', 'automatic updates'. no worries I guess, since your instructions told me to turn them off anyway).
Probably unnecessary info, but I'm trying not to miss any details, however trivial. Anyway, these are the logs:

Surprised to see ewido only found one virus (albeit a dangerous one) this time. Had loads of tracking files, cookies hits, etc. Also, no more systemcommand crap or all sorts of dll files that are infected anymore? Still got the highlighted icons on my desktop though.

Btw, is it safe for me to be on the net like this. I mean, last time I scanned my comp with ewido, I didn't come across Backdoor.Ciadoor.13, and had all highly critical viruses deleted (comp froze when I clicked 'apply all', but still finished the activity at least partly)... a day later, without doing anything but being connected to the net, I scan and suddenly there's a new dangerous virus on my comp? Does something on my comp keep downloading new threats, or can someone send this stuff to me without my knowledge? If so, couldn't it be possible that even as I type, or as I wait for your next instructions, my computer has downloaded new viruses again without my knowledge, and that the logs I posted up above aren't up to date anymore?

Getting a bit paranoid here sorry.

Hi again :)

We've got most of the bugs removed so it is looking good :)
AVG Anti-Spy propably was able to clean the findings earlier but it just looked like it was freezed...

I think that this is false positive:
C:\Program Files\mIRC\mirc.exe -> Backdoor.Ciadoor.13 : Cleaned with backup (quarantined).

Please run the F-Secure Online Scanner (http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols3.shtml#)

Note: This Scanner is for Internet Explorer Only!
Follow the Instruction Here (http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols3.shtml) for installation.
Accept the License Agreement.
Once the ActiveX installs,Click Full System Scan
Once the download completes, the scan will begin automatically.
The scan will take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan completes, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button.
Click the Show Report button and Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

So you still have starnge desktop icons...

1. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
2. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Thx for helping. I just scanned my comp with that online scanner, it skipped 2files for some reason and had identified 17 spyware files.
I then proceded to disinfect the files, but after one file it kept sticking with 'disinfecting and sending sample... 2 of 17''.... went out for a bit, came back, and still the same. So it looks like I'll have to start over. Gotta sleep now, will do it tomorrow evening, sorry for the delay. Have a nice sunday!

Ok thanks and same for you too :)

Yes, scan again with F-Secure and post it's log to here when ready :bigthumb:

Well I tried again and I didn't chose to submit samples this time as I was afraid that might've caused it to stop at file 3/17 last time.
It found 10 spyware files this time (as opposed to the 17 last time), and it just kept 'disinfecting' 5/10... nothing freezes, I can do everything on my comp without slowdown, but I simply had to click cancel again because it just seems to stop... It's strange though, the log says it only disinfected 1 file while it DID reach file 5/10, and the previous log also said it only disinfected 1 file while it reached 3/17.. I'll try again, but is there perhaps another way of doing this? Seems like the scanners don't work right for me.

In the mean time, I'll just show you my two logfiles of the two cleans that didn't finish:

Also yes, I still have problems with my icons. They're all highlighted. Like when you click on something with your mouse, it's highlighted in blue. Every icon has this problem on my desktop, even when I create new files/icons/whatever on it. This is the combofix log:

Tell you what, I scanned for the third time, and this time I didn't even have to disinfect, it didn't find any malware on my system. Maybe during the last cleanup, it did clean everything after all although it stalled at file 5 of 10? Hmmm. This is the report. For the combofix log see my previous post.

Btw desktop problem seems solved also, switched wallpaper, switched back, and no more highlighted icons. But can you check the logs anyway, just to be sure. I need to completely trust this computer as I need to use it for some important stuff...

Hi again, it is looking clean now :)
How is the computer running ?

I think that the icons were propably highlighted beacause the colors of you wallpaper. They wouldn't have shown otherwise....

Does your Norton include a firewall ? If not, do this:
______________________

You don't seem to a firewall (http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?p=56#56) running, you must install one firewall.
NOTE: If you're using Windows XP firewall, I recommend that you install a better firewall. Windows firewall doesn't really provide enough protection.
Disable Windows firewall after installing a new firewall.

These are good (free) firewalls: Sunbelt-Kerio (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm)
ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/)
Sygate (http://http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3356)

So how did I get infected in the first place?

Hi again, it is looking clean now :)
How is the computer running ?

I think that the icons were propably highlighted beacause the colors of you wallpaper. They wouldn't have shown otherwise....

Hello again! The computer is running fast now, and I don't have to wait ages for the desktop etc to load when rebooting.
What do you mean with the colors of my wallpaper? I just remember that before it was fine, but when I tried to install some new software I downloaded from a shady bt site... suddenly then popups came, desktop icons got highlighted no matter what color of wallpaper I used... But I think you helped me fix the problem when I followed your instructions, but I had to switch wallpapers for it to be normal again. I switched it back to the same wallpaper right after and all's well. :present:

I still have a few questions, can you pls answer them:

-Is it possible for you to check how I got the virus? To pinpoint which file did it for me? I think it's this software I downloaded from a bt site, but I'm not 100% sure. These files that caused it are probably still on my computer... are they cleansed now (since ewido, etc didn't delete them) and can I run them now? Or should I delete.

-Why did norton not find all those viruses before I ran the file (I always scan everything and auto-protect was on), and why did norton not find the viruses afterwards that ewido and f-secure scanner did? Does this mean I can't trust norton anymore?

-during your instructions when I wanted to be sure a system.exe wasn't in my windows folder, I messed around a bit with my search option and accidently set the 'action' that when I double-click drive icons/files, they won't open but instead a 'find' window will pop up... I did this when I clicked on 'show all extensions' in tools, folder options, file types, advanced... the 'find' command is now set in 'actions', and I want to change it to 'open' again...

Sorry to bother you, but I'm trying to be sure I'm safe to log onto accounts and stuff again... thx a bunch...

Hi again :)

Do you remember that what did you exactly do in Folder options ?

Open Notepad (NOT WORDPAD!) and copy the following lines from the quote box below into a new document, leaving a blank line at the end. (don't forget to copy and paste the Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00) :

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell]
@="(value not set)"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell]
@="none"

Make sure there are NO blank lines before Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
Make sure there IS one blank line at the end of the file.

Save the document to your desktop as Fix.reg and filetype: All Files
Go to your desktop and double click on the file to run Fix.reg and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.

Reboot the computer and try if the drives/folders open normally.

Please let me know :bigthumb:

So you think you have the infected installers on your computer. I really recommend that you delete those and download the proper versions from the authors original homepage. Otherwise you'll get infected again.

Not any antivirus is 100% proof. Best results you get by using multiple scanners, like Norton and AVG Antispyware. But remember to use only 1 active antivirus at the same time.

Got back from work, have to go to help a friend moving out, so I'll try tonight or tomorrow. Thx for your advices, I'll use your firewalls/scanners you posted in your previous post. Just one thing: ewido had mirc.exe as the backdoor virus (remember, you thought it might be a fake) all along? But I installed that software like half a year ago from mirc's official site... could it be that the file was clean first, but when I ran that new downloaded software last week (that caused all this trouble) it infected files at random liek the mirc.exe file? Because I deleted the quarantine I can't start mirc anymore and I'm not sure now whether to install mirc again...

Thankful for all your help man, you're taking out free time to help people out like this.

Hi again :)

Yes the Mirc.exe flagged as a backdoor was a false positive (I tested with my AVG too and it did the same thing). It seems to be fixed in the latest updates...
I completely forgot to restore it before the cleaning, sorry

You could uninstall mirc via control panel -> add/remove programs

The you can download and install the latest version from here (http://www.mirc.com/get.html).

You propably had an outdated version of mirc so updating wont do any harm :)

When you're ready please let me know if the folder/drives are working normally :bigthumb:
