Xp Sp2

Hi,

A friend has asked me to look at his machine, due to pop-ups etc. I have ran all the normal malware tools like spybot, adware, etc..

However, I think there are still some problems remaining and his machine does not have XP SP2 installed yet and I believe that you should ensure your machine is clean before installing SP2. Would it be possible for someone to have a look at the logs attached and give some advice?

Welcome to the forum, nice of you to help a friend and you are very correct, installing SP2 on an infected machine may mean you will have to remove it? You have a nasty here:

You also mention popups and there is a good possibility you have a Vundo infection because of the outdated Java program. See this information:

C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\ <<< badly out of date.
There is also some adware and game loaders I believe should go. My suggestion would be to tell your friend to play the games online at safe sites or purchase them from a reputable store. Downloading "free" online games is asking for trouble.

The hackers are hiding this Vundo trojan, please do this. Return to here: C:\hijack\hijackthis\HijackThis.exe right click the .exe and rename it to say isother.exe or something like that. After a reboot the trojan should be visable if it is there.

We will remove some of the junk now, like this:

How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\shch.exe <<< delete that file

Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post a new HJT log. Let me know where those popups are directing you to. Vundo usually directs to Winfixer (rouge product)

Please download the Suspicious file Packer (http://www.safer-networking.org/files/sfp.zip) from Safer-Networking.Org and unzip it to your desktop.

Run SFP.exe.

Please copy the following line into the Step 1: Paste Text window:

C:\WINDOWS\shch.exe

then click "Continue".

This will create a .cab file on your desktop named requested-files[Date/Time].cab

Thanks for your help. I have done all the steps mentioned including uploading the file before I had deleted it.

The pop-up was a blank HKLM entry for system32. opening the system32 folder when you logged in. I had already removed this when I realised SP2 had not been installed and needed your help. Hope this was not a mistake?

I apologize, I missed the fact that two antivirus programs appear to be running. Symantec and AVG Free.

Beside that which should be corrected, the balance of the HJT log looks fine. I suggest you do this:
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
