Hello and welcome to the forum, sorry for the wait, logs are many and volunteers are few. If you still need help and are not receiving it at another forum, please do this.
Post a new HJT log, describe your issues. Post any error messages you are receiving "word for word". Make sure your NAV is up to date and run a complete system scan, let me know the name and location of any item NAV can not delete or quarantine.
Thanks
sorry for being too brief in my earlier posts... this all started when i opened a file i shouldn't have trusted. immediately got popups and fake security warnings in my windows system tray. i immediately ran NAV and adaware, which found and removed a bunch of stuff, but the system tray spoof was not removed.
i ran spybot and it found more issues, all of which were removed except for Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888. i researched that one, tried the smitfraudfix, it found some files to remove, but spybot said smitfrad was still there. found another post on this forum that asked to post AVG, HJT, and Smitfraudfix logs, so that's what i did with my original posts.
the only visible thing i can see on my machine is the system tray false alerts... the icon is a red circle with an exclamation point. when i open it, it has fake windows logo, headline says "Spyware Detection Alert" and "Quick Scan and Spyware Infection risk assessment", runs an animnation to simulate a spyware scan, and has buttons to "Scan Now" and "More Info." Obviously, I have not clicked the buttons.
In previous HJT scans, I noticed a file called winwly32.dll. In researching that, I found that it was some kind of infection, hence my original subject line for the posting.
One last detail... I use Firefox primarily, but still have to use IE for some business apps.
I re-ran NAV just before posting this. It found three items, two of which were auto deeted and one in which the delete failed. Here are the details:
The file C:\WINDOWS\system32\drvlov.dll is a Security risk threat. [delete failed]
The file C:\Program Files\HJT\backups\backup-20061104-162848-658.dll is infected with the Infostealer virus. [auto deleted]
The file C:\WINDOWS\system32\fsrdwrsu.exe is infected with the Downloader virus. [auto deleted]
Here is my HJT log from a scan just before this post:

First, let me thank you for the feedback, these remote repairs are hard enough without communication. Let's look at what you had to say.
1) This item: Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888 is a false positive that will hopefully be fixed in the next update of Spybot, see this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=8668 You can forget about it.
2) I did not get to see your first Smitfraudfix log where it showed the results of the "search". This helps me discern if the fix is finding everything I think it should, considering it has to be updated almost daily to stay ahead of the hackers. A new version has been released and you can download it here:
http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php Remove anything you have left from the old version, download this version and run the "Search", if it finds nothing, post the scan results for me to view and delete it from your computer. If it does finds something new, then "Clean" it and also post that log for me to view.
3) AVG Anti-Spyware did not find much, but I am wondering why you did not delete this item?
G:\Archive\Umax F Drive\Program Files\Archive\Claudio\Claudio_v3[1].0.zip/Claudio v 3.0/Claudio v 3.0.exe -> Not-A-Virus.VirTool.Win32.AvSpoffer.a : Ignored.
4) Your Java program is out of date, see this information:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
Please remove all old version and download the newest one.
5) See these instructions: http://www.virusvault.co.uk/fusionbb/showtopic.php?tid/33/
Follow the directions in item #3 Deactivate the Resident Shield
- Before proceeding, deactivate the "Resident Shield" as this may prevent changes to the registry.
- To do this, click "Change State" to the right of the Resident Shield option in the main window.
- You will clearly see the status change to Inactive if you have done this correctly.
It will block word aheand we must do.
I see stuff related to Smitfraud, hopefully running the updated fix will remove it, if not we will hit it manually also. See this one:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CTDrive] rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\drvlov.dll,startup
http://www.castlecops.com/s13497-CTDrive.html I am almost sure the 020 Winlogon item is part of it also.
6) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.
7) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
8) How to use the Delete on Reboot tool
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html#delreb
Start Hijackthis
Click on the Config button
Click on the Misc Tools button
Click on the button labeled Delete a file on reboot...
A new window will open asking you to select the file that you would like to delete on reboot. Navigate to the file: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winwly32.dll and click on it once, and then click on the Open button.
You will now be asked if you would like to reboot your computer to delete the file. Click on the Yes button if you would like to reboot now.
9) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CTDrive] rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\drvlov.dll,startup
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE
O20 - Winlogon Notify: winwly32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winwly32.dll
(should have a missing file)
Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
10) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:
(may be gone, don't miss them)
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drvlov.dll <<< delete the file
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winwly32.dll <<< delete the file
11) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Restart the computer and post a new HJT log, any Smitfraudfix logs I need to see and let me know how the computer is running now.
Thanks...Phil
1. forgotten
2. new smitfraudfix log... this looks clean to me, but not positive what to look for.

3. I did not intentionally tell AVG to ignore anything. Should I run it again and try to get it to fix/delete that file?
4. will get my java updated while i wait for guidance on the above.
thanks!

Thanks for the communication:
3. I did not intentionally tell AVG to ignore anything. Should I run it again and try to get it to fix/delete that file?Unless you know what that is, I would delete it manually if possible, if not then use the scan.
Smitfraud looks fine, the creator S!R!, puts a big FOUND! at bad items.
Need this information to see how we did:
Restart the computer and post a new HJT log, and let me know how the computer is running now.
Thanks...Phil
you did not give me a chance to follow all your steps... my last post was just an interim update. =)
3) deleted manually ok
4) updated
5) done -- do i need to toggle it back to active?
6) those are my default settings =)
7-11) done
so the fake system tray item is gone... all seems normal. here is a fresh HJT log... a few (hopefully) last questions for you at the end.

Questions:
1. I now have AVG, Spybot, Adaware, and NAV all running on my machine... what is a reasonable set of protective apps I should be running these days? Last time I went through this a couple years ago, all you needed was Adaware, NAV, and HJT and you were all set. I am open to new tools, but I am a bit anal about keeping installed and running programs to a minimum. I'm enough of a geek to know that things go better when you "Keep It Simple Stupid" even though my machine is pretty beefy. Bottom line, what do you recommend to run on an ongoing basis?
2. I work in software and build my own machines and whatnot... I am not a security or OS expert by any stretch of the imagination, but for not being an engineer, I surprise my programmers from time to time with what I do know about programming, architecture, etc. That said, where would I start if I wanted to learn more about what you guys do and how you analyze the various logs?
Phil, thanks again for your help. I've seen a lot of other threads on this board, and your responses are more detailed and explanatory than most -- very much appreciated (especially by a geek like myself who wants to know "how and why").
Thanks,
Jake

Sorry Jake, must be because I am trying to fix 30 and you are trying to fix one:laugh: Most of the time they are waiting on me.
5) done -- do i need to toggle it back to active?
Jake, I am going to offer links from experts with suggestions to help you with these choices. This program is not free, and I will cover that also, but unless you have a good antispyware program in place now, you may as will activate it and use it until the trial period is over. I will make suggestions for after that down the line.
You HJT log looks ok, I don't see any malware. You do have a lot of stuff running, this link may give you some ideas:
http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/ If you have plenty of resources and no problems with the speed, fine. If not consider turning off the ones you can and start them in All Programs when you need them.
To your questions, I like to differ to the experts, but the rule of thumb is only one Antivirus, Firewall and Anti-Spyware program at a time. More running cause conflictions. AVG Anti-Spyware will go away except as a scanner, neither Ad-aware or Spybot "run" unless you are using them to scan and NAV has to run. The program uses lots of resources but it must run to afford you the protection it says it does.
I will let you read what the experts have to say and if you still have questions at that point ask them. If tasha closes your topic look for my avatar, click it and send the question in a private message. I will do my very best to give you an answer.
If you have an interest in learning about removing malware there are several good free opportunities available. I caution you, not to try to scare you off, but it is hard work. I have been at it for over six years and it seems the hackers are always a few steps ahead, and much better paid...lol.

If I can provide more information, let me know.
Thanks for the nice thoughts, I assure you a have a burning desire to destroy malware and those who spread the junk, and a love of being of service to my fellow man.
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam
AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.
Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

Im Glad we could help
Since the problems are solved Im going to close the topic now, this keeps others with similar problems from posting there logs/question here, they should start a new topic.
If you should need to post another log for the same PC let one of us know via a PM (personal message).
