Infected with Trojans - posted HJT Log

Over the last few days my computer has become infected with trojans. Have tried to remove them but can't - can you help please.

Welcome to the forum, you have some nasty stuff and I suggest you keep the computer offline as much as possible until it is clean. This malware has severely effected your security. Please follow these instructions carefully.
Seems Lonny just cleaned your computer? You need to pay particular attention to the links I post at the end from experts to help you stay clean. There is no good reason for you to continue to get infected like this.

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Download SDFix (http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe) and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and choose Install to extract it to its own folder on the Desktop. Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.

Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services or Registry Entries found then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
Finally copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with a new HijackThis log


(Save the logs until you are finished with the instructions)

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

(some items may be gone, removed by the fix, just don't miss any, be very careful to delete only the file in red)

C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd32.exe <<< delete that file

6) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Make sure you restart the computer, then Finally copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with a new HijackThis log. Let me know how the computer is running now.

Hi - thanks for helping me out.

Following your guidance, unable to download ATF cleaner by Atribune, so went to next one SDFIX - both come up with error messages saying internet explorer unable to download - any other suggestions? Thanks

Other than try to show you what you are up against, I am not sure at this point. These are the tools we have to use. Take a look at the junk!!

This malware or something hidden has caused the issue with the O15 - ProtocolDefaults and we need to get them back where they belong. Sometimes removing them with HJT and doing a reboot does it. ATF-Cleaner is a simple little Desktop cleanup tool I never have issues with downloading. You are probably being blocked by the malware. Continue with the instructions and then post a new log. Do all you can to delete those two files even if you have to do it in safe mode.

We will defeat this junk, just do you best.

Hello,

I managed to downlaod AFT Cleaner on another PC and loaded it on via a disk. All seemed to work ok, but the final stage when it restarted didn't produce a report. I deleted the files you indicated in HJT but they will appear to be there. I delete the 2 c/windows/system 32 files and ran the AFT cleaner.

Was unable to download protocol reg.
Managed to download on to a disk on another PC, but when I ran on here it gave me error msg - Cannot import reset protocal defaults.reg. Error accessing reg.

Other problem - when I start up PC get error message - Windows genuine advantage notification has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

These items are not malware, but rather caused by the malware in lower your security in Internet Explorer. Normally we use HJT to delete them and they return to where they belong on a reboot. It is important that you post a new HJT log when I request one, that is my only eyes into your computer and things can change quickly. We must return those to where they belong and we will try HJT again but let's look at a few other possibilities.

1) The download may have been corrupted, try wiping that out and downloading it again. Please turn off your Antivirus Program on the computer you are using just for the time you are downloading, then right back on. There is a chance the AV is blocking some portion of the fix. Then try it again, if it works, fine, if not it is important that you post the error message word for word exactly as it occurs. I may need to show that to the creator of the fix.

2) In case you have a corrupt or missing file caused by the infection or even the tools, let's run System File Checker like this:
Click Start > Run, type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow. This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things. You may need your XP disc in your CD drive for this.
This will take a while to run and I would appreciate knowing of any files it replaces if that is possible.

3) Your last log is running two instances of SDFix? If we do need it again, then we can download it again, but for now please uninstall (running from Desktop, delete the program) Please note you ran that program from:
C:\Documents and Settings\Terry Chapman\Desktop\SDFix\RunThis.bat
and the directions specified it be run from:

3) Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop. It is so very important all instructions are read and followed exactly. There is a slim possibility this may cause a problem with the other fix? I will remove the stuff from the HJT log.

4) An option to consider would be downloading Internet Explorer 7.0. It downloads over the old program, I am running it and like it a lot, and it will probably restore everything to the default. I suggest you do this at some point anyway, the new version offers some additional security.
I would like the computer to be running well before trying this option unless it becomes a last resort. Thanks.

If not, this may be an issue for Microsoft?

6) There are other tools we can use to look for hidden malware that may be causing the problem, but I would like to rule out the above items before using them.

More problems - tried to do run scannow as your asked. Put XP disk in then it asked for service pk 2 disk. I don't appear to have one so went on line and downloaded it but when I continued with the scan it said wrong disk. I tried to load it directly on to the PC but it came up with an error - probably done more harm that good.

Thanks for the feedback, and yeah...if you have an urge to take off on your own, ask me first. The SP2 was probably downloaded with Windows Criticals at some time.

I am concerned that nothing I asked you to remove from the log is gone. Did you follow the instructions to use HJT at all? Even if the Protocal defaults did not reset, the rest of that junk should be gone from the log? Are you getting a message from Network Associates or any other program indicating it is blocking the cahnges you are trying to make? Please do this:

1) Try those instructions again, expecially the ones using HJT down. Review these instructions:

Once you have selected the items you would like to remove, press the Fix Checked button, designated by the blue box, in Figure 4. HijackThis will then prompt you to confirm if you would like to remove those items. Press Yes or No depending on your choice.

Explain to them what your problem is, that is was caused by malware that has been cleaned from your computer but you are having issues restoring the Protocol Defaults. You would like to know if you can download Internet Explorer 7.0 over the installation of Internet Explorer 6.0 and if that will restore the defaults.
Please let me know what they have to say.

Hi - Thanks for all your help. I went back over all your previous instructions. I ran HJT this in safe mode and removed the files you said. Unfortunately, they still appear to be there. HJT log posted. I checked the settings for HJT and I am deleting them according to the procedure.
I ran Windows updates, and it has downloaded Explorer 7 - still looks like there are no changes though. I didn't know if was going to download, and saw your note about not downloading this until the PC was sorted. I ran AFT cleaner again as requested.

Thanks for the feedback, I am looking at this line in your HJT log:

It points to System Restore running once and is there everytime. You also have a new one:

and it looks like it showed up with Internet Explorer and I have seen as lot of logs with IE7 on them and never saw that item before. I think System Restore is running at each boot and restoring the changes we have made. Have you tweaked anything dealing with System Restore to make it do this?
If you made any changes in the way System Restore works, please post that information for me.


Here is what I would like to try. Turn System Restore off like this:

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Once that log has been posted, then do this:
Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Then create a new HJT log and post that log for me to view.

I was able to download to disk from another PC, but it wouldn't let me open from disk and run - error message:

I appreciate your showing me the error message, please understand we do not want you to run this fix from a disk, it must run from the Desktop of the computer it will be used on. Point your mouse at this link:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fix-Protocol-zones-ranges.reg
and RIGHT click the mouse. Choose to "Save Target As"
Be sure DESKTOP is in the Save in box
Then click on save
Now it will be located on your Desktop.
Double click the Fix-Protocal- icon and answer yes to the prompts.
You will see nothing happen, it will merge with your registry.
then re-immunize with SpyBot.

Get "Fix-Protocol-zones-ranges.reg" on the troubled pcs desktop some how and run it. perhaps download to another pc and put it on a cd, floppy or usb stick, then take it to the troubled pc and put it on the desktop before running.
