working on a friend's toshiba satellite A15 running WinXP SP2
this machine will not allow internet access unless running in safe mode
ran the usual array of spybot, avg, kaspersky, adaware.....
adaware reports "websearch", but after repeated runs, doesn't delete it
spybot reports "huntbar", which also doesn't get deleted

tried several runs/reruns of spyware/viruskillers
restored to oldest restore point (about 6 month ago)
nothing is resolving the prob

hi rayno,

intresting, i may not provide much help. log looks ok as far as malware goes. i assume its a problem with both IE and firefox. when your in normal mode can you run any network tools like ping, ipconfig or tracert.
if you go to start>run and type in cmd, then at the prompt type ping 216.109.112.135 see if you get a result.

also in normal mode and safe mode type in ipconfig for a comparision.
ever have a firewall installed on the computer?

I think they had Norton running, but don't know if it was current
also I'm sure they are behind NAT router
I'll try the ipconfig and other suggestions
to make things worse, my dog chewed through the ac adapter cord last nite so I'm power challenged right now

and tracert
all look ok, no errors, in both safe mode and normal mode
as soon as a browser is involved, in safe mode I can do everything, in normal mode, nothing ( can't even log onto my home router)

try typing this in internet explorer address bar: http://216.109.112.135/

the ipconfig just displays ip address and gateway. ping and tracert actually use your internet connection to get and display a response from a server. a response with ping and tracert means the computer has connectivity

well it looks as if this machine is back in business
power supply came and works
doing some searching around I came across a common thread for this problem - Norton

as soon as I started the uninstall, internet access became available
great security, that Norton; next best thing to not powering the machine on at all

thanks to all that looked at this and made suggestions

Since the problems appear solved Im going to close the topic now, this keeps others with similar problems from posting there logs/question here, they should start a new topic.
