Google Redirect+ Pipas.A problem: Need Some Help

Mid-August 2006, got infection. Went to Symantec and they cured Abwiz.F, but curious redirect with Google. Google said not them and pointed me elsewhere. Including Spybot and Hijackthis. I have XP Home with Ad-Aware & Spybot & CCleaner & Norton Antivirus. Recently had boot problems and had to load files from orig OS disk. Not certain when SP-2 installed.
Followed Tashi "BEFORE you POST" instructions.

I ran HJT earlier this month and started learning about the scan on CastleCops and actually removed two O17 entries with "Nameserver = 85.255.116.118 85.255.112.205". On further research, I found this forum and the advice seemed worth following; that's why I'm posting. I feel that Symantec has really let me down and although I might be able to sort this out myself, I'll save time and agony by getting advice from someone who has a better understanding of these evils. Spybot, of course, removes Pipas.A only to have it come back.

Welcome to the forum, if you still need help and are not receiving it elsewhere, follow these instructions.

1) All of that C:\RECYCLER\NPROTECT\ junk is in Norton's idea of a extra recycle bin? Please clean out the junk, these instructions should help:

2) Spybot picks it up as Pipas.A but we know it as a Wareout infection and it is as Rootkit. It take a special tool to remove it. Follow these directions:

3) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

4) Download FixWareout from one of these sites:

Save it to your Desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

When your system reboots, follow the prompts. Afterwards, HijackThis will launch. Please click Scan,
and check the following items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmsdl.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmsdl.exe

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Post the report from Fixwareout and a new HJT log. Let me know about any problems.

Also, I have Norton AntiVirus: Will adding AVG Anti-Spyware protect better?

I am very grateful for your help. This has plagued me for more than 2 months. Should I worry about stolen passwords/key strokes? I have been holding off doing sensitive stuff on the computer until this malware has been cleared. I think its fixed, but need to double check.

There is little doubt the Ukrainians responsible for this hijacking are looking for information they can turn into $$$. The numbers you removed earlier:

It is never simple, that may or may now be bad. We need to look at a couple of Wareout files, we will check that one at the same time.

The file you are concerned about: C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmsdl.exe
may have been removed by HJT, but we want to be sure. We have one more file that is probably bad that the fix located also.

Make sure all hidden files and folders are still enabled. Then have search companion look for this one:
dmsdl.exe allow time it will take a while. Once search companion indicates it is done searching, and has not found that file, you can be sure it was removed by HJT.

Now have search companion locate this one for you:
nwiz.exe Once you know where it is, then use these free online scanners to find out what it is:

If it is bad, delete it. If it is not bad, do as you wish according to the information you read above.

Now scan this file: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DMGEF.EXE It is probably going to be part of wareout. Once you know it is bad, delete it.

Were you able to clean the Norton recycle bin with no problems? Once the above is done, then do this:

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

I executed your plan.
Very impressed with the three free online scanners.
nwiz.exe was benign.
dmsdl.exe was not on the machine [all hidden files/folders enabled]
dmgef.exe was here and it lit up as bad.
Oddly when I went to delete it, I couldn't find it and then neither could the search companion.
So I ran Fixwareout.exe again and it turned up dmotl.exe
this lit up as bad so I deleted it.
Did sytem restore off>>reboot>> on again.
