• Welcome Guest, to the Spybot Forums! It's 2025, and we just upgraded our forum software.

Today is Safer Internet Day, and with our new forum, you can finally use passkeys to login. That was about time!

Of course, you could ask if a forum is still useful, with so many social media networks out there where you might already have an account, and met a lot of users. You can now use your login from some of those networks to log in here. And by posting here, your question and data is stored on our servers and not automatically shared with a whole social media network.

We'll also start using the forum for small bits of information, announcements and more again.

A couple of days ago I started to get pop ups.

Through some tracking, I seem to have it down to something to do with d4375.upd.dns-look-up.com.

I delete the cookies/temp files and when I open IE (which jut goes to google as my default) i suddenly have a full cookie/temp file folder again.

Attached is a copy of my Hijackthis log.

I currently have/run the following:

AVG Free
Windows Defender
Spybot S&D

Thanks in Advance

James Rogers

Hi jrogers and welcome to Safer Networking Forums :)

You got some infections there, they are causing the popups...

At first you need to disable a few realtime protections. These may interfere with our cleaning process.
We'll enable these when you're clean...

Disable Windows Defender's realtime protection.
  • Open Windows Defender
  • Click on "Tools"
  • Click on "General Settings"
  • Scroll down to "Real-time protection options"
  • Uncheck "Turn on Real-time protection (recommended)"
  • Click "Save"
  • Exit the program.
Please Download NoLop to your desktop from one of the links below...
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
  • First close any other programs you have running as this will require a reboot
  • Double click NoLop.exe to run it
  • Now click the button labelled "Search and Destroy"
<<your computer will now be scanned for infected files>>
  • When scanning is finished you will be prompted to reboot only if infected, Click OK
  • Now click the "REBOOT" Button.
  • A Message should popup from NoLop. If not, double click the program again and it will finish Please Post the contents of C:\NoLop.log along with a fresh HijackThis log
--If you receive an error, "mscomctl.ocx or one of its dependencies are not correctly registered," please download mscomctl.ocx to your system32 folder then rerun the program.--

Still no Joy

Still getting those pop ups. Here are the two logs.

Hi again, we'll continue :)

You seem to have this NetPumper software installed. The free version is bundled with adware but the paid version should be ok.
I assume you're using the free version and we'll remove it. If you're using the paid version, skip the blues steps.

You should print these instructions or save these to a text file. Follow these instructions carefully.

Please download AVG Anti-Spyware to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder.
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
  • Install AVG Anti-Spyware by double clicking the installer.
  • Follow the prompts. Make sure that Launch AVG Anti-Spyware is checked.
  • On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
    • Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
    • Click on Change state next to Automatic updates. It should now change to inactive.
    • Next to Last Update, click on Update now. (You will need an active internet connection to perform this)
    • Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and uncheck Start with Windows.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
AVG Anti-Spyware manual updates.
Download the Full database to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder and install it by double clicking the file. Make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed before installing the update.

  • Click on "General Settings"
  • Scroll down to "Real-time protection options"

Hi again, it is looking clean now :)
The computer is running fine ?

Fix the following leftovers with HijackThis:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =

You don't seem to a firewall running, you must install one firewall.
NOTE: If you're using Windows XP firewall, I recommend that you install a better firewall. Windows firewall doesn't really provide enough protection.
Disable Windows firewall after installing a new firewall.

These are good (free) firewalls:
You can remove the tools we used.

You can enable Windows Defender's realtime protection.
  • Open Windows Defender
  • Click on "Tools"
  • Click on "General Settings"
  • Scroll down to "Real-time protection options"
  • Check "Turn on Real-time protection (recommended)"
  • Click "Save"
  • Exit the program.
Now you can make your hidden files hidden again.
  • Go to My Computer
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
  • Click the View tab.
  • Checkmark the "Display the contents of system folders"
  • Under the Hidden files and folders select "Show hidden files and folders"
  • Check "Hide protected operating system files"
  • Click Apply and then the OK and close My Computer.

=============

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Clear your system restore
This will clear the system restore folders from possible malware that was left behind during the cleaning process.
  • Use ATF Cleaner
Download and install ATF Cleaner. Clean your temporary files & folders with it regularly.
  • Use Ad-Aware
Download and install Ad-Aware. Update it and scan your computer regularly with it.
  • Use AVG Anti-Spyware
Update it and scan your computer regularly with it.
  • Use Spybot S&D
Download and install Spybot S&D. Update it and scan your computer regularly with it.
  • Install SpywareBlaster
SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Install MVPS Hosts file
This prevents your computer from connecting to harmful sites.
  • Use Firefox browser
Firefox is faster, safer and better browser than Internet Explorer.
  • Keep your systen up-to-date
    Visit Windows Update regularly.
  • Keep your antivirus and firewall up-to-date
Scan your computer regularly with your antivirus.
  • Read this article by TonyKlein
So how did I get infected in the first place?
  • Stand Up and Be Counted !
The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.

Stay clean and be safe ;)

Works Perfect

Thanks for all the help. It is working great.

On the Firewall issue, I use a hardware firewall before my Home Net.

I know exactly how I got the infection. Was just being stupid and downloaded and installed something I knew I shouldn't. (NetPumper) I had deleted it even before I started this whole process.

I use Firefox myself, its everyone else that uses IE.

I keep trying to delete those enteries, (H0) but they keep coming back. I am pretty sure they are IE's Live Search Toolbar that is used by a couple of people on this computer.

Once again, thanks for all the help.

James

That's great news :)

Plese try to fix the following entries with HijackThis in safe mode:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =

Ok so you use a hardware firewall... I would still recommend the use of a software firewall too. You propably have no inbound protection at all...

You're welcome :)
