Hi,
I have read many threads about this issue.
However, I cannot find an answer to fix Spybot.
I have cleaned my system of trojans, viruses etc. with on-line scans and everything I can think of.
I have completely cleaned my CPU and the heatsink and fan.
I vacuumed and blew it out with compressed air.
I even took the whole component thing apart and cleaned it. I mean even cleaning a black substance that was plastered between the heatsink and the CPU.
Here's what is happening.
I doubleclick the Spybot icon and the load bar appears for a second or two and then disappears. I never even get the OK button.
Spybot will not run.
I checked my Task manager and I see that the CPU usage goes to 100% and then decreases as Spybot tries to start and then quits.
I am pretty good with computers. I have been a consultant to many people, especially concerning Online Protection.
I cannot understand why I am having so much trouble with Spybot.
It started a few weeks ago and I do remember anything specific event to cause problems.
My computer has the following:
Windows XP Pro Version 2002 SP1
Intel Celeron CPU 1.70 GHz
1 Gig of RAM
Spybot S+D 1.4

I would appreciate any help.
I have never had a problem that required as much time as this one.
I am really scratching my head over this one. :banghead:

… I mean even cleaning a black substance that was plastered between the heatsink and the CPU.
Between the CPU and the heat sink is usually thermal grease, a heat-conductive pad or heat-conductive tape to help transfer heat from the CPU to the heat sink. If you removed that material it should be replaced ASAP.

re: The problem with Spybot not running.

Please see posts #2 and #5 in the following thread:

Thanks very much for replying.
I checked and followed #2 and #5 and neither worked.
Still looking for answers to this difficult problem.

At least 34 people have read this thread and no one has any idea of how to help? :thud:
I could really use some help, PLEASE. :buried:
Spybot is the most important tool in my "ANTI" Weaponry.
I have not been able to get it to run for two months. :banghead:
I cannot even update it.
Is Spybot 1.4 a "piece of junk?" Does it have a bunch of flaws?
It has been so fabulous for the past few years that I wonder.
I find that it picks up "nasties" that other programs do not detect. :bigthumb:
I would appreciate any help.
I think that the "higher ups" at Spybot would be interested in this issue.

OK.
:yahoo: :band:  :beerbeerb: : :present:
I fixed Spybot for now. YAHOO!!!!
Should I tell how I did it?
After the lack of help from this board, I don't know if I should.
In fact, I am not going to tell how I did it. :p:
Over 60 views and then no help?
Heck, I believe in giving back and helping others but when I appeal to the "Top Rung" of Spybot S+D and they don't care?
If anyone who accesses this board encounters the same problem I had with Spybot, leave a message on this thread and I will give my soution.
I am happy to help other USERS of this board who find that Spybot has some serious problems.
Better fix Spybot NOW. I am not going to be the last to appeal for help.

Some members of the top rung (Team Spybot) might be in a different time zone than you,and might be sleeping now.And md usa spybot fan attempted to help above.

(I do not intend this as sarcastic,I am just saying.)

Zenobia's right.
I did get some help and I appreciate it. I also meant no disrespect to the Top Rung of Spybot.
The friendliness of and help on this board forum is excellent.
Everybody helping everybody else.
No harm intended. Just a little frustration expressed.
Thanks Zenobia for the reminder.

Funny, my Spybot has stopped working again. Sheesh!

I am still having great trouble with Spybot.
I got it to update and work briefly and then it stopped working, again. :banghead:
I did get it to clean some weird stuff out of the computer before it stopped working. :fear:
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling both Spybot and Ad Aware because I thought there might be a conflict between the two.
I have tried everything I can think of.
May I respectfully request some assistance?
Thanks,

Were these items found in red after a Spybot scan?Do you feel that your computer might be infected with something?

If you posted a Spybot log here, that might help any Helpers(these people:Helpers, Warriors, Experts and Team Spybot.) reading this have a better idea of what is going on,and determine if you should go to Malware Removal.
Even though you can't open Spybot, you can get to those logs by going to
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Logs.Then,you could find the log with the proper date and Attach or post it here.

Also,it might help if you said what you did to get Spybot working, before it quit again.Or,any other information you can think of.

Thanks Zenobia.
I suspect that there is something interrupting Spybot.
Although I have done a scan for v1/v2 and Vscan with ad aware, they came up wth no detection.

How I got Spybot to work, although briefly:
I cleaned Spybot out of my Computer System.
I hacked all spybot out of the registry and the program files.
I restarted the computer and then downloaded a fresh Spybot 1.4 to the desktop. I installed it, updated it and it worked fine. I did a scan and it picked up about 6 things which I cannot find the log for because it got deleted. I do remember a CWS entry but I cannot remember what it was. It was not the v1/v2 thing.
I shut down the computer late last night and when I restarted it the next day, spybot would not start.

Also tried:
I cleaned Spybot out of my computer and tried installing Spybot 1.3. It does not work.
I cleaned Spybot and Ad Aware out of my computer. I installed Spybot and then installed Ad Aware and it made no difference. Neither Spybot 1.3 nor 1.4 will work.

I have done numerous online scans:
Trend Micro and Symantec to name a few. Nothing found.
Bitdefender would not work because of an ActiveX issue.
I'll try Panda scan next.

As I said, I suspect that something is interrupting Spybot. Whatever it is, it kills both Versions 1.4 and 1.3. However, scans for the particular CWS nasty
that targets Spybot detected nothing.
Glad to provide any info that will help determine what is interrupting Spybot.
Thanks for the response, Zenobia.
Let me know what else I can provide. Maybe I ought to go to Malware?

Yes,it might be a good idea if you got checked out in malware.(unless Tashi or someone comes along and posts otherwise.)

The instructions are here:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
Of course, you'll have to skip the part about scanning with Spybot, since it won't open.

Here is Malware Removal:
http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22

You could also post a link to this thread if you post in malware, just so any Helper that picks up your case would know the background(Spybot not starting, etc.)

I think I figured out what is screwing up Spybot.
Hit at the same time Ctrl, Alt, Delete and bring up Task Manager.
Look under the Processes Tab.
End the Process for Winsock32. End the Process for all examples of Winsock32 running.
My Spybot THEN loaded, updated, and ran great.
COOL. :yahoo: :beerbeerb: :band:  :2thumb:

I still think you ought to consider getting checked in the Malware Removal forum.

You can use HiJack This to eliminate Winsock32.exe entries from your startup list so you you do not have to eliminate from Task Manager all the time.
I will also consult Malware Removal.
Thanks Zenobia.
