View Full Version : Can mywebsearch prevent network access?

Greetings... longtime user of Spybot (and AdAware & HijackThis), first time posting... and it's kind of a doozy (from my perspective, at least). Bear with me please....

My mother-in-law has been having a problem accessing a specific web site, where IE displays the 'page cannot be displayed' page about 95% of the time. She needs to access this site 100% of the time to do her job.

Other web pages work fine, and other PCs don't have this problem. Also, this laptop has this problem on other networks as well. So, it's specific to this machine. It's an XP Home machine, with two users configured on it. And here is where it gets stranger.

When logged into Windows as her ID, IE can hit any other web page, except the one she needs. It's a secure site (https), and when she tries, about 95% of the time she gets 'page cannot be displayed'. But when logged in with her husband's ID, in all sites, IE prompts to dial in to a network. Cancelling puts IE in offline mode, which is useless.

I installed Firefox, and it won't work at all, as if it's not seeing the network.

So, I ran Spybot & AdAware, and neither found anything. I also ran HJT, and found a reference to MyWebSearch (and removed it), but it didn't make a difference.

I had my father-in-law run Panda's ActiveScan, and it found a reference to mywebsearch in the form of a .scr file.

Before I tell him to remove it, I'd like some input form you folks. Can MyWebSearch prevent network access if it's not properly/completely removed? Or is something else going on?

Thanks in advance!

Hello.

We cannot offer removal advice without seeing logs from the PC in question.

"BEFORE you POST" -Preliminary Steps and scanning with SPYBOT-S&D (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)

Once you have posted the HJT log into this topic, a helper will take a look as soon as available and give any further instructions necessary.

Regards. :)

Yeah, I had a feeling you'd say that. :-)

Can you answer this: can an improper/incomplete removal of mywebsearch cause network issues like I described above?

Either way, I'll see if I can't get my father-in-law to post his scan logs here. If not, then we'll just see what happens.

Regardless, thanks for your quick response!

Hello
Theres no obvious malware in your log

Can you answer this: can an improper/incomplete removal of mywebsearch cause network issues like I described above?
No

Also, this laptop has this problem on other networks as well
Id suggest going threw the network settings or windows network wizard
