This is my friend's computer and I'm using my id to post this. Hope you don't mind.

Alright,
Worse has come to worse, this computer hangs like crazy now. Internet connection slowed down, crashes when using softwares like winamp, microsoft office words, multiple notification windows, very slow computer etc. Everything was fine until last week. She said she has downloaded a couple of TV series from internet so that might be the source of this culprit.

Prior to posting this, I actually have to run in safe mode , as hijack this no longer work ( it gives this 'invalid picture' notification popup window ), and the system is very unstable. Please someone help this poor girl. Thank you very much for your helps and efforts.

Hello and welcome to the forum, sorry for the wait, logs are many and volunteers are few. If you still need help and are not receiving it at another forum, please do this.
You are right you have some problems, especially if you can't show me a log in normal mode. I don't know if I can help or not and reinstalling Windows might be needed here, but I will see what I can do if you will follow directions.

1) First the computer is running two antivirus programs at the same time, see this:
You are running two antivirus programs at the same time and this is not a good thing. They conflict with each other and you will be less safe than if you ran one good program and maintained it properly. Uninstall one, update the one you keep and run a complete system scan, post for me any item that can't be removed, the complete name and pathway.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2000031316555206
"Microsoft recommends that you have only one anti-virus program installed on your computer."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/12/03/AR2005120300087.html

2) You are running from services an out of date program: ewido anti-malware. Grisoft purchased this program a while ago and has recently updated it to AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5. If the computer owner does not own this out of date program, it should not be running anyway. Use this information:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ and this tutuorial: http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=3165
Get ewido off the computer (uninstall) and the new program on it and run the program as instructed in the tutorial, perhaps the scan will remove some of the problems and return the computer to where you can use it in normal mode, and the scan results may show us some of what we can not see at this time.

3) The Java progam is outdated and a real security risk, see this information:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\ <<< out of date. Uninstall all old versions in Add Remove programs and download the newest version which is now 10. While you are in Add Remove programs uninstall anything you know should not be there. If you are unsure, let me know and I will look.

4) Since you mentioned the download, Smitfraud often gets on the computer in this way, use these instructions to scan for this infection.
Please download SmitfraudFix (http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip) (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm (http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm)

Recap:
1) Uninstall all but one antivirus program and scan with the one you keep, post the complete name and pathway (location) of anything the AV program can not remove.
2) Uninstall ewido, download..update..scan..remove what is found with AVG Anti-Spyware and post that report.
3) Uninstall old Java programs and install the newest.
4) "Search" for Smitfraud and post the results of that search.
Use "Post Reply", stay in this same topic.

Thanks

Hi thank you for your kind help.

I have re-installed the windows for the computer as there are too many problems occured one by one. Problem solved but I have a few questions about the antivirus softwares.

I can't seem to differentiate between antivirus and anti-spyware program. Are they two different animals or just different names?

i have these currently installed. Please guide me to decide which one has to go.

Norton Antivirus 2003
AVG anti-spyware 7.5 yrial
Microsoft Windows Defender beta
Spybot S&D

All these have real-time protection disabled except Norton. I always thought that having more than one would give you more advantage (during scheduled scan) as when one program might not detect the virus, the other one can.

Thanks in advance

Sorry to hear you had to re-install, but I don't suppose it hurts to get a clean install once in a while. I will post some links from experts, once you have read them, if you still have questions, post them and I will do my best to answer them.

The basic rule is you should run one good antivirus program, one good firewall and one good active spyware program. Running multiples of a program designed to do a job create a situation where they are both trying to do the same jub, and the conflicts that can occur make you less protected.

Of these programs:
Spybot (unless TeaTimer is activated) does not run, and should be used to scan once a week or so, and especially after a heavy surfing session.

Windows Defender is Microsoft's free spyware/malware program. The jury is still out on the effectiveness, but it is free and seems to be doing the job.

AVG anti-spyware 7.5: this used to be ewido, Grisoft purchased it and retooled it. This is a good tool but it is not free. Once the trial is over, unless you purchase the product, it needs to be turned off. There is no benefit to using resources to run it once it does nothing but scan after the trial. The scanner is a good one and updates are free. If you have the harddrive space I would use it as a backup scanner.

Norton Antivirus 2003: Not a big fan of Norton, but many folks are. Norton offers a variety of programs including security centers that do all (av, firewall and spyware) but they are heavy resource users. The one you asked about is just a antivirus program but I wonder at the sense of running 2003 which is four years old, even with updates.

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
