Hi,

Had a phone call off a mate today saying his PC was infected with viruses - what he actually seemed to have was virusblaster/antivirus gold/spyware heal (rogue anti spyware stuff). This was throwing up the various "critical error" balloons from the tray, plus hijacking IE. It also seems to have stopped the Windows Security Centre service.

I ran a SpyBot scan and got rid of a load of rubbish, but the virusblast stuff remains. I have posted a HJT log below...I can see that there are 3 '04' startup entries that need to be removed, and some suspect looking '02' and '03' entries as well ('Gold Codec').

So - in addition to fixing these entries, and removing the programs themselves, can anyone have a look at the HJT log and let me know if anything else needs cleaning up or other actions I will need to take? Machine is running XP SP2 and IE 6.

cheers...

Hello and welcome to the forum, I hope you are not rying to do a three way repair, just the remote repairs of one on one are hard enough.

Let's start with the 018 items in the log, see this:
For your information, all of the 018 items in the log are the result of the Logitech Desktop Messenger which gets installed along with another Logitech program because the EULA agreement is not read. Unless you know what it is and use it, it is a resource waster and can be removed in Add Remove programs, but make sure you uninstall only what I highlite in red, this is optional:
C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\ <<< uninstall only the program in red.
Get rid of that and the log will be easier to work with.

Next, you have cut off the first four lines of the log and the information in there is very important. You really should review this information:

UPDATED WINDOWS - Your first line of defence, links and tips
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=425

"BEFORE you POST" -Preliminary Steps and scanning with SPYBOT-S&D
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288

When the log is in notepad, click Edit then Select All. Copy and Paste everything that is highlited into this topic.

C:\Documents and Settings\(name removed)\My Documents\temp files 20061128\hijackthis\HijackThis.exe
You are running HJT from a Temp folder and it needs to run from a permanent folder so it can save logs and backups for safety. I prefer you move it here: C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe. If you need more instructions use these:
http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial94.html

Since you have a nasty Smitfraud infection to deal with, you may as well use this information:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=4015 When you finish the instructions, post the three logs in this same topic using the "Post Reply" button.
Please use these instructions when you run AVG Anti-Spyware, make sure you delete or at least quarantine what is located.
http://www.virusvault.co.uk/fusionbb/showtopic.php?tid/33/

Spybot-S&D: Be sure to follow the directions to save the scan report but do not post it here unless requested by a helper.

Thanks...pskelley

Hello and thanks for the response.

When I get to his PC next I'll kill the logitech messenger stuff, and re-run the scans and post the new logs for comment/advice re: what needs removing.

You may want to suggest they keep that computer offline until it is cleaned up. This junk will attract more and it looks like they have enough problems now.

Thanks

hi again,

OK - went back to his PC, dumped logitech messenger, ran the AVG scan/clean in safe mode which cleaned up a lot but not everything. Below are:

- AVG scan/clean report (quarantined everything)
- HJT log after AVG scan
- Rapport.txt after AVG scan

There are still some references to Golden/Burster - but I haven't run the SmitFraud fix in repair mode yet, just done a scan. Anything else I should do as well/instead of running smitfraud fix?

thanks in advance
Dave

You need to take the time to read and understand these directions. These tools need to be used in the order of the instructions, the AVG Anti-Spyware scan can effect the ability of the Smitfraudfix to do it's job.

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
After the updates are installed, close AVG Anti-Spyware.
Dont run a scan yetPlease follow these instructions: Delete the Smitfraudfix, a new version 2.126 is available, download it here:
http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< tutorial if it helps. No need to "Search" again.

Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Make sure you restart the computer and post the C:\rapport.txt and a new HJT log.
Do not create the HJT log until after the reboot.

Thanks

Thanks for the further notes- just to clarify though - I did run the scans etc in the suggested order - I just posted the AVG report first. I'll do the suggested action and post logs...

cheers

OK - downloaded the latest smitfraud fix, ran smitfraud fix clean in safe mode and it seems to have done some good. Attached below are the rapport log produced by the clean, and an HJT log produced after a reboot.

Thanks

Thanks Dave, looks like the fix got it all, let's do this.

1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

2) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

3) AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5: Deactivate the Resident Shield
- Before proceeding, deactivate the "Resident Shield" as this may prevent changes to the registry.
- To do this, click "Change State" to the right of the Resident Shield option in the main window.
- You will clearly see the status change to Inactive if you have done this correctly.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MyWebSearch Email Plugin] C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\1.bin\mwsoemon.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MyWebSearch Email Plugin] C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\1.bin\mwsoemon.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [License Manager] "C:\Program Files\License_Manager\license_manager.exe " /silent
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://edits.mywebsearch.com/toolbar...rch.jhtml?p=ZS

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\PROGRAM FILES~1\MYWEBSEARCH\ <<< delete that folder

C:\Program Files\License_Manager\ <<< delete that folder

6) -Launch AVG AS and click the Infections button.
-Click the Quarantine tab
-Choose: Select All
-Click: Remove finally
-A window pops asking "Are you sure you want to remove the selected files...??"
-Select: Yes

7) Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

8) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and see how it's running. Since you have to be there, I am giving it all to you now. They should be clean at that point. If you have any questions, please post them.

Thanks...Phil

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
