View Full Version : Browsers hijacked

A friend of mine has had his browser seriously hijacked (BT Yahoo browser, plus latest Firefox (downloaded and installed today) and IE are ALL affected) and it keeps going to porn sites.

He's on XP Home, SP2. Norton anti-virus is up to date as are windows updates. Spybot S&D was installed last night and some things were deleted, but we followed the instructions in the thread mentioned below anyway.

I read post #2 on this thread - http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288 - and will go through in order what was done.

Results of online virus scan -

Apologies for the xxxxxxxx stuff but his name is there and I'd rather not post it.

Part 2 says reboot PC into safe mode - this was done.

Part 3 was also done. Spybot S&D removed everything it found and the last test was clean.

If I add the Hijackthis log to this post it is too big so I will followup in a sec. It's not looking good to me so far, but I'm no expert, the worst I had was coolwebsearch many moons ago.

Hi Dayus and welcome to Safer Networking Forums :)

You got infections there...

Download HijackThis to your desktop from here (http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/HijackThis.exe)

Create a new folder named HijackThis to your desktop and move HijackThis.exe into that folder.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites: http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Finally, please post a fresh HijackThis log, along with the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt

==============

Download F-Secure Blacklight (http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/try_blacklight.html) and save it to your desktop.

Doubleclick blbeta.exe, accept the agreement, click Scan, then click Next

You'll see a list what have been found. A log will appear to your desktop, it is named fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (xxxxxxx will be random numbers).

DON'T choose Rename if something was found!

Post the contents of fsbl.xxxx.log to here (blacklight log from your desktop)

============

Please download SmitfraudFix (http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip) (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm (http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm)

NOTE: Do not run any other options from SmitfraudFix until I tell you to do so!

Hi, looks better :)

How is the computer running ?

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner)

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT

Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Extended (if available otherwise Standard)

Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases

Click OK
Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer

This will program will start and scan your system.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button:
Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Hi, looks better :)

How is the computer running ?

Hi, my friend said last night that he was surprised at how mush faster it was running.
He is away now but will run the Kapersky scan on Sunday and I will post the results on here.

Thank you.
