my laptop and desktop have gotten very slow. I need some guidance as to what i can do to bring them back to their youth. i didn't think my laptop was that bad until last week when i was trying to d/l pictures from my uncle's sony digital camera. when i connected its usb cable to the latptop, the laptop would display the Add hardware dialogue and go to the last step of it saying "Failed to Install hardware" (not an exact quote). After looking online, i found someone else had the same problem, and he had to go through hijackthis posts to clean it up. So here i am ...

if this isn't the most appropriate place, then please advise me as to where i should post. below is the hijackthis log from my laptop. any advise is appreciated greatly

thank you

i didn't really give any symptoms in the previous message, so here are a few.

- bootup is slos
- loggin in is slow (We have the login screen of windows XP, where you can select the icon that the user is, it's not like Novell log on, just a simple log on for each user.)
- when i go "File" , "Edit" , "View", etc. its respective bacground gets dark, as it should to indicate it is selected. however, when i move from that butotn to the next, the previous stays white, instead of going back to gray, or whatever colour it was. but then if i go over it again and off, it'll go to gray. and this happens on multiple programs, and not every single time, just sometimes.
- switching between programs is slow, like alt+tab , and so on.

i'll try to post more symptoms as they reoccur.

thanks in advance again

Welcome to the forum, I see a bunch of junk I think should not be on your computer like this:
http://www.superadblocker.com/definition/sbcle028/ and a out of date Java program:
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\ <<< out of date, see this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
Please uninstall all old Java programs and download the newest update.

The problem is this junk does not look like anything that will cause the issues you are having. You may also have issues that are not related to malware, and there could be hidden malware at play that we will have to look for.
There are also many, many reasons for a slow computer besides malware and I will post some ideas a little later. Let's clean up what I see and go from there.
I also want to mention that it is vip that error message are word for word, that is how google can find them.

Move HJT from the Desktop for safety. I prefer C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe, if you need additional instructions use these: http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

Start > Control Panel > Add Remove programs and uninstall anything you know should not be there like sidestep, MyWaySearch, etc. If you are unsure, let me know and I will look.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(the first five are Dell redirects to keep you looking at adds. Click them to see where they take you and if you do not need them, check and remove them)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and give me some feedback.

Thanks...Phil

i was trying to d/l pictures from my uncle's sony digital camera. when i connected its usb cable to the latptop, the laptop would display the Add hardware dialogue and go to the last step of it saying "Failed to Install hardware" (not an exact quote).
This is probably not a malware problem, I would naviagate to the website of his camera and look around for the error you did not give me.

Im Glad we could help
Since the problems are solved Im going to close the topic now, this keeps others with similar problems from posting there logs/question here, they should start a new topic.
If you should need to post another log for the same PC let one of us know via a PM (personal message).
