Winlogin.exe & Continuous Rebooting

Hi all,

I am going through a weird virus that appears to have landed on my pc.

Here is what happened:

I was online and a message appeared that said that a virus had been detected on my computer called winlogin.exe. This was discovered by AVG, my antivirus program.

Well it said that it would have to quarantine the file and said that the PC needed to reboot. I clicked ok, and that where the problem started. So now the computer keeps restarting on its own. It never goes to the desktop/start page...

So I clicked F8 and started using Safe Mode with Networking. Otherwise I wouldnt be able to get to the internet. I read some posts here and a lot of people seem to suggest HijackThis. So I ran it and it produced the following report:

Hello and welcome to the forum, Update Your Windows XP.
You are currently using an unpatched version of Windows XP.
Before attempting to remove malware, it is CRITICAL that you update to Service Pack 1a.
Get SP1a here : http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp1/default.mspx
You should also get SP2, but NOT NOW, rather only after your machine is clean.
After updating your Windows to SP1a, post a new HijackThis log please, using the Post Reply button.

How to get out of safe mode from the system configuration utility
If you use the system configuration utility to get into safe mMode you'll need to use it to get back out too.
Choose Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information.
Choose Tools > System Configuration Utility.
On the General tab, Select Normal Startup -- Load Device Drivers and Software.
Click OK then restart Windows by clicking Yes in the System Settings Change dialog box.

Thanks Tessa?, once we have you clean of malware it is important that you update to ServicePack#2. Microsoft no longer supports SP#1 and you must be able to get critical security updates as they are released. Be sure I give you that information before we finish.

The first thing we must look at is the fact you are showing two version of HJT on your Desktop:

What I would like you to do is delete one (if you have two) and move the other one here: C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe. If you need more instructions for doing that, use these:

This is the item you reported that AVG located: winlogin.exe. Are you sure that spelling is correct? Would you run a scan with your AVG antivirus program and if it locates anything, copy and paste that information to this topic. I need to know the location also.

Please follow these instructions:
Thanks to andymanchesta and anyone else who helped with the fix.

1) Download SDFix (http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe) and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and choose Install to extract it to its own folder on the Desktop. Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.

Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services or Registry Entries found then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
Finally copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with a new HijackThis log


(save that SDFix log and the HJT log until all instructions are complete)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

4) Please follow the instruction in this link, this IS NOT the same as your antivirus program, but a new program that hunts malware.

5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart your computer and post the log from SDFix, the scan results from AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 and a new HJT log. Let me know how the computer is running.
