Got Winhound. Can you help?
Think I've done all the prelims...but can't figure out how to send logfile.

Hi, Welcome to the forum

First Make a new folder, example C:\AntiSpyWare
Download/save hijackthis to that new folder
http://www.merijn.org/files/HijackThis.exe

Double click HijackThis.exe, Hit None of the above, just start the program.
Hit Scan When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button. Press that, save the log somewhere, and please show us its contents.
Most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.

Thanks for reply. I can't get the log to post here...says too many characters. I've got the log ready to go...and have run all the preliminaries...bit Defender and Spybot. Please tell me what to do.
Thanks

Thanks.
Is your desktop hijacked ? (says winhound) or are your antispyware programs reporting it, if so which ?

bucksboy

My desktop is hijacked...and things sure are moving slower than usual. Neither Spybot nor Ad-aware nor Spywareguard show it. It doesn't show on Norton, either...except in the threat log. When I run Norton, it doesn't show a thing.

Download smitRem.exe (http://noahdfear.geekstogo.com/click%20counter/click.php?id=1) and save the file to your desktop. (By noahdfear.)
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.
Place a shortcut to Computer Associates eTrust AV Web Scanner: on your desktop.
http://www3.ca.com/virusinfo/virusscan.aspx

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
install then from within the program check for updates BUT dont scan yet
ewido security suite: http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK.
We will fix this in a moment.
From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"), Now close the program.
Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates: Ad-Aware SE Setup (http://rstones12.geekstogo.com/adawareSE_setup.htm)
Don't run it yet!
Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Spybot check for and fix any problems found.
Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:

Click on scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido
Restart back to a normal windows session
Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.
Use the free Computer Associates eTrust AV Web Scanner
select all drives, scan, Try to cure/repair, if it cannot choose delete! If it cannot delete tell us the files names and locations.
Post a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist

Just skip that and visit the site when instructed

Believe the hijacked destop is fixed. Thanks! However...when I start up, I bet it took three minutes for the destop to load. The wheels just kept spinning. Any reason for this?
New logs to follow.

Thanks and let me know about the slowdown, please.

Hey, Lonnie

Winhound appears to be gone...but I time it this AM and it took over five minutes to boot up and sign on to IE (cable modem). It's never taken this long before... What's up?
Thanks

Hi

Not sure if this will help

what do you mean sign i with IE ? comcast hiompage perhaps ?

have hijackthis fix those two (file missing) items
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

And in addremove programs uninstall comcast's extra tools, they are not needed, I use comcast myself and have uninstalled it.
Have you reset the modem lately ?
Turn the pc off, unplug the modem and firewall if you have one. wait 60 seconds plug the modem and firewall back in wait about two minutes and turn the pc back on

Update suns java manualy
Sun Java V1.5.0_06 is Available: http://java.com/en/index.jsp
Afterwards Turn off it's auto-updater,(Its buggy) , in control panel java >
update tab uncheck its option to update automatically.
After you install the newer version its important to uninstall the old versions, via addremove programs.

Lonny,
Panda turned up nothing...but still taking forever to boot up. Have not yet fixed the files throgh Hikackthis.
Thanks.

Can't figure out how to add two missing files with Hijackthis. Am wondering if some of the programs I've installed to get rid of winhound are running in the background and causing the 6 min. startup time...Ewido, for instance?

LonnyRJones
2005-12-17, 07:33
Hi

No Ewido wouldnt couse that, do this please
Download and run blacklite
F-Secure Blacklight: http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/try.shtml
click > scan then > next, next again then exit
there will be a new txt near blacklite. post it please.

bucksboy
2005-12-17, 14:58
Lonny,
I've run backlite. It shows nothing hidden...and I know you must find this frustrating, but I can't get the process log to copy and paste.
I believe the commands you gave me were scan-next-next-exit. All I'm able to do is scan-next-exit. I can view the process long, but can't copy.

also note: I've found I'm unable to change my desktop color. It changed to white and won't let me change it back...even after turn-off or re-start. Maybe my desktop is still hijacked?

LonnyRJones
2005-12-17, 15:03
Launch Notepad (not wordpad), and copy and paste the contents of the code box below into a new text file, with nor\tepad not wordpad
Save it as file name: "fixme.reg" (not including the quotes). Save as file type: All files (*.*) and save it on your Desktop.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\General]
"WallpaperFileTime"=-
"WallpaperLocalFileTime"=-
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"ForceActiveDesktopOn"=-
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"Wallpaper"=-
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ActiveDesktop]
"NoHTMLWallPaper"=-
"NoAddingComponents"=-
"NoChangingWallpaper"=-
"NoComponents"=-
"NoDeletingComponets"=-
"NoEditingComponents"=-

Now double-click on the fixme.reg file you saved and click on the Yes button when it asks if you would like to merge the information. Once you get a successful message delete fixme.reg.

Log off then back on again to windows

Maybe a rootkillrevieler report will shows something
Download unzip then scan with RootkitRevealer
http://www.sysinternals.com/utilities/rootkitrevealer.html
when its done go file > save, attach or post the log back here in your next reply
Not to worry, normal there are a few of item shown.
It's an intensive scan, I suggest you disconnect from the internet and leave the PC alone until its finished.
Since the log might be very large, Please edit out items in
C:\RECYCLER\NPROTECT if there.
c:\windows\temps
c:\documents and settings\your name\---- temporary internet files.
And C:\System Volume Information, before posting

bucksboy
2005-12-17, 16:34
Lonny

Log turned out to be very small

HKLM\SOFTWARE\WinHound.com\WinHound\WinHound\License* 12/10/2005 8:24 PM 0 bytes Key name contains embedded nulls (*)
D: 0 bytes Error mounting volume

What next? By the way...would it matter if I'd done much of the scanning that we've done with systems restore in the 'off' position?
Thanks

Its shouldnt matter about system restore, usualy when all is cleaned we suggest turning it off reboot then back on again, that clears or flushs all the old restore points.

That leftover winhound item cant(shouldnt) be cousing the problems you describe, I can describe how to manualy delete it but only if your already familur and confident with regedit, otherwise i think we should move onto something else.

I'm not familiar. Maybe we should move on...but I'll try it if you think that's best.

Is your desktop back to normal now ?

Check in device manager for exclimation marks, if any are there write down the error numbers for us
start > settings > control panel > system > hardware > device manager

any other odd problems ? mention them even if they seam unrelated.

Im not seeing much of anything yet.
Turn off Spyware Doctor and ewidos resident type protections from inside each program, you can keep them for scanning though, you have Spywaregaurd that should be suficiant.
rightclick on this link and choose save as, save it to your desktop
double click and answer yes to the prompts then restart your PC
http://downloads.subratam.org/Lon/fix-desktop.reg

Check you display properties if you are still unable to change the wall paper describe itr better or post a screenshot for us please.

Removed spyware doctor and ewido. Fix-desktop did nothing. Have a screenshot of desktop, but don't know how to send...sorry. Can you please tell me?

Hi
Just to check, you did do this already correct ?
In windows Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Not of the desktop but of the area in display properties you cannot change, It might be to large to attach here, so attach it at this forum
start a new topic then near the bottom is the option to attach
http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/forum/index.php?board=1.0

Lonny

Won't let me into properties. I used this string of commands:

control panel>display?desktop>customize desktop>web>

Also no 'security info' present

LonnyRJones
2005-12-17, 21:55
Control panel > display > desktop can you choose a new background there ?

You cannot right click on the desktop to get to display properties ?

bucksboy
2005-12-17, 22:32
Cannot change display at control panel. It clicks like it wants to change...but background stays white.

Right clicking on the desktop itself gives me no properties...only five of six title lines...like protocol and type and connection and address and size and created and modified.

Ok lets go through running smitrem.bat again, if when you double click it a text opens let me know, no need to run it while in safe mode this time.

bucksboy
2005-12-18, 00:03
Sorry, but I don't understand exactly what you want me to do. Just run Smitrem and send you the log?
Are you sure we ran it in safemode last time?

LonnyRJones
2005-12-18, 10:02
Hi

I suspect it wasnt ran correctly the first time. Otherwise the rightclick on desktop > properties would be there.
delete the file c:\smitfiles.txt, find the smitrem folder open it and run the file called RunThis.bat
when its finished post the c:\smitfiles.txt

bucksboy

Here it is. Not much to it. I thouight it'd be longer.

Ok

Now are display properties available via rightclick on desktop > properties and can you change items on the display > desktop page ?

bucksboy
2005-12-18, 20:50
Can't change the display. I can change it and it will go to the new selection during startup, but just before the icons appear the screen turns first blue and then white.

A right-click on desktop only gets me these six lines in the property box:
protocol, type, connection, address, size, created, modified.

Hi bucksboy
Im not sure what to suggest and we do not seam to be making any progress, perhaps taking the pc to a local shop and let them work on it would be best.

Good luck
