Hello,

My computer was infected with malware. The bug would put an icon on system tray. The icon in the form of a yellow triangle with an exclamation
mark, would create warning messages of the computer being infected with
the following threats, psw.x-vir, network-i.virus@fp, spyware.cyberlog-x,
trojan-spy.win32@mx. In addition, internet explorer would open automatically
at sites selling virus or spyware protection programs. My home page in internet explorer was also changed and new tools bars were installed. I did
a search on the web using the above malware names and found that this bug
is called Zlob and it is an advertising trojan. I tried using Spybot SD to remove it, but it didn't work. Now this may have happened because I couldn't update Spybot as my internet connection slowed significantly during the infection. I found from forums that the trojan could be removed using a program called SmitFraudFix. I used it and the infection symptoms stopped.
However, the people at the forum adviced running two other programs,
AVG (EWIDO) anti-spyware and Panda active scan, to removed residual vulnerabilities. Since running SmitFraudFix, I have been able to update Spybot
and run scans and I have noticed with my virus scanner and Spybot an increase in attacks on my computer. I don't know anything about the above two programs and would like to know from an independent source if they
are safe and won't cause additional vulnerabilities. Also I would like to know if actually additional problems remained after the infection. I tried posting the log from my last scan, but it had over 200000 characters. Please advice.
Thank you for your help.

Hi pippin and welcome to Safer Networking Forums :)

Please post a HijackThis log to here: Click here (http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/HijackThis.exe) to download HijackThis.exe
Save HijackThis.exe to your desktop.
Create a new folder named HijackThis to your desktop. Move Hijackthis.exe into that folder.
Run HijackThis.exe
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Ok lets see if SmitFraudFix did it's job :)

Please remove any previous version of SmitFraudFix.

Please download SmitfraudFix (http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe) (by S!Ri)

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm (http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm)

NOTE: Do not run any other options from SmitfraudFix until I tell you to do so!

Hello,

In your last post, you said that before running ATF cleaner I should run HijackThis in a system scan only and check each of these entries if still
present. When you say each of these entries, do you mean
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k

You continue to say that if something isn't there, to please continue with the next entry on the list. Do you mean the HijackThis list after scan and when you say continue, do you mean checking them and pressing Fix Checked? Please advice. Thanks.

Hi :)

I meant that you should check this with HijackThis and then hit "Fix checked":

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k

If that is not in the list you can just move to the next step.

Sorry for the inconvenience :bigthumb:

I ran HijackThis where I found an instance of the 04 entry you indicated to fix. I fixed that and then ran ATF cleaner in safe mode. Finally I ran AVG anti-spyware
in safe mode, but had the following error message:
Something bad happened in the application. Error diagnostic file saved to
'c:\program files\grisoft\avg anti-spyware 7.5\avgas.err'
I ran AVG again and this time the scan was able to finish. The report is below.

Hi, it is looking clean now :)

How are things running ? any issues ?

pippin

No issues at all. I was wondering what was threat from the Zlob trojan. It
caused the annoying warnings and would take my browser unwillingly to
those, maybe bogus, spyware/virus removal websites. My question is does it
do other malicious things like steal info, corrupt data....? Do you know?
Is the purpose of that bug just to annoy? Thanks.

Ok good :)

Passwords and possible bank details may have been compromised so changing is a good idea. It depends on the version of this pest.

Now you can clean AVG's Quarantine:
Open AVG Anti-Spyware
Click Infections
Click Quarantine tab
Click Select all
Click Remove finally
Close the program
You can remove the tools we used.

Then you should update your Java to the latest version (6.0) Start
Control Panel
Add/Remove Programs
Delete the old Java, J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.0 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp).
Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications."
Click the "Download" button to the right.
Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement."
The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Install it
