A routine scan by Spybot S&D showed that my computer was infected with smitfraud-C.Toolbar888. However, when I tried to followed the instructions for the removal of smitfraud I couldn't get ProcessExplorer to display DLLs in the lower pane. The results of following the very good instructions given in "Before you Post" are:-

The reason for the excepionally large number of files is that I use Norton GoBack and most of them are GoBack history files. I couldn't copy the list of folders scanned - it just wouldn't highlight. However all the viruses were in Norton's quarantine area. There doesn't seem to be any facility for 'cleaning out' the quarantine area.

To get the computer to start in Safe Mode I had to disable GoBack, which destroys all the GoBack history. I am so afraid of a crash, or losing data, that I use GoBack, Ghost full and incremental backup to external disks, and Iomega Rev to backup data files as they change. Perhaps it's overkill but I have used all of them occasionally.

When using S&D in the Safe Mode I destroyed 'smitfraud' using the normal destroy facility (rather than the extended instructions). Whether I should have done this I am not sure, but and it doesn't seem to have reappeared.

Your help would be very much appreciated.

Hi Dealbarta and sorry for the long delay.

Let's see if there are any parts of Smitfraud left...

Please download SmitfraudFix (http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe) (by S!Ri)

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

NOTE: Do not run any other options from SmitfraudFix until I tell you to do so!

Hi Mr_JAk3

Since posting my original report I have increased the protection on my system. I now run SpywareBlaster, Windows Defender and Spywareguard in addition to Spybot S&D, and have installed JRE 6 – I think I was running 2 which I have uninstalled. I have returned to Norton Personal Firewall after using MicroSoft’s firewall for a few months when the Norton licence ran out. Also, now that IE7 has introduced tabbed browsing I use it as my main browser instead of Firefox.

Since making these changes I have had no reports of malware on my system.

Here are the reports you asked for. Incidentally I found it impossible to download SmitFraudFix via IE (I tried several different sites) and in the end downloaded it via Firefox. Because of the length of the report I have split it after SmitFraudFix.

Hi again :)

I can only see a few leftovers in your hijackThis log.

So you don't have a subscription to Norton anymore ? In that case you won't get any new updates and you won't be protected. If so you must uninstall Norton and install a new antivirus and firewall. (First download the installers and do the uninstallation and installation offline). I recommend that you get a better firewall than the windows one. It doesn't give you enough protection.

IF you remove Norton:

You must install one antivirus.

These are good (free) antiviruses: AVG (http://free.grisoft.com)
Antivir (http://www.free-av.com)
Avast (http://www.avast.com)

You must install one firewall.
NOTE: If you're using Windows XP firewall, I recommend that you install a better firewall. Windows firewall doesn't really provide enough protection. Disable Windows firewall after installing a new firewall.

These are good (free) firewalls: Sunbelt-Kerio (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm)
ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/)
Sygate (http://http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3356)
Outpost (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1056)

You should print these instructions or save these to a text file. Follow these instructions carefully.

Run HijackThis, click Do a system scan only, and check the box next to each of these entries if still present. Close all other windows and press Fix checked. If something isn't there, please continue with the next entry in the list.
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k

Allow the changes if you get a warning from one of your security programs.

Restart the computer.

Then I recommend that you run a one more onlinescanner:

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner)

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT

Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Extended (if available otherwise Standard)

Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases

Click OK
Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer

This will program will start and scan your system.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button:
Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.

When you're ready, please post the following logs to here:

I think I may not have been entirely clear in my last message about the firewall I am using. What I meant to say was that after using Microsoft's firewall for a few months I returned to Norton and renewed my subscription. I also run Norton Anti-Virus and the subscription is up to date. I think Smitfraud may have got in whilst I was using Microsoft's firewall.
I tried what you advised in your last message and had no problems in removing the entries with Hijack This. However, I couldn't get Kaspersky Online Scanner to run after installing the ActiveX component. I contacted Kaspersky Labs about the problem and they suggested changing some of the IE7 settings but still no luck. I suspect it may be the Norton firewall which is blocking the scan but I am not experienced enough to modify the settings.
Any further suggestions would be most welcome.
Kind Regards

Hope there are not too many problems as I am still getting a ‘clean bill of health’ from Spybot S&D.

Kind regards - and a Happy New Year, if it's not too late!:)

Hi again, it is looking clean now :)
The computer is running fine ?

Now you can clean AVG's Quarantine:
Open AVG Anti-Spyware
Click Infections
Click Quarantine tab
Click Select all
Click Remove finally
Close the program
You can remove the tools we used.

=============

Now that you seem to be clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Clear your system restore (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/mcgill1.mspx)
This will clear the system restore folders from possible malware that was left behind during the cleaning process.

Use ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1)
Download and install ATF Cleaner. Clean your temporary files & folders with it regularly.

Use Ad-Aware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/?showtutorial=48)
Download and install Ad-Aware. Update it and scan your computer regularly with it.

Use AVG Anti-Spyware (http://www.ewido.net/en/)
Update it and scan your computer regularly with it.

Use Spybot S&D (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/?showtutorial=43)
Download and install Spybot S&D. Update it and scan your computer regularly with it.

Install SpywareBlaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html)
SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.

Install MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm)
This prevents your computer from connecting to harmful sites.

Use Firefox browser (http://www.mozilla.org)
Firefox is faster, safer and better browser than Internet Explorer.

Keep your systen up-to-date (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com)
Visit Windows Update regularly.

Keep your antivirus and firewall up-to-date
Scan your computer regularly with your antivirus.

Read this article by TonyKlein (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=279)
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Stand Up and Be Counted ! (http://www.malwarecomplaints.info/index.php)
The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.

Stay clean and be safe ;)
